I did a forum search and realized that there had never been a thread devoted to one of the greatest and most original bands of the last twenty years. So, what does everyone think of the band?

i listen to punk and i still think they are a great band even though they are nothing like punk.

I think they're a pretty good band that has some of the best guitar solos out there.

They're bloated, countryfied Southern rock. I can't stand their whole "Dixie" obsession, either.

Haha, yeah, I don't know what Trent Reznor was thinking when he made the album "Whistling Dixie down the Missisippi." I wasn't the biggest fan of his whole "River Dance" phase either. ;)
But seriously Nine Inch Nails is one of the best & most creative bands out there. I have all of their albums (except the dozens of remix albums ofcourse) and I think "The Downwards Spiral" & "The Fragile" are absolute masterpieces. I know Trent Reznor gets alot of flack for his lyrics, which admittedly can get very one note at times, but hey, the man knows how to make great, creative, and interesting music. By the way, I also own the "All that Could've Been" DVD and their concerts look simply amazing, I am so there, whenever they go on tour again.
It's too bad we're probably years away from seeing a new album, seeing as how the Fragile took 5 years to make. But I sincerely believe that since NIN has yet to make a bad album and have managed to make a few great ones, it will be worth the wait.

Trent is amazingly talented, but I've never been able to become a real fan.

Yes, thats why I love NIN, they are nothing like the "music" you listen too everyday, NIN are original.

I like NIN a lot, and they are second to Bathory as my favorite "one man band"
Trent is a smart musician and writes some good songs. But I wouldn't call him a musical genius.
If I had to choose between Trent Reznor and Al Jourgensen, I'd take Al. Because he did more for the industrial genre, and wrote better music. IMO.

I'm not quit sure why you think NIN is original. There really isn't anything original about them. Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, and The Downward Spiral are all great but I wasn't crazy about The Fragile.

Just "one" Album, that you dident think was "all that good". NIN are the most original band to come out in a while. Despite if one or two of their Albums are shit. You cant change that they are original.

Yeah, what's your point. I like all their stuff but I didn't think The Fragile was that great.
Perhaps NIN is original if you're 15 but I've been listening to industrial music for a long time. I like NIN but they are not original.

I just recently got into them, I think they're awesome, I actually like the Fragile the best out of their CDs, but I think that's probably because it's the first one I've heard, while most NIN fans have been following them for a while and so Fragile would seem unoriginal after hearing their other stuff first.
I don't really like Pretty Hate Machine (too 80s sounding) but I like Broken (even though it's short) and Downward Spiral, as well as Fragile. I also like a lot of their remixes.
So anyway, I think they are great, one of my favorite bands right now in fact, (although my favorite bands do change frequently).
By the way, does anyone else think the NIN cover of Get Down, Make Love would make a great music video? ("Uhhhhh.......uhhhhh...uhhhh....:p )

Well sure industrial was around before NIN but they made it mainstream (for them at least, it still isn't very popular). Also, I have noticed that most of the newer industrial metal bands quote NIN as one of their major influences, so I guess they must have made some sort of impact.
And also, I chose to start a thread about NIN because most people know who the band is. If I chose to start a thread about Frontline Assembly, Pigface, Apoptygma, ect. most people wouldn't respond just because they are not fans or have never heard any of their music.

Ministry was more involved in bringing industrial into the mainstream than NIN was. Without the popularity Ministry had, NIN wouldn't have been half as big.
Of course NIN were influences on a lot of bands. That still doesn't make them original, just a good band. Nirvana was huge influence on a lot of bands. Were they original?

I agree with you, Ministry did have alot bigger impact then NIN.
Nine Inch Nails is still one of my favorite bands though, I wonder when the next CD will be.

I've been a NIN fan since 1991, and they've remained one of my favourite bands throughout the years! I saw them live in Manchester in 1994 and I have to say it was one of the most intense gig experiences I've ever had (and I've a seen lot of bands in my time :) )
While not completely original, Trent always manages to do something different within the confines of the genre, and in my opinion each album just gets better and better with age!
I know Ministry were around before NIN (and in fact Trent was involved with Al Jourgenson in his side projects The Revolting Cocks and 1000 Homo DJs, trivia fans!) but NIN really made industrial accessible to the general public, and hopefully turned a lot of people onto the genre.
I'm looking forward to Trent's next offering (which hopefully will turn up before the turn of the decade! ;) ) and particularly to seeing them live again. :)

I first got into NIN in the late 80's. They used to play the Baltimore area about once every two months. It was amazing watching them grow because every time they returned they would be a lot bigger. They first played at a small club called the Calvert Street Cafe. There was about 30 people there. They then went on to open for Skinny Puppy and Peter Murhpy. Their next headlining show was at the Brokerage and Meat Beat Manifesto opened for them. There was about 500 people there. Than they went on to open for The Jesus and Mary Chain. After that they played at Hammerjacks which held a couple thousand people. All of these shows were from the Pretty Hate Machine album.
Than on the Downward Spiral tour they played the Baltimore Arena. There was probably 10,000+ people there.

CLOSER must be recognized as a masterpiece of song. It's truly amazing to listen to. If you want the full aspect of the song, I suggest that you listen to the song with the lights out and completely in the dark. Truly brilliant stuff. It builds and builds and then just explodes into a fury of instrumentals that end on a soft note.

Pretty much all of NIN's stuff is like that, Trent Reznor is one of the greatest musical geniuses of our time.
