I'm not sure if I'm the guy people should be listening to for this (my taste in music runs mostly in the Top 40, Dance & House and Remix areas) but I listened to the album at my work today, and I loved everything I heard. I only got to song #6, and that was enough for me to purchase it. Haven't had a chance to listen to the rest of the album yet, but I would give it a thumbs up.

It is quite good from what I've heard on the radio preview. Dave Navarro's guitar licks are thick and juicy and that's the way I like them.

It's not as good as Ritual De Lo Habitual or Nothing's Shocking (not much is) but it's pretty fucking close. I didn't think it would come close. A very good album.
Here are a review...
From Amazon...
On Strays, the first Jane's Addiction studio album in 13 years, there's no mistaking Perry Farrell's trademark vocal sound (a nasal goose? a banshee in flight?) and Dave Navarro's ever-adaptable guitar style. But the band--only bassist Eric Avery is absent from their classic line up, replaced by Chris Chaney--hasn't come to party like its 1991. Sure, the balance of hedonism and earnestness, environmentalism and decadence, remains, but the quartet's approach is that of a unit ready to flex a few new muscles. Listeners will notice roof-raisers like "True Nature" and "Hypersonic" first, but some of the quieter tracks ("Price I Pay", with the classic Farrell rationalization "I always do the wrong thing, but I got a good reason," "To Match the Sun") are among the most effective Jane's mood pieces ever. Strays is certainly a much more apt return than 1997's odds-and-sods compilation Kettle Whistle. --Rickey Wright

I got it the other day, and I`m happy to announce that IT`S GOOD!! In fact, it`s REALLY damn good! I would indeed say this is just as good as their old stuff.......maybe even better.
They don`t sound exactly like they used to, the band is tighter now and also HEAVIER. Every single song is great, the songwriting has progressed big-time since the "Ritual de lo Habitual" days.

Rolling Stone gave it a rave review, I think I'll have to grab it when I have some extra cash.

Just curious dude, have you heard the whole album or just the single "Just Because"?

I know you weren't asking me...but...
I love the entire album including Just Because. I'm a Jane's Addiction fan from way back when. I got into them via Nothing's Shocking and they became my favorite band at the time of the release of Ritual De Lo Habitual. Then they split.
When I heard they were gonna record together again I was pretty damn happy...with reservations. I didn't want them to tarnish the sacred image by releasing a mediocre album. I had slavishly maintained my love of the band over the years by listening to both of their classics as frequently as my constant influx of new music would allow.
So it was with mucho trepidation that I settled down to listen to Strays for the first time. I was blown away. Instantly. Like I stated in my previous post on this thread, it's not quite as good as Nothing's Shocking or Ritual De Lo Habitual. But it's so fucking close that there's a fly's ball hair of a distance between the three albums in terms of sheer quality. I'm very happy to have them back and hope that they get their asses back in the studio again and record another bunch of classics.

Yeah that was pretty much my reaction as well.
I love the first song "True Nature" the most.
It`s much better than I expected it to be. I thought, at best, it would be as good as a Porno For Pyros release.

In my opinon this album is definitely on par with those other great Jane's classics "Nothing Shocking" & "Ritual De Lo Habitual". When I fist heard "Just Because" I was impressed, it was catchy & it rocked - just like classic Jane' s & unlike most of the other new songs on Alt Radio.
I have to say my favourite song on the album are "Price I Pay" and "Everybody's Friend." They just feel so epic, often reminescient of Led Zeppelin. I really hope the latter becomes a single, I think it will really catch on. I think Perry Farrell shows alot more verstality as a vocalist on this album & Dave Navarro really comes through with many impressive solos and riffs.
Other really stellar tracks are the kick-ass opener "True Nature", "Strays', "Superhero", "Wrong Girl", & "Hypersonic."
So far I'd say that this is the 3rd best album of 2003 behind The White Stripes' "Elephant" & Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief."
