View Full Version : What in God's name is everyone's problem with Army of Darkness: Bootleg Edition?
It seems that i can't go to a dvd-related site without hearing a long rant on how shitty this DVD is. Well, I got it for my birthday, and i have one question to ask: What is wrong with the disc? I could find nothing bad. Oh!, you say. What about the exclusion of the original ending? Big deal. The alternate one is almost as good, in my opinion(I love ash laughing insanely as the credits roll). Some people say the video quality is crap. They are obviously perfectionists who believe that every single movie should look flawless. Alright, I admit. It's not great. But unwatchable? It's better than VHS, by far, and that's enough for me. I've even heard one person say that the disc is short on extras. HELLO! Did you not notice the commentary, storyboards, art gallery, or deleted scenes w/commentary? The only thing missing, as i see it, is the trailer, and tons of discs don't have those.
Alright, that's all I got. Thanks for listening to my rant, and please post your thoughts on the disc.

HMMMMMM, that made me want to buy it.
Please do. I can't recommend this disc enough. From everything i mentioned to the packaging that makes the film look like an actual bootleg(don't worry, it's not), this disc is great. Also, the price is only 19.98, but I've spotted it at stores for under 15 bucks.

My problem with the "bootleg edition" isn't the audio/video quality; it's exactly the same as on the limited edition director's cut. My problem is BECAUSE of the limited edition director's cut.
Allow me to clarify. When Anchor Bay first released AoD Director's Cut on DVD, they only issued 50,000 copies in the US, and only 5,000 in Canada. Now then, I searched and hard on eBay for a copy that wasn't going to cost me an arm and a leg (just try looking for the even harder to find 2-disc set...we're taking $100+ sales here, people). Even when I found a relatively cheap copy, I ended up paying more than you would for your average DVD. And I've enjoyed it despite the somewhat hefty price tag. But then, some time later, I hear some lame "bootleg edition" is being released with the exact same audio/video quality and the same special features as the limited edition I shelled out some considerable bucks for. Not only that, but there's plenty of copies for everyone, and it's only $15.
Here's my problem: What's the point in releasing a "limited edition", a marketing move that makes an item special, if they're just going to give the same package to the public in as many copies as possible, and with crappy cover art to boot? That in my opinion cheapens the Limited Edition and makes my efforts to get my copy of it pretty much worthless. I might as well has have waited for this stupid bootleg edition. Coulda saved myself some cash. Oh well, at least I have the one with this cool cover artwork:

I own the bootleg edition. It's cool in my book. Great audio commentary,Terrific Storyboards, and nice deleted scenes. I got pissed off when Ash was fighting Evil Ash because it was too dark I could barely see. I also got really, really angry when the 2 disc edition got out of print. I do plan to buy the threatical version DVD and Evil Dead II:Special Edition.
