Saw it a couple of nigths ago and still can't get it out of my mind. Wow! I remember somebody on this board mentioning that The Sixth Sense partially borrowed the plot from this long forgotten shocker. The movie is centered around a small coastal town sheriff (played by James Farentino) who is investigating a series of brutal murders commited by the townsfolk. As his investigation progresses, he learns more about the town's secret and his own shocking past. If you like gory whodunnits with a 70s zombie flavour, then this one is for you. The storyline is emotionally-draining as well; especially Farentino's relationship with his somehow estranged wife and the revelations that stem from it. FX are by then-unknown Stan Winston. Watch out for young Robert Englund, whom I didn't recognize at first, and Lisa Blount ("Prince of Darkness").

Anybody else seen this?

This flick's getting a double-disc treatment when it sees release on DVD this year. For a nearly unknown and forgotten movie that doesn't even have the cult status of "Near Dark" that's quite a surprise. I have the movie VHS right now, and I always thought it was a clever if not especially mind-blowing horror flick. I think the main problem is that it goes for gore 'n' murder when it would have really been more effective had it gone with the psychological angle. Still, not bad flick at all.

BTW, IMHO the comparison to "The Sixth Sense" is a bit tenuous.

The DVD release is a little surprising given the obscurity of this film. On the other hand, they're probably hoping to cash in on "big" names in it, namely Farentino and Englund. Plus it was written by Dan O'Bannon who also wrote Alien.

I agree that all that gore was unnecessary. If this movie was being made today, they would have taken the psychological route for sure.

I bought a copy of this movie years ago and love it. The coroner character was my favorite him and his choice of music. For me the ending was the best part of all. Again I won't give any spoiler because I don't want to ruin it for someone who has yet to see the movie.

I rented this flick last night and really enjoyed it.It really had some disturbing moments and some great gore. The part where the family was trying to get away was filled with suspense. The ending totally blew me away because I just wasn't expecting it at all.Excited to hear about the DVD and plan on buying this very underated movie.

The Late Jack Albertson played the coroner in the film, you may also remeber him as Charlie's grandfather in Willy Wonka and the Chocalate Factory. Dead and Buried was his last film before he died.
