For some reason these never really took off but I liked doing them and one person was interested in my T2 review so here goes my review of my latest buy The Thing:

Movie:
Obviously being made in 1982 it isn't going to be as visually impressive as today's films, no CGI just cardboard! The concept behind the film is just brilliant however. The origional film The Thing Fom Another World had the horror based around the appearance of the creature, The Thing achieves the fear by a much simpler premise, going back to the origional story 'Who Goes There' and the concept of not knowing who is the 'thing'. The acting is superb, Kurt Russell gives one of his best ever performances (better than Tombstone!!) and you can generally believe in the other characters. This film was made before John Carpenter became crappy! with classics like Halloween and Escape From N.Y. being released in the same era. I give it 8/10.

Sound:
Dolby 5.1 on a 1983 release?! It's true. The film is very dialogue based, there are no major shootouts and there are just a few explosions, so DD isn't really needed, but it is welcome and there are a few great effects to listen out for. 9/10

Picture:
This is where the film surprised me, normally old films have such a crappy transfer that they're impossible to watch! Not however for The Thing bar a few black speckles (literally I noticed one or two) The picture is crystal clear. 9/10

Extras:
Why this isn't called a special edition is beyond me! extras include a documentary, feature length commentary, outtakes, storyboards, trailer and tons more. 10/10

my overall score: 9/10

Nice review Bob. I agree whole heartedly with everything you say about this terrific DVD. As my collection spirals hopelessly upwards, this STILL remains one of the finest discs in my collection. Quite simply, a classic.

(PS Managed to pick up EFNY on DVD at a film fair in Camden this weekend - no extras but it's great to just have it on DVD abd widescreen to boot!)
