HOLLYWOOD - Fox Searchlight, in an unusual marketing move to pump up the buzz surrounding its horror hit 28 Days Later, will attach an alternate, darker ending to all 1,400 prints of the film still playing in theaters.

Although outtakes, filmmaker narration and alternate endings have become an expected part of DVD movie packages, Fox Searchlight says it is aware of no other instance in which alternate scenes were added to a film still in theatrical release.

The ending now in theaters was actually the film's original scripted ending but was ditched by screenwriter Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle during production in favor of a darker coda. That grim ending was included in the first cut of the film and tested with preview audiences in theaters. But Boyle and his filmmaking team ultimately rejected the scene, set in a hospital, as simply too bleak.

"We felt, 'We can't do this to people,' because it was such a tough journey anyway," Boyle said. The filmmakers went back and filmed the more upbeat ending they had originally written, which tested much better and is now the film's final scene.

The darker ending, which already appears as a feature on the British DVD of the film, will appear beginning next Friday at the conclusion of the credits. Otherwise, projectionists would have to splice in the four minutes of footage or Searchlight would have had to strike new prints.

Searchlight contemplated re-releasing two versions of the film. But Motion Picture Association of America rules prevent two versions of the same film from playing at the same time."

I'm kind of wondering what this is going to be like, what does everyone else think?

 im really surprised to hear fox doing something like this. Ive been thinking of seeing this one again and now im definitly going to have to. Hopefully this new ending will fit better with the overall feel of the movie. I was a little confused at first, with it suddenly jumping from all bleak and freaky to hopefull and cheery. With any luck this will help explain a few things.

I liked the happy ending. Its always good to have happy endings sometimes. But, I really want to see the "darker" alternate ending.

I actually like the darker ending better (I have the DVD, so have seen all th different endings :) ), and think it will do down well with audiences.

It's a highly unusual move though for Fox to make, and one that makes me wonder if it will set a new trend for films of all genres, with directors filming several possible endings, and then switching them if audiences and/or critics slate their first choice...........

In my opinion it makes a good film even better! :)

I'd assume the darker ending is (SPOILERS) the one where Hanna and Selena are trying to bring Jim back to life in the hospital and we keep seeing his flashbacks which show how he ended up in the coma in the first place, after which he dies and Selena & Hanna walk through the door with the guns?

I think you'd be assuming correctly, Scully.

Although I think the storyboarded ending would have been the best of the three endings if they'd filmed it...........

Yeah in some way the darker ending seems like it would fit the rest of the movie better, than that of the happy ending. Still a good ending, but a little corny, and not much is explained. Good movie. "HELLO"

Now THIS is something they could do with Freddy Vs Jason.

Show the film with, say, Freddy winning. Then, after the credits, show the film with Jason winning.

Excellent idea Scully! That way both sets of fans would be satisfied and we won't have to wait until the DVD release to see both versions! :)

I believe it's already showing, at least that's what the previews say.
