***SPOILERS DISCUSSED*** Hi, folks. I just recently rented "The RIng," thinking I was going to get a quality horror film for a change. I rented this, basing this on the fact that it did well at the box office and the high ranking it has at internet movie data base. I thought I was going to be creeped out and have one scary ride of a film. Turns out it was anything but that. Even the tape itself wasn't that freaky. It was just some bizare clues that helped Rachel track down Samara in the end. The tree, ladder, woman in the mirror and the lighthoiouse; while all odd images were not scary in the slightest. The only thing that strartled me a little bit the first time, was when the horse got loose and went after Rachel. Looking in retrospect, this sequence makes me laugh about how unintentionally funny the scene is in the attempt to scare me. While I do suffer from a nervous disorder I did not find this film scary, creepy, suspenseful or whatever synonym you want to throw in there. Even surprisingly, at the Hollywood Bitchslap web site, this is ranked four out of five stars. This coming from a web site that rips into films and underrates quality made films all the time. This film was as scary as an old animated Scooby Doo episode. All this film had going for it was it had a nice structured mystery plot about finding out who was on the tape. So who is with me that this film is not all that it is cracked up to be?

I definitely agree. I was not impressed at all with this thing. It put me to sleep. Nothing about this movie scared me in the slightest. One big snore, if you ask me.

The only part that was spooky was when samarha came out of the tv and showed her weird face..

I thought it was alright.
Certainly wasn't anything compared to 'The Others'.

It might have been better to see it in a theater.

I won't ever see it again, but I will agree in saying it's not as awesome as a lot of my friends claim to think it is.

But to each his/her own, I guess. I had a better time in 'Signs' than I did with 'The Ring'.

I like the part in the beginning though, when the girl sees a reflection in the TV and then screams. That was kinda cool.

I though it:

SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED

Well, it was dssapointing. I saw the origional beforehand, and this really just felt like a lazy rehash with brian Cox chunked in for good measure and Samara's back story tweaked a bit. Lazy lazy lazy. And not scary. At all.

I've seen scarier thinks floating in my parents toilet the day after Mexican Food Monday.

First time I saw it was in the theater and it was good because of the combination of anticipation, the audience, and the great sound system. I saw it again when it hit the video store and sat in shock once it was over saying "I liked this? I thought this was scary?"

Yeah, In theaters it was a whole diferent experience. People were crying, jumping aroundin fright etc. It was so creepy/scary. Then I watched it with my parents on video. Not nearly as effective, unless you watch it in the dark with a huge sound system at like 3am or someting, I could see that being a little creepy.

Yeah, I found this movie to be very overrated. It's a well-made film and all, but after the opening sequence it's all downhill. That beginning segment of the film with the two girls really had my heart pounding! The rest of it, though, just plays it too safe and too conventional. Heck, Naomi Watts' previous horror experience (Children Of The Corn 4) was creepier, and she considers it the low point of her career!

I didn't like the Ring at all past the opening scene. I was very drained by the shitty Feardotcom that was released shortly before and when this movie came out finally, I was uninterested in it because I pretty much knew every plot twist that was coming thanx to the shitty rip off. Except when the "shocking" twist comes at the end of the film, I was so uninterested in the film by that point and so begging for it to end, that i just didn't care. Quote me on this: "THE RING SUX!"

Woah, it was waay creepy IMO. Maybe not as creepy as The Signs, but hellofa creepy and I loved it for that.

I thought The Ring was a terrible movie. I liked the opening like many others here but after that I was praying for the movie to end. I gave it another try later at home and I found it even worse the second time I watched it.

I'd have to say that I waited until this movie came out on video and am glad that I did. It saved me five bucks. I stuck in the DVD sat back and watched trying to keep an open mind. Like most the opening scene was fairly decent however once the story continued on I found myself asking, "Is this over yet?" I felt it dragged on a little bit longer than it should have. The only part that I really enjoyed was the end......

*********SPOILER***********

That part where Samara starts to come out of the TV was koo' but that was about it.

This movie was not scary. It relied more on cheap movie tricks ("boo!" scares) than actual frightening images. It didn't respect the audience's intelligence, so it tacked on a flashback at the end, and it didn't know when to stop.

