Among those also nominated were debut albums from Irish popsters The Thrills, rising rockers The Darkness, London indie outfit Athlete and new hip-hop star Dizzee Rascal.

The nominees were announced by Jools Holland at The Commonwealth Club in central London.

The full list of nominees - and current odds - are as follows:

10/1: Floetry 'Floetic'/Soweto Kinch 'Conversations With The Unseen'
12/1: Martina Topley-Bird 'Quixotic'/Eliza Carthy 'Angelicana'/Lemon Jelly 'Lost Horizons'

A panel of judges drawn from the music industry will initially choose their 12 albums of the year, before announcing the overall winner on 9 September.

The full list of previous winners is as follows:

1992 - Primal Scream 'Screamadelica'
1993 - Suede: 'Suede'
1994 - M People: 'Elegant Slumming'
1995 - Portishead: 'Dummy'
1996 - Pulp: 'Different Class' :)
1997 - Roni Size: 'New Forms'
1998 - Gomez: 'Bring It On'

So, any thoughts and opinions folks?

Give the award to talented young Dizzee Rascal or The Darkness I say!?

i have'nt heard all the albums but of the ones i have heard i would like, the thrills "so much for the city" to win it this year, but as i have disagreed with most of the past winners it will probably be something like radiohead or coldplay

Wash yer mouth out.

I'd say 50% were worthy winners...

Pulp (of course), Portishead, Badly Drawn Boy at least...but the folks responsible for giving M People the "prestigious accolade" are complete mentalists.

I can see Coldplay running away with it.

Pity.

Agreed on The Thrills though, they sound pretty rawking.

I know nothing about this award...but...

Radiohead deserves to win. If not, give it to Coldplay.

I'm not well informed at all :D

I really want to hear this Dizzee Rascal album. I've read a lot of good stuff and although my cynical mind detected hype i'm certainly intrigued. Mike Skinner of The Streets has been singing this guys praises and that's more than enough reason to check it out. I might buy this tomorrow (i've got a £10.00 Virgin voucher that's been begging to be used for a few weeks now...if I can just find the fucker).

Of the stuff I have heard...

Coldplay despite their many detractors (more than a few of whom frequent this board...you know who you are) are a brilliant band. I wasn't interested in Parachutes (bought it...gave it away) but 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' is chock full of magic moments.

Radiohead's 'Hail To The Thief' has yet to steal my heart. I do like it. I'm just looking for something more I guess. I'm one of those Radiohead fans whose favorite album is The Bends. Nothing they have done since has come close to even touching the coat tails of that masterpiece (and I like every album they have released since to some extent).

The Darkness debut is a lot of fun but it doesn't deserve to win the Mercury Prize.

The Thrills kinda bore me. I haven't heard the entire album yet but they chased me out of the tent and into the sunshine at T In The Park.

Athlete...booooooooooring.

Can't comment on any of the rest.

BCV...gotta agree with you on the M People win. That was a fucking travesty. I would rather eat a shit filled shoe than listen to those boring fuckstains. A number of years ago I had the misfortune of catching 20 minutes of their main stage headline set (headline set!!! I fucking ask you!?!?) at T In The Park after having witnessed a majestic headline set from The Boo Radleys in one of the tents. Talk about a come down. If I had only had a rifle with a sniper sight.

The ones that I agree heartily with are Primal Scream, Pulp, Badly Drawn Boy and the magnificent P J Harvey. Most of the rest I can accept with the exception of Roni Size, fuckin godawful Gomez and Talvin 'whodafuck' Singh.

Didn't the Gorrillaz (sp?) win it once, but not accept the prize, or something along those lines? I remember something like that happening...

Give it to Radiohead. Not only is there album the best, but they were ROBBED in 1997 and 2000.

I keep pretty quiet about my love for Radiohead, but they sincerely deserve to win it. If they never record another song I will never forget how much I fell in love with 'A Wolf At The Door' upon my first listen.

The term genius is over-used, hey, but that's what it is.

If not, give it to The Darkness; they are worthy of winning it just for taking the absolute piss out of the industry in the most comical fashion since someone handed a recording contract to William Shatner.

Go Coldplay go! I love Hail To The Thief, but "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" is one of the best albums I have heard in years. And it would be nice for us Coldplay fans to be able to rub it in a little to the "haters", especially on the boards. :D

Harumph. A Wings fan would want Coldplay to win.
