All I have to say is wow! I bought Platoon SE at Best Buy yesturday for 14.99 and got this movie for free. I had not seen it or heard much about it other than its rating and nature. I had no idea what I was getting into. Also I got the Unrated version. The sex portrayed here can not be found anywhere in US cinema except perhaps a Larry Clark film. However, this film did not feel cheap and sleazy like Clarks films. As erotic as the film was, I was still able to see the film for what it was and I loved it. Y tu is a great journey that not only shows the sexual nature of a friendship but how the bonds between friends are always strong. I found the ending to be sad and realised I lost a lot of the meaning in what Luisa's character said during the course of the movie. Perhaps I was blinded by all the sex but in the end I figured out some of the deeper and more hidden meanings. A great complex film.

10/10

Also, I was wondering if anyone found any striking similarities between Y Tu and Chasing Amy? The whole feel of the story and the outcome were almost identical. Just a though.

I didn't enjoy this movie so much. There was nothing really insightful or interesting that happened in this movie. If you're a guy, you pretty much know how the two male characters would act and think given the circumstances. I was expecting really explicit sex scenes and was disappointed.

Anyway, there must be something about this movie that it garnered all this praise and all. Maybe I missed out, maybe I didn't. I love the title, though. :D

7/10

I too liked this film. I haven't seen it since it was in the theater so I'm a little fuzzy in my memory of it. I want to see it again because i htink I , too, was a bit distracted by the sexuality.

Interesting point about Chasing Amy, Delfonics. The end does have that same feel. I think if they would have gone though with Holden's plan, there would have been the same outcome.

I would give the movie about a 7/10. Some of the dialogue I found entertaining, but the movie wasn't flawless. I think what bothered me the most about the movie was the annoying narration that chimed in and was totally not necessary. I understand the symbolism behind the narration, yada yada, but overall I felt it was banging me over the head and I wanted it to stop so I could hear the characters interact instead.

It was okay...I wasn't trying to find any meaning in it, because I just can't do that with those damn subtitles.
I'm not sure if I own the unrated version or not. I must not, because I didn't think the sex scenes were explicit at all, and there weren't that many of them. Did the two guys have sex? I couldn't figure that out, they didn't show anything on my DVD.

I thought that the movie was very good, different kinds of sex scenes IMO. I wasn't surprised by the ending of it, however. 8/10 - one of the better movies of 2K1

Firt of all... I don't know who you are calling kid.
Second of all... I am from Spain myself, and I can asure you that nor me nor anyone I know there considers him/herself latino. The term comes from latin-america = latino.

Hilarious film that really is a step above other teen comedies like AMERICAN PIE.

I was smiling all the way through this one that really depicts a much more intertesting dynmaic than its American counterparts ever depict honestly. Where the uS embraces low brow humour and innuendo to get immature giggles, this one delves deeper and finds humor within the context of its situation and cultural morality.

The script was IMO insightful and comedic while the score creates a real mood that allows the humour to come out even more. The cinematography is absolutely superb with a glorious use of colour.

Important to note that the Directors next film happens to be the next HARRY POTTER film.

I own and like the film...but what the fuck is with the incredibly intrusive narration?

It loses SERIOUS pointage for that alone.

Gael Garcia Bernal keeps me coming back for seconds though.

A lot of people seem to not like that narration. At first it felt very unconfortable listening to it but after a while I just started to accept it as part of the movie.

Loved it. It was funny, interesting, and had it's dramatic moments. The thing I loved the most, though, was how real the world felt. As someone from a latin country, I appreciated the portrayal of that type of detached relationship one has with all the violence and poverty going on around you. Struck really, really close to the reality of being a priviledged person in one of these shitty countries.

The director of this is doing Harry Potter 3, right? That should be interesting....

I was somehow disappointed by this movie. It was good, but i didn't find it as good as critics, who everywhere in the world were rating it as no less than a masterpiece... Well, i didn't see any masterpeiece here, but a good and entertaining tale, with not so much sex as it was said (Sex and Lucia has more, and it even doesn't have that much), and good performances. I also was a bit annoyed by the narration voice, it was somehow pointless and the movie would have worked as well without it. 7/10

PS: I'm spanish and i should have needed subtitles in some parts, cause it was fuckin' hard to understand the close mexican accent, even more if they talk as quick as they do! The same happened to me in the first 15 minutes of Amores Perros, but with this movie it was happenning all the time!

PS2: No, here in Spain we don't usually consider ourselves as "latins". We consider ourselves more like "mediterraneans". Closer to Italians than South-americans. Sometimes we can consider ourselves to be somehow latins, but generally this term is used to refer to southamericans and not spanish. That being said, we don't consider ourselves much like europeans yet. And we consider ourselves closer to latins than to anglosaxons.
Hope that helps in the discussion ;)

PS3: BTW, there are hotter actresses (and girls) here in Spain than Maribel Verdu, although she's a classic hottie (I've grown enjoying her nakes, i think there isn't a single movie in which she hasn't shown her boobs :D )

I loved this film, mainly for its realism.

Thats the main reason I enjoy foreign films, specially the ones from Mexico or Spain. They are a breath of fresh air in the special fx filled movie world we live in.

It feels like you are watching real life just unfold before your very eyes, the director just happened to be there. Or maybe its just good direction and acting.

Seriously though I love how these to "charolastras" were such good buddies, there was a real sense of friendship here. Maybe a little bit too much, but oh well. Even great friendships like this eventually come to an end.

Some of the best performances come from Gabriel Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna. They really act like kids their age might act, and specially as far their relationships go with their girlfriends, it all felt very real, lets face it, you have to have guts as an actor to make a movie like this! Not only that but make the scenes convincing and real. This was achieved to a very large extent.

I dont think this film was really about how "out there" the sex scenes were though. Ive heard some of you comment on that, it was more like the idea behind the sex scenes, betrayal, discovery, curiosity, mistake. Some people think foreign film and immediatly think "raunchy sex scenes", tho that is true with a lot of Foreign films, I dont think this was the case here.

This is a 7.5/10 movie. The characters feel real, and the sex scenes are surprisingly erotic and realistic, although the unnecessary narration and some boring scenes take it down a notch. Very good movie though

Speaking of the narration, whenever the movie would cease the sound to let the narration roll, I thought there was something wrong with my DVD player because you would hear no sound for about 2 or 3 seconds. I, too thought the narration bogged down the fludity of the movie (although it gave a lot of important facts of the sequence).

But despite all that, the movie gets a 9.5/10. There definitely was chemistry between Julio and Tenoch and you can feel it grow to be something more then a typical buddy friendship. As others have put it, the realism in the movie was definitely there and it felt like I was there along for the ride.

I just saw this film last week and have to say I liked it. Pretty realistic and you really get to know the characters from the narrative, the sex scenes were explicit, but not THAT explicit, the ending caught me off guard. If I'd known how it ended I would have listened to the dialogue more closely. It's basically a film about the bonds of friendship, and crossing over that friendship line. Three people who went on a journey together for very different reasons.

ps. I actually liked the narrative because it let you delve in the character's lives more deeply.
