Glad you enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to seeing the unabridged version at some point. The cinematography, sets and scenery in this movie were very beautiful and the actual choreography of the fight scenes was very well handled. Add to this a brilliant score and a clever story (although it's structure owed a debt to Kurosawa's 'Rashomon') and you have a masterpiece that has been seriously undervalued by critics.

I loved this movie so much, I don't see it mentioned very often but it's truly a sweet, yet sad and heartbreaking little tale, definitely worth seeing. I cry whenever I even think about the ending. :(

A guilty pleasure of a film, alternating between extreme giddiness and extreme shrillness. There are a lot of twists and revelations, some good, some overdone. The cast is uniformly excellent, with my personal favorite being the neurotic Augustine, played by Isabelle Huppert.

The Good Thief - super sexy, stylish, and sophisticated. Getting past the mumbling delivery of Nolte et al is just the beginning. This is by no means a 'by the numbers' movie, which is pleasantly surprising considering it's a tired old premise. Some reckon this falls into a hole. I loved it the whole way through.

This collection of shorts was, well, it was boring. I wanted to like it, really i did. I love seven samurai and yojimbo, but this just didn't do it for me.
Sme of the cinematography was beautiful, but that was not enough to overcome the lack of story for me. There were loooong shots with no dialogue and not much action.
I did enjoy the last dream, with the old man talking about living simply. That really got me thinking. But the rest of it, ugh.

Both are fantastic, well acted films and in my top 100 of all time. 8 1/2 is the better film by a hair although it's pacing was a bit slow at times, and 400 Blows really affects whenever I watch it, especially the heartbreaking ending. :( Hope you like them!

Back in my horror geek days, I actually paid a horrendous sum for a VHS copy of this baby because I couldn't get enough of splatter movies, and rumour had that it was the most violent flick ever made. Therefore I had to get my hands on this. Was a bit of a letdown, though. Anyways, a couple of months later I bought DEAD ALIVE because it was supposedly the goriest movie ever, one year later RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3, followed by THE BEYOND, and so on and so on. Boy, sweet memories... :D

To Live - 9/10
Zhang Yimou's epic film is also his best, as it follows a vast and detailed story of a family struggling to survive against the changes of time and the newfound Communist regime. The film got Yimou (and lead actress Gong Li) into a lot of trouble with the Chinese government, but such an extraordinary film should not be brushed away based on that or dismissed as propaganda. It's a beautiful film, lavished with strong acting and a sense that while the storytellers of our time may be gone, we still have lifespans like this to treasure.

I completely agree. "To Live" is my second favorite Zhang Yimou film ever (next to Raise the Red Lantern) and a powerful piece of work, one of those films that really depressed me but also had me to know more about life and to treasure it. It's so sad, but yet so thought provoking.

Bad Eggs is great debut from writer/director Tony Martin, starring well-known local talent.
We Aussies tend to enjoy our heroes portrayed as average-looking and bumbling, yet honest, lovable, and deceptively smart. On the flip side, we enjoy seeing our authorities and celebrities portrayed as dodgy, shady, corrupt, and fallible. (The tall-poppy syndrome.) This is a typical tale of a bumbling cop duo (Mick Molloy and Bob Franklin) who trip onto a trail of corruption, which goes a long way. In too deep and on the run, they must outsmart their hunters, and work out how to uncover the ring of corruption. Dragged into the mess is a local-rag reporter (the excellent Judith Lucy), who happens to be Molloy's ex-girlfriend, and a shy, conservative systems engineer (a very funny Alan Brough).
In what's essentially a piss-take of the local police, it's a 'serious' comedy, with most of the dialogue delivered in a overly-dramatic, dead-pan style. This fits in with the general style of the film, shot in a slightly pale, ghostly grading, with a score that helps the film keep it's faux-mystique.
Molloy and Lucy are fantastic together, and the sub-plot of their characters finding themselves helplessly thrown together again, after a less-than-amicable break-up, works very well. Bob Franklin is the real scene-stealer, though, as Molloy's slightly under-noticed partner.
Martin uses Franklin's brilliant straight-faced delivery, to help keep things from getting too serious. The debutant also livens things up with the use two truly excellent sight-gags, one of which is a hilarious narrated recollection by Franklin's character.
This film is good enough to even forgive the increasingly embarrassing number of times (four I think!) that the tip of the boom mike can be seen in a couple of scenes. I don't think Mr. Martin will skip any more editing sessions for future projects! His raw talent, however, is plain to see. That, and the intelligence displayed in not trying to turn his debut film into more than it should be, has me looking forward to his next project.
Hopefully Bad Eggs will see the light of day overseas, as it's as darkly charming as other recent successful local films, The Castle, The Dish, and Crackerjack, are uplifting. A comeback of sorts, to the charming Aussie films of the seventies and early eighties? Please!

