View Full Version : BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER - Season 4 Tournament!
urbanlegend23

Well, my Buffy Season 5 tournament was a success, so I thought I'd do another TV tournament. This time it is for Buffy Season 4.
All rounds will be in the same thread.
ROUND 1
Matches List:
The Freshman vs. Restless
Living Conditions vs. Primeval
The Harsh Light of Day vs. The Yoko Factor
Fear, Itself vs. New Moon Rising
Beer Bad vs. Where the Wild Things Are
Wild at Heart vs. Superstar
The Initiative vs. Who Are You
Pangs vs. This Year's Girl
Something Blue vs. Goodbye Iowa
Hush vs. The I in Team
Doomed vs. A New Man
We'll start off with...
THE FRESHMAN - Season Opener
While Willow blossoms in her college environment; Buffy has trouble adjusting, and her Slaying suffers from it.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_1.jpg
vs.
RESTLESS - Season Finale
The spirit of the First Slayer tries to kill Buffy, Willow, Xander and Giles in their dreams.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_22.jpg
I liked both of them, and think The Freshman is extremely underrated. However you just can't go past Restless, one of the show's most unique, surreal and best episodes.

I'll go with the Freshman, I can't remember seeing Restless.
Ghostface 2000

this is a tough one but i think i will vote for err...Restless
Restless, though weadons half hearted denial on the com. that it was not influenced by twin peaks was pretty rich.
Beer Bad vs. Where the Wild Things Are
Oh good, the worst episode ever versus the 2nd worst episode ever. That should be fun!

Woohoo! Another Buffy tournament! I couldn't vote in the Angel tournament, cause I never watch it, so I'm glad you did this one.
Anyway, The Freshman was a decent, if unspectacular season opener, whereas Restless is a wonderful, trippy, intriguing, scary, hilarious, awesome, stupendous episode!
Sorry about the excessive use of adjectives, I just really love Restless.

How was it influenced by Twin Peaks? Because of the red curtains? That's really the only similarities I can see. Just curious.

Restless in the lead.
I agree, WTWTA vs. BB should be a great match! Those episodes SUCK - especially WTWTA!
I see Chosen tomorrow. Off-topic because its S7, but I have to express my excited-ness somewhere. I am so upset the show is ending, made me feel so sad today that tomorrow I'll be seeing the last episode EVER. It's just so very strange and I still haven't clung on that it's ending.

Definitely Restless. There were so many underlying themes in that ep that became prevalent in later episodes

Restless is one of my favorite eps from the series so i gotta give it my vote. However, i do agree that The Freshman is underrated.
urbanlegend23
07-22-2003, 11:47 PM
Restless takes it away with 7-1!
LIVING CONDITIONS - Episode 2
Buffy's friends think she is crazy when she insists her annoying roommate is evil.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_2.jpg
vs.
PRIMEVAL - Episode 21
Adam causes war in the Initiative; Uber-Buffy is born!
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_21.jpg
I like both episodes, but Primeval is the better episode. Lots of action and amazing SFX, though I didn't like Adam's "plan", Uber-Buffy rocked!

Primeval.

Primeval. The ending is really cool. And I thought Living Conditions was a little too....weird
Pumpkinhead
07-23-2003, 03:20 PM
I like Living Conditions more than most people, but it was very anticlimactic. However, Primeval was equally anticlimactic. I mean, after half a season of build-up, Adam died in about two minutes. Anyway, Primeval is the better episode. It should have been a better, considering it was the "demise of the Big Bad" episode, but it was fun and action-packed, and it kicked a lot of ass seeing the Scoobies getting back to doing what they do best.

Primeval.
And as I was late I'm just gonna give my vote for the previous tournament even though it means nothing.

I'll end this one soon, so get your votes in...
I'm gonna go for Living conditions. I liked the wierd vibe this ep had.
Primeval was good in places but Adam just annoyed me, and the scene where riley ripped the chip out of his nervous system with his fingers required me to suspend my disbelief a little too far. That bit was just ludicrous
urbanlegend23
07-24-2003, 11:57 PM
Primeval wins 6-2.
THE HARSH LIGHT OF DAY - Episode 3
Spike is back in Sunnydale, and in search of the mysterious Gem of Amara.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_3.jpg
vs.
THE YOKO FACTOR - Episode 20
Adam finds a new way to split up Buffy and her pals - not with violent, but with words.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_20.jpg
I did like The Harsh Light of Day, but The Yoko Factor was an amazing episode I think. Very clever with some amazing scenes. One of the best of season four, a very underrated ep.

Damn. The Harsh Light of Day wins 4-3. A shame because I really wanted The Yoko Factor to take it away! Oh well, moving on...
FEAR, ITSELF - Episode 4
Gachnar, a fear demon, brings the gang face-to-face with their fears at a haunted house on Halloween.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_4.jpg
vs.
NEW MOON RISING - Episode 19
Oz cames back, apparently cured of the werewolf inside of him, to make up his relationship with Willow.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_19.jpg
This one is so hard for me. I love them both equally. I guess in the long run I find Fear, Itself more entertaining, though I do really love NMR.