The Ring wasn't as scary as I thought it would be, but there were a few scenes that just wouldn't stay out of my head(Katie in the closet, the dream sequence, the many jump scenes, the ending, and overall dreading atmosphere). Other then that, it wasnt too scary. I loved the visuals though, and the directing was awesome, and its nice to see that Ehren Kruger(sp?)made a more mature script sinse he also did SCREAM 3(Which was good, just not as great as the others.) The Japanese one looks creepier, I need to check out that one as well.

I thought it was a decent film, but not anywhere near the hype that it was given.

It's recently become the latest "popcorn flick" for my girlfriend's nine year old daughter... Not really the movie of choice that I wish to see two to three times on a weekly basis...

Don't worry... I'm slowly working her on Maximum Overdrive, so we can both continue to drive my girlfriend insane.

I found the video tape very trippy, Samara was disturbing, the plot was interesting. So I don't find it overrated. However, it didn't affect me the way it seemed to others.

I personally found the Ring to be incredibly horrifying! From it's great opening, through to the terrifying climax, it was a solid horror flick! Easily one of the scariest films I've seen in ages... and coming out of the theatre that first night I saw it... I personally found myself comparing it to the shock appeal of the Exoricst.

I'm not embarassed to admit that I lost sleep over this film. I found it to be a nightmare of a movie, and the images found on that cursed tape seemed to be burned into my memory! Needless to say, IMHO it was a perfect horror film!

Having watched it again since it was released on DVD, I'll admit, it wasn't as scary -- whereas the Exorcist remains as horrifying on each repeated viewing. So perhaps I was a little hasty that night when I made my comparison between the two films. However, as I said, the Ring remains to me, to be one of the most disturbing horror films I've ever seen. ;)

I thought this movie was muuuch better than most of Hollywood's recent "blockbuster" fright fests, such as The Others, Sixth Sense (sucked), or Signs (which I found to be a pathetic movie - aside from yet another strong Mel Gibson performance). I've seen Ringu and, while I enjoyed the original more, I thought that this was one of the more admirable remakes I've seen.

I think the Ring is really good, not the best movie ever but SURPRISINGLY good for a Hollywood movie.

As for scary.... how many movies do you really think are scary??

PS. why is it when someone tries something different with a horror movie so many schmoes have to rip it a new one instead of appreciating it for what it is?? (the Ring, Blair Witch, 28 Days, etc.)

I recently bought Ringu but haven't watched it yet. I have seen The Ring, and I'm reserving opinions on how scary it is until I've seen the original. The Ring didn't disturb me, but I was impressed by how unScream like it is compared to the other horror films of this era. I've read most of the threads here that compare The Ring to Ringu, which is why I've tried not come to a complete opinion about The Ring so as to not be prejudiced for or against Ringu before watching it. I will say the horse scene in The Ring irritated me to no end--lady, the horse wants nothing to do with you, leave him the fuck alone. I'm a horsy person, and did not enjoy that scene at all.

I think this movie is great, and yes, I probably have no business posting on a thread for ppl who don't like it, but IMO it's easily one of the best horror movies made in the last 10 years.

Oh yeah, I haven't seen the original so...

I really enjoyed the movie. The weird thing is though, that many people keep saying how scary The Exorcist and TCM are. I saw both of these films recently for the first time and I think that though TCM had very disturbing atmosphere, it wasn`t that scary and The Exorcist, while being a really good horror movie, didn`t have any scenes that scared me. On the other hand, I find the new wave of horror movies really scary. Blair Witch 1,2; The Ring; The 6th Sense; The Others and most of all The Signs scared me really deep down. Those are some really good and scary movies IMO.

After hearing how scary this movie I could not wait to rent it. I put in the vcr in anticipation and I was let down. I was freaked out early on as they played the video before the movie actually began and I had know clue what the hell was going on. The opening sequence and the scene when SPOILERS Samara comes out of the T.V END SPOILERS where the only scary parts in the movie. 5/10

Well, I disagree completely, I thought it was a great movie; but that's cool.

I see you're in College Station, are you a student there? I just graduated with an English degree from A&M, and now I'm in South Korea to teach it. Video stores here have tons of old horror movies to rent!

I feel the same way, but it could be because I saw the American one first so I like it more. I don't know, the American just seemed better. Ringu was still great in it's own right though.

