View Full Version : Goodbye Lenin!
Has anyone seen this film? It's about an east german woman who is a hardcore commie, but is in a coma for the fall of the wall in 89. When she wakes up her son is told by the doctor that a major shock would kill her, so he has to hide the arrival of burger king, coca cola, and all the other capitalists from her.
It opens in the uk next week. I quite liked the trailer but I'm not 100% sure I'll bother with it at the cinema.
Any points of view to make my mind up either way?

I really want to see this, but no cinemas near me had it, so I'll have to wait for rental, which hopefully will be soon.
It looks very good IMO.

Yeah, I read some reviews of this, but living in the US means I'll probably never see it unless it's released on DVD.

It's brilliant, mate. Check it out (sort of like Life Is Beautiful if it was shagged by the episode of Friends where Joey has to pretend to his grandma that he is in her favourite TV show and then halfway through a cynical French movie shows up and it all turns into a bit of farce by way of a black comedy). Are they not showing it at the GFT? I think they are. Try and grab a timetable and see if it is on the schedule some times soon...
German comedy - there's a googlewhack if I ever did hear one.
I've seen it twice now- this thread was started over a month ago Reigh. And yeah I loved it. I thought it was better the 2nd time which doesn't usually happen for me and is a good sign. Well worth checking out. 9/10.

Liked it, but it digressed after a while IMHO. I found it to be a lot more interesting - and funny - when the characters were coping with the fall of the Wall, compared to the whole family drama involving the lost father in the second half.

I thoroughly enjoyed it too. I plan to buy it soon, when I have the $$.
A wonderful blend of humorous and moving segments.

I liked this movie. It really takes you into what living in East Berlin was like.
Spoiler Warning:
Like having to wait 2 years for your car that you've ordered. And when the wall falls, a girl giving up her engineering degree to work at Burger King. It shows you the good and the negative things that came about from the influx of western culture overnight into a place that had no conception of it. I found it interesting.