..This foreign film, I just happened to find, was possibly the best movie, I have ever seen, knocking Tron at the number one spot on my list. I find myself at BlockBuster, looking at the new rental section, and all I happen to see is just..all of these Romantic-teen-idol- movies. Or rather, movies a normal male wouldnt touch with a pole. So, after taking a peek into the video games corner, which had nothing I wanted, I decided I would just go home, And stare at the television, and try to watch a reality tv show, and try not to change the station. As I walked to the exit, I spot an unusual dvd with the name "BANGKOK DANGEROUS". At first, being an idiot of a adolescent, I laughed at the word "BANGKOK" for a few moments. But, as I take a look at the cover, I see a male...with a pistol in his hand, and sunglasses blocking his shady features. For some reason, that cover spoke to me, so I purchased the movie, and the rest is past history. Bangkok Dangerous 10/10

A lot of the humour is quite subtle, and I didn't really see it the 1st time (after T3, pirates, charlies angels etc etc this summer I'm not used to subtle) A really funny film, well acted. Possibily the best film I've seen at the cinema this year. Well worth checking out.

I was fortunate enough for one of mine to drag me to La Haine during it's sortie in '95. At the time I was certainly naive as to the plight of such youngsters, as I live in a relatively low-crime, low-poverty city (Melbourne). Definately an eye-opener at the time.

No rating. It was one of the most unpleasant experiences I have ever had while watching a film; it's erotic, yes, but not in a good way; it wasn't beautiful, sometimes it grossed me out and made me feel sick to my stomach, which I GUESS was what the film was trying to do, the leads were very good in their roles but the whole movie is disturbing, brutal, and that last scene really was a bit too much for me.

A little bit diseppointing, mainly cause i didn't feel involved emotionally in the story. The film is very episodic, which makes it somehow disjoined, some things in the camerawork and editing of the film made me think in a first-time director work, and the narration voice was most of the times unnecesary and even annoying. But all this doesn't mean i didn't like it. That's just the flaws i found in a movie that other than that has a great story and good performances. It got to my brain, but not to my heart.

Together, by Kaige Chen (Farewell My Concubine).
It had a chance to really get some dirt under the fingernails with an excellent set up, but chose to be a bit of a sugary tear-jerker instead. Nothing to really dislike, but nothing to sink yer teeth into, either. Beautiful music, polished performances, well shot, and well directed; if it was intended to do nothing more than make you feel. Kind of a Chinese Ron Howard movie. :)

Audition - 7.5/10
Extremely cringe-inducing in parts. Not your typical psychotic, spurned lover tale of revenge. The problem is, for the first hour or so, I had trouble keeping my eyes open and staying awake. There's little in the way of chills, but there is a palpable tension that just builds and builds, until the final half hour, where everything turns f'ed up and gory. Upon going to bed, I found myself racing to my room down the dark hallway...I was very unnerved.

A technically beautiful film, as well as a slow paced tour guide through 300 years of Russian history. I probably should've been more familiar with the details and who the people were and what not, since that was the flaw that brought the movie down a notch for me. Still, as a stunt, filming in one take for an hour and a half proved to be quite masterful.

Hero - 4.5/5 (beautiful cinematography throughout)
Battle Royale - 4.5/5 (had a big old grin on my face from start to finish)

I really love Miike's films, but Ichi was just too damn slow-paced for me.
That was quite surprising since Audition is so perfectly paced IMO.
Happiness of the Katakiris(7/10) wasn't slow-paced either.....
Oh well, I haven't seen too many other of his movies. Maybe the man is just wildly inconsistent, since he does work FAST. I'd rather have Miike finish 3-4 films a year, and strike gold occassionally rather than have him take his time(Terence Malick, anyone?) and have the results be utterly disappointing.

