View Full Version : An itching question on Day of the Dead.

Why didn't the girl and the two pilots just take off to the island with the helicopter at the very beginning? They went back to the hideout knowing that the captain-guy is an asshole and will probably kill them after they serve their duties. Sorry if the answer is obviuos, but this question has been itching me ever since.

Yeah, it's been troubling me too. The scientists wanted to tame the zombies or whatever but I dunno why the pilots and the soldiers stuck around

Because in the beginning they all had a sense of responsibility, they all at one point wanted to help try to save the human race. The point where we join them in the film is the point when everyone has had enough, and is starting to give up.

I believe they didn't do it right away out of decency, it is only the point when we join that they begin to realize it is hopeless.

I cant wait for this film to finally come out on DVD next month! Woo hoooo!

Anyhows yeah, even though those military guys were assholes 99% of the time, but they were human, and Im sure that theyd rather stay with what little was left of humanity, even if they were assholes...of course they reached a point where they just had to leave, but they stuck it out as much as they did because of wanting to feel they were around other human beings and not totally alone with all those zombies out there...

This will be worth your money! This movie to me anyways, is the best in the series. Its got soooo many zombies, and a good story. Have fun if youve never seen this! Your gonna love it.

I haven't seen 'Day of the Dead' for a while.... but

I seem to remember that, also, at the start of the movie, the previous military leader -- who was much more fair to the civilians --- had just died.

Therefore, the military had not unreasonably taken over, and there would have been no reason to leave. The civilians had no idea that things could/would get as bad as they did.

Also, with limited gas for the helicopter, I'm sure that its use was pretty heavily monitored.

And, who's to say that the Island (without any weapons or supplies) was any safer /ect than the secure military base?

In my opinion, the ending was pretty disappointing for me. Both Night and Dawn ended on a very cynical note, but then at the end of the trilogy the people get away. And how did they get away? It shows them get attacked right before they fly away, and then just cuts to the beach scene with no explanation of escaping the last scene.

Yes, Nekretaal is correct.

The Military base was being run by the "Major" (forget his last name). He was described as an asshole, but no-where near the difficulty that they had working for Captain Rhodes.

The major died off-screen before we met him, but his overweight corpse is tested upon by Dr. Logan when he does the tricks with the brain to show how to make the arms/legs move of a zombie, and sadly, his head had already been taken apart too.

I think that's best described as this:

Producer: George, we're out of funds for the budget. Let's end this piece of shit, NOW.

George Romero: Damn.

This is sort of related to Day Of The Dead, but over in my thread (http://www.joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57420) for upcoming DVDs you should buy, someone posted that Fulci's masterpiece (so I've heard) Zombie (Zombi 2 for all you people overseas) will be released in August to coincide with Day Of The Dead's release. Now, I haven't heard much about this movie, other than the stuff on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com) and Arrow, but is this movie as good as people say it is, and is this DVD worth the wait (excuse my sorry ass for not knowing much about zombie movies, as the only ones I have really are Resident Evil, NOTLD:ME and Re-Animator:ME).

I liked Day of the Dead, and it is worth buying if it really is the three-dics extrvaganza people say it will be, but Dawn and Night are so much better. The commentary and satire just isn't as biting, and it's far too literal. But if your looking for just good zombie fun and goofy (bordering on disgusting) gore, then yeah, it's worth it.

Hey, I have a question....I seem to rememember a newspaper at the begining of this film with the headline "The Dead Walk!" Isn't that the same headline, perhaps the same paper, in Resident Evil?

Yeah, at the last part where Alice was naked, there's a newspaper that says the same thing right when she walks out the hostpital.

Yeah that's something that bothers me. Originally Romero was gonna make Resident Evil but capcom didn't like his script and then they took Anderson's which rips off Romero's films.

It's interesting to note that Romero had originally directed a commercial for Capcom a while back for Resident Evil 2 (the game, not the movie) in Japan.

Isn't weird? I mean they'll let him direct a commercial for RE2 but won't even let him make the movie. P.S. I mean RE2 the game. Not the upcoming film.

I always thought that the last attack (there was a zombie inside the helicopter!) didn't happen -- It was just an el cheapo 'boo' scare -- similar to the el cheapo "she was hallucinating" scare at the beginning of the movie when hands reached through the wall. After all, how would a Zombie get inside the helicopter anyways? (It isn't like zombies have keys to helicopters)

I also don't think that Resident Evil ripped off Romero that much. 'Resident Evil' is more of a haunted house movie than a zombie movie, as the plot concerns the entry and exit of the Hive -- and not how ordinary humans react to the coming of the end of the world. The zombies were just kind of there... Besides, Romero did not direct the first zombie movie, and he will not direct the last. Every movie with zombies in it does not automatically rip off Romero.

Did anyone else find it odd that there were so many zombie's outside the military compund even though they were supposed to be in a secluded area? I know its just a movie, but id still love to know how they all got there.

I guess it`s because theres hardly any living people left anywhere, and the zombies know theres people in the fenced-in area.

Nekretaal didn't rip off that much eh? Ummm let's see: Both films had a dead walk newpaper, both took place underground, both had a scene where a guy gets pulled back into a room full of zombies, both had slow moving zombies. And I didn't say that all zombie films rip off romero. I'm just saying this one did. I mean like Paul could actually think of a dead walk newspaper himself. If you don't believe me then just listen to the commentary. Paul even admits in a few scenes he ripped off day.

Ok, I see your point. Two films, both about zombies and an underground military bunker...

Here's my point.

"Day of the Dead" was about the end of humanity and the breakdown of culture in a post apocalyptic society. Day of the dead featured zombies as a constant source of Chaos.

"Resident Evil" was a haunted house movie. Our characters were stuck in a house which was "haunted," by technology, the Red Queen, rather than undead spirits. Owing more to '13 Ghosts' than 'Day of the Dead,' each room had it's different peculiar situation; and once you escaped one room, you were safe from its dangers, but you had to face the dangers of the new room. Most of the rooms did not have zombies, and once a character was out of the zombie room, they were safe from the zombies.

Resident evil lifted a lot of things from other movies, (includind the elevator kill from 'The lift' and the laser kill from cube), but it did not steal its structure from Day of the Dead.

As for minor details, such as the headline that appears on the newspaper after the movie is, in effect, over... that can be seen as an homage... (That newspaper was important to neither film).

You also state a good point.
