Recently there's been some successful big independent horror films coming out lately. With the success of films like house of 1000 corspes and 28 days later could this be the rise of independent horror? Also with future films like cabin fever coming out this could be a big rise. What do you fellow schmoes think? Can this be a rise in independent horror? Tell me your thoughts.

Oh definitely, I agree totally.

To me it's because horror is huge right now, and the studios are starting to realize the dollar signs that can come from successfully marketing independent films (ie Blair Witch, 28 Days Later)

The irony of the situation I suppose is that most of these filmmakers make their films outside the studios to avoid creative interference... and now the studios suddenly love these guys once their film starts to get buzz... Do you think the studios even realize this?

Plus it's a win win situation... the studios get to make money on a film that they spent ZERO dollars to get made, and the filmmaker finally gets to break into the mainstream and fulfill their dreams.

It's an interesting and terribly ironic situation, but I personally am psyched about the raise of independent horror, I think that it's a good thing for everybody, especially us.

For the record though, House of 1000 Corpses was not an independent film at all, it was funded completely by a major studio. It only ended up at Lions Gate after it was dropped twice.

The independent features are better in terms of originality and scares than the mainstream stuff, in my humble opinion. They don't have to cater to the masses, ergo have a more unified vision because they aren't "committeed" together. I'll watch the mainstream movies too, but the independent films almost always touch a more raw chord of horror in me.

I have always been a fan of Independant Horror. we've had great movies formed out of such, a great example is Halloween, WOW! For the budget and 20 days they had to film it, it's wonderful. Isn't The Evil Dead aslo Indy? Anyhow, I am a fan on this type of horror!

It's nice to see some people agree. Yeah independent horror is the best:Night of the living dead, Dawn of the dead, Evil Dead, Phantasm, Dog Soldiers, etc;. Oh and my mistake on house of 1000 corspes. Well it is low budget though. Right???

I think House of 1000 corpses still can be called independent. Yes Universal was behind Rob Zombie making a horror film, but when they saw how cruel and un-hollywood-like they dropped it.

PS. How many GREAT horror films aren't independent?