Over the weekend I watched two Takashi Miike movies.
Gozu is an ultraweird fusion of David Lynch style weird and David Cronenberg style body horror. It makes fuck all sense but is in turns hilarious and disturbing from start to finish. More proof, if any more was needed, that Takashi Miike needs some serious therapy. 4/5
Graveyard Of Honor is a remake of Kinji Fukasaku's (Battle Royale) 1975 Yakuza masterpiece of the same name. Except it's not exactly a remake. Rather Miike has gone back to the source novel and re-adapted it. It's a stunningly ferocious movie about the downfall of a low ranking Yakuza and is probably the best Miike movie i've seen thus far. It features and award worthy central performance of subtle brutality from Goro Kishitani in the role of Rikuo Ishimatsu. 5/5
I'll be posting more in depth reviews of these movies after i've allowed them enough time to properly sink in. I indulged in a Takashi Miike buying spree and still have another eleven of his movies to watch. If they are anywhere near as good as these two then it's gonna be a whole loada fun.

Das Boot - I wasn't as impressed as others, but it still chilled me a touch. Maybe I wasn't in the mood.
Calendar Girls - warm, funny, and somewhat poignant.
Springtime In A Small Town - a tribute to China's filmmakers of yesterday. This was painfully slow, and intentionally so. Judging by the teary-eyed Chinese-Australians sniffling their way to the exit as the credits rolled, it's poignancy was lost on this ignorant westerner.

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not - 8/10
What happens if you strip away the sugary veneer of Amelie and present it for what it really is, a tale of obsessive love? You get this strange little gem of a film. Audrey Tautou shines as the "nuttier than a 10 pound fruitcake" stalker, in love with a doctor who may or may not have deliberately used and dumped her. What I like about the film is that it delivers two halves: one from each person's perspective about what REALLY went on. It's both a thriller and a comedy, although with really dark tinges.

Gettin' Square (Australia, 2003)
See this film, if only for every scene with David Wenham (Faramir, from The Lord Of The Rings trilogy). He steals each scene as a somehow lovable criminal junkie with a sense of mateship, in a film about trying to go straight.
The film itself is nothing new or special, but the performances are decent, and although the plot starts to become predictable, Wenham keeps your interest. The court room scene is hilarious.

Swimming Pool just filled Aussie screens, and by jingo it floated my boat!
This film has a lot to offer, both mentally and aesthetically. It's an intruiging character study, first and foremost. THAT makes it re-watchable on it's own. It's got some rather saucy bits (literally ;)) as well, which shouldn't harm DVD/Vid sales. I'll dish out for a copy to call my own.
Whether you enjoy the abstract ending because it makes you think, or hate it because you think it leaves the ending open for conflicting interpretation, it's worth seeing for the character study, the photography, and the chick who likes hanging her norgs out. Wa-hey!

The film's premise wasn't built-up to a believable level before the movie got into full swing, which is a pet hate. Other than that, the film's quite intruiging, thanks mainly to the character transformation of the lead, impressively pulled off by Rachael Blake (Lantana).

A friend of mine kept pressuring me to watch it, and I'm glad I finally did. It was so good. It was subtle, and that's what I tend to like the most, subtlety. (except for the silent film scene which was supposed to be over-the-top) It's definitely the best of the popular foreign films that have crossed over in recent years like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Life is Beautiful, and Amelie, all of which I found to be overrated. Talk to Her, however, is a keeper. I hear it gets better with more viewings and I'm eager to watch it again.

Well, I saw Vanilla Sky first and yes I really liked it, so I wasn't sure if I'd like Abre Los Ojos......but surprisingly I really enjoyed this film as well. I thought it had better acting especially the actor who played Tom Cruise's part in Vanilla Sky. I also thought Penelope Cruz did a better job as well in this first version, rather than the second one. Vanilla Sky, on the other hand , of course, had better visuals, which were dazzling in fact, the film was also more cheery and bright while the original was more somber. I also prefered Cameron Diaz than the original actress in the first film.
Both were good fims though, and quite enjoyable. :)

Considered by many to be the greatest French film of all time, and perhaps one of the greatest films ever, Marcel Carne's 1945 masterpiece of epic romance is one of the greatest love stories of all time. It's a Parisian version of Gone With the Wind, although without a stubborn female lead, but plenty of memorable characters and witty, poetic dialogue. Not sure if I can call this my favorite film of all time, but it will definitely go on my all time top ten list.

Kukushka (Russia, 2003)
"September of 1944, a few days before Finland went out of the Second World War. A chained to a rock Finnish sniper-kamikadze Wille managed to set himself free. Ivan, a captain of the Soviet Army, arrested by the Front Secret Police 'Smersh', has a narrow escape. They are soldiers of the two enemy armies. A Lapp woman Anni gives a shelter to both of them at her farm. For Anni they are not enemies, but just men."
...A good, low-budget anti-war film with strong performances and nice scenery. The story concept was excellent, but the 3rd act left a lot to be desired. The "death" scene near the end was way too long and rather pointless... It lowered my grade from 8/10 to 7/10.