Well, I haven't seen the original yet, but I really enjoyed the remake.

I think that these are the main reasons people dislike this movie.

a) hype ruined it for people.
b) people refuse to, or are unable to enjoy it because they saw the remake first.
c) people refuse to like it because it was a success, and was especially popular with teens.

I'm sure that some people genuinely didn't enjoy it, but come on, Horrible? Piece of shit? Sucked? I think that's going a bit overboard. I think that a lot of people are saying that it's horrible because they disliked it, and when people started saying how great it is, they lowered their opinion of it even more. It's only natural that this would occur. But what the hell do I know?

Oh, and someone else said it relied on boo scares to frighten the audience. I couldn't disagree more. There were a few boo scares, but what I loved about The Ring was the creepy atmosphere that pervaded the entire film. That's what made the movie for me.

Man, I'd like to see some of you people make a SCARY movie... but I digress.

I think the remake WIPES THE FLOOR with the original, which has massive plotholes I just couldn't ignore. Plus, the remake does ten times better of a job using imagery than the original.

I for one saw it in the theatre, and I think it was very scary, very creepy, and very intelligent. I'm dumbfounded that this many people do not like it.

I get the sense it's a bit of the "punk rock" syndrome, ie convince yourself to hate it before you even see it because it's popular.

Well like I always say, PUNK ROCK IS DEAD.

And even if you guys never like it, I appreciate it and I suppose that's all that counts.

One of my major pet peeves is when people resort to claiming another person doesn't like a movie because it's hip to not like it.
Or vice versa.

I don't not enjoy a movie simply because I like to go against the minority.

I for one did not think The Ring was all that great, simply because that's how I felt about it.

Im gonna go with 2 easy uneducated answers for this piece of shit movie:

It sucked my cock, and licked my nuts

OR

It worked my tits, and busted my balls...

You pick your favorite... Both statements DO apply!

This made your blood boil too?!? What was this woman's problem? She would NOT leave the horse alone with anyone with an IQ over 50 would realize what's going on -- stay away, it calms. I hope she felt a lot of guilt for that

I know, I'm surprised at all this negativity. Every movie has some dissapointed fans but it seems like people are disliking it for the wrong reasons. I thought it kept you watching and had a mystery of sorts. Also unpredictable. Some people dont like films that make them think.

Maybe people need to not hype movies so much in their mind from listening to others before they watch them. It seems like the pedestals people set are impossible to reach.

I felt that it was scary, but then again so was The Blair Witch Project (what movie was this again?). I feel that after the hypes died down, and a sequel comes out, it'll end up just like The Blair Witch (oh yeah, that movie about those kids. Yeah, that movie sucked after a while).

Xipe Totec

Well, I liked (and still like) both Blair Witch and The Ring very much.

By the way, I just developed a theory about hatred towards some movies on some threads. My guess is that it is a growing process and started with the tone of the first posts of the thread. Someone says something a little more negative about a movie that is somewhat loved by some people. Those people respond maybe a little too agressivly. While no one considers it a masterpiece nor a pile of garbage, just tilt to one side a little (positive, negative), they then have the feeling their oppinion is under attack and change their usual statements ("it was ok"/"it wasn`t that good") into "It was Amazing"/"it totally sucked"
Or it`s just my guess. This thread actually isn`t that on the edge yet, I`ve seen threads about 28 Days Later and House of 1000 Corpses, where people say that these movies are total rip-offs and should have never been made, while I just don`t believe that they really mean it. Weird thing is, in this kind of debates I always tend to take the in-movies-defence side. I just feel like, maybe the movie didn`t really come out as good as it was planned, no movie deserves to be bashed (among horror movies at least), unless it was made by a money hungry director that doesn`t have no talent nor imagination at all.

randythetool

I still think THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is the scariest movie I've seen in years. It's the only one that still creeped me out on my way home, hoping the front yard was well-lit, etc. Good horror plays on the imagination, and BLAIR WITCH did just that. THE RING played on computer animation and a handful of stupid images that were intended to be scary, but failed as horrific concepts.

The Ring had a few creepy moments but overall I enjoyed it because of the plot. It was just...interesting. I wanted to finish it to the end to see what happened.