Fear, Itself! I frigging love this episode. It's in my top 15. The best episodes of Buffy are (usually) the ones that blend several different genres. With its first 3/4 that could have been straight out of a horror movie and its sidesplitting ending, this episode is the perfect example of that.

07-28-2003, 01:28 AM
Fear, Itself in the lead!

New Moon Rising was good too, and very sad, but I perfer the funny one in this case.
urbanlegend23
07-29-2003, 12:15 AM
Fear, Itself wins 6-3!
BEER BAD - Episode 5
Buffy drowns her sorrows with alcohol, which turns her and a bunch of other guys into cavemen.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_5.jpg
vs.
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE - Episode 18
Buffy and Riley are stuck, fucking, in a house with poltergeists that feed on lust.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_18.jpg
Both episodes are TERRIBLE and some of the WORST Buffy ever. However, WTWTA is quite simply, one of the worst episodes ever of TELEVISION, not just Buffy. So my vote is most definitely for Beer Bad.

Where the Wild Things Are
Ah the AGONY of choice.
I'm going to go for Beer Bad. Where the wild things are had no point apart from being a cheap attempt to raise ratings by being controversial, and I just think it is sad a quality show like buffy felt the need to do that. Beer Bad was crap too, although some of the scenes were amusing all be it in a very childish way.
It is kinda ironic that buffy was so anti beer in season 4, where as in angel they were "celebrating the opening of a mailbox with a trip down to the pub" Now lets go treat me to a billy D.

WILD AT HEART - Episode 6
Oz and Willow break up when she finds him with female werewolf Veruca.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_6.jpg
vs.
SUPERSTAR - Episode 17
Buffy and her friends are in an alternate dimension where high-school nerd Jonathan is a superhero.

Superstar was an OK episode, but it doesn't come close to Wild At Heart, which was excellent!

THE INITIATIVE - Episode 7
Spike escapes from an underground lab, The Initiative, where a bunch of scientists do tests and examine demons.

vs.
WHO ARE YOU - Episode 16
Faith wrecks havoc in Buffy's life.

I agree. I wouldn't go as far as to say I hate Pangs, but it's not one of my favourite episodes. It's weird, I usually love Jane Espenson's writing, but every once in a while she writes an episode that's just too silly and ridiculous for my liking (First Date, Pangs, Doublemeat Palace).
Anyway, my vote is for This Year's Girl.
I like pangs but I'm gonna go for this years girl. Though who are you and TYG sum up the main problem for me with buffy S4, the other side of the franchise, angel (ie. 5 by 5 and sanctuary) was much stronger than it was at the time.

SOMETHING BLUE - Episode 9
Willow does a spell that goes awry and causes everything she says to come true - Buffy and Spike get engaged, Giles goes blind, and Xander becomes even more of a demon magnet.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_9.jpg
vs.
GOODBYE IOWA - Episode 14
The pills Maggie Walsh was feeding her soldiers start to take dangerous effect; new Frankenstein-like Big Bad Adam wrecks havoc in Sunnydale.

Buffy and Riley's relationship suffers from their dishonesty with each other, and the gang also has an apolcaypse to fight.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_11.jpg
vs.
A NEW MAN - Episode 12
Giles feels left out of the gang and has some drinks with Ethan Rayne who turns Giles into a demon.
http://home.attbi.com/%7Epulpdusk/images/4_12.jpg

A New Man. You know, when people discuss crappy episodes of Buffy, when it comes to season 4, people often mention Beer Bad, Where The Wild Things Are, and even Superstar (which I love) but no one ever acknowledges how crappy Doomed was. Maybe not everyone dislikes it as much as I did, but come on! That scene where Buffy dives down the pit after the demon! Give me a fucking break! Kind of weird that it sucked so much, considering it was written by three of Buffy's most talented writers.

I vote for Doomed. I dunno, a new man was good but the initiative annoyed my to the point I was cheering for ethan rayne and was annoyed they got him in the end. Fear, Itself. Nice to see that there are others who love it as much as I do.
On a side note, I noticed that pretty much all of the Initiative themed episodes were booted out last round, and now it looks like Primeval is going. I guess that shows how most people felt about that story arc.

Haven't seen the episodes yet(if you check the official Buffy topic I'm giving reviews from season 2 and on). But I'll say that I like the change you put in the plot for Where The Wild Things Are. In the first round it was just them screwing. But in the second round you decided to add the really hard for some reason.

Well your welcome. I saw the plot summary for Where The Wild Things Are for round 2 and I just thought that it seemed different.
Since my Buffy watch is on the beginning of season 3 I can't vote in this :(
Although I saw the second episode in season 3 in Buffy. What's the episodes name(the one with the zombies in Buffy's house)? I don't know it.

Buffy Question: I'm not a big Buffy fan, but I do like the show...and Sarah Michelle Gellar. I don't know the names of the episodes and I don't know shit really. Yesterday Buffy was on tv, old episode. It was about this guy that made all the girls fall in love with him. Dawn was the first, then Buffy and then Willow and Anya. It was a very fun episode, and I wanted to ask yo Buffy lovers ;) if you knew the name of this Episode and the season in which belongs. Thanks in advance. Again: I don't know shit about this series, so it may sound stupid to some of you.
