Got an e-mail from Adele Hartley, the organiser of the outstanding Dead By Dawn horror film festival in Edinburgh. For a number of months now she has been campaigning the release of May on the big screen in the UK.

However, got an e-mail this morning which states, among other things:

The really sad news is that I've just heard that the film won't be back on a big screen, at least not as part of a release campaign.

The film is available for rental from today, and the retail date is August 11th (as a Virgin Exclusive). I'm sure the irony of it being a 'virgin' release has completely escaped the powers that be, and personally I think a fantastic opportunity has been missed by relegating this movie to a small screen, but financial decisions rarely have anything to do with the quality of the film, unfortuantely.

So, I hope you enjoyed seeing it on the big screen where it belongs.

So, disappointingly, it won't be hitting the big screen. But wait a minute - it's OUT? For rental?

Indeed, blockbuster.co.uk does have its release date as 14/07/03.

Chuff me, man. That sucks, does this mean you can only buy it in Virgin when it comes out to buy? I hate Virgin's shops, they seem very depressive compared to the mighty HMV. But guess I'm gonna have to build up some courage to actually go and buy it, what a damn shame too.

I agree. This is strange and sad. This is the best film I've seen this year, and that includes city of god and whale rider. Bizarre.

Oh well, I would strongly recommend any uk readers out there that were not at dead by dawn should go rent it.

Yup, and that doesn't bode well for the quality of the disc.

After all, the Cheech & Chong films were Virgin exclusives, and they were originally £19.99 with no extras whatsoever. I hope their May release isn't like this (but secretly fear it will be).

Still, we can all buy the US one at www.playusa.com for £15.99 with a commentary.