Ouch! This is like a stake in the heart. Breaking the Waves was one of my fav's of the 90's. I figured it would suit your taste, but I guess not. :)

Battle Royale - 7/10
Starts out as a great violent comedy, in the vein of Dead Alive, but it turns a little bit muddled about 30 minutes in. Too many characters, and some stories were brought up and given closure without me caring a single bit. Is there a longer version to this film? Still, without one memorable shot in the film (IMO), this still gets a pass from me because I did enjoy its goofy spirit (Takeshi Kitano munching on cookies while giving orders was trashy fun, at best). I still don't get the reason for it being banned here in the U.S.; it's no more violent than any Rambo flick, and it didn't really make me cringe with disgust.

LA RESIDENCIA - 8.5/10
Probably noone knows this movie, since it's an spanish horror film from the 60's. But if you have the chance of seeing it, DO IT! Creepy atmosphere, twisted plot, perfectly constructed characters, thrilling pacing... An horror movie in its best example. The censorship of that era surprisingly helped the movie as well: there's a subtle sub-plot of sadomasochism, lesbianism and insanity that works amazingly well as it is shown, suggesting it and never really showing much of it, and making double-meaning scenes that added much substance to what could have been a mere entertaining. The reject for the effectivism in which most newbie horror movies fall is also a good point in its favor. The deaths are shooted with elegance, originality, intelligence and without trying to impact with sudden editing or loud music.
The director, Chicho Ibañez Serrador, is quite likely the most important person in the developing of spanish television, and he's responsible of some of the best tv series (Historias Para No Dormir) and short films (La Television, El Asfalto) in the history of Spain, as well as the most succesful contests ever (Un, Dos, Tres, and many more). But I somehow doubted he could be able to direct so well (i hadn't borned when this series and tv films were aired, so i just know them by their fame). He just made 2 films for the big screen, and this is one. And I can't wait to see the other!! Amenabar wasn't alone, before him there was Chicho!
As apparently it was released overseas, here you have the link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064888/) at imdb. See the different titles to find if you know it, and read the plot to see if you're interested.
Hero - 7.5/10
Flawed, but still very good. It's one of the most beautifully shooted films in movie history without any doubt, but it didn't serve a purpose at its level. Too many sword fights that let too little time to develop the most interesting aspects of teh plot. The social and political messages are slimmed to give all the importance to the spirit/sword/caligraphy topic, and it's not that this isn't well made or it isn't interesting as well. It is that the other things should have been as deeply touched and complexly exposed as this. Then this movie would have been a masterpiece, because the material was really good.
That, some editing flaws (some scenes are abruptly edited and should have needed more detention, and there are some abrupt transitions among scenes as well), and the repetitiveness of some fights (as well as their, at times, too fantastic look a la CTHD, although they don't have anything to do thematically) hinder the movie.
Still, the eye is so impressed that it doesn't matter that much.

Gaz bar blues
Quiet little drama about a family run gas station in one of the poorer areas of Montreal, set in the late 80's. It took a little time to get going, but it's worth a look. I liked how they worked in a sub-plot about the fall of the Berlin wall to open up the film thematically.

I read the name Depardieu on the cover and the name Perez.. so I thought nice, the 2 of them back together since Cyrano De Bergerac.. but then I finally realised it wasn't Gerard but faget son Guillaume..
The movie has a good plot.. initial plot that is.. but slowly spreads into every direction with no real goal.
Horrible ending, bad acting, bad direction..

El Topo (The mole)
“The mole is an animal that digs tunnels under the ground, searching for the sun. Sometimes his journey brings him to the surface. When he sees the sun, he is blinded.”
Christ as a gunslinger? I can't decide whether this was a western on steroids ... or estacy.
The ultimate cult movie. I don't think El topo was ever released on video. Back in the day; the lesbian scenes; the fetishism; the freaks; the hard core symbolism ... this was probably was some pretty potent stuff, but now, thirty years after it's initial release, it's hopelessly dated and unintentionally funny.
The sound editing was an absolute hoot. For example; the jingle jangle of spurs as he's walking through sand. Men's voices for female characters. But still some great images remain.
