Well as my week of watching asian cinema goodness continues I found myself stumbling upon Battle Royale for the first time... and fuck yeah, was I pleased with what I saw. I was expecting a good movie but not the majestic, epic, multilayered bloody good fun of a movie I just finished watching a few minutes ago. This movie was brilliant, well shot, and the storyline stepped up to the plate and scored.

The way this film takes kids relationships and magnifies them to outrageous preportions by throwing them into an extreme situation just makes the movie. Friends turning on each other, refusing to fight, Small quabbles over boyfriends turn into people losing their lives. This movie is like lord of the flies on steriods and with a full armory. I highly reccomend you schmoes checking this movie out if you can. There are region free editions available for the American Schmoes who are interested, that's how much to my joy I got to see it. Just peruse the net and I'm sure you'll find a copy.

I adore this outrageous, bizarre, yet strange film. It's packed with bloody action and gore mixed with a perfectly done storyline; the cinematography is beautiful and the actors really all did excellent jobs in their roles, I really felt for several of them. Definitely worth a look. 9/10

Great movie! I actually went overboard and bought the 50 dollar OOP Tin. However I then traded it for 3 movies :). The story is great and behind all the mayhem and sappy love drama's there is a real social commentary. One of my favorite foreign films. I cant wait until the sequel.

8/10

Top movie...the scene with the mass bitch fight over the poisoned pasta brings tears to my eyes. Fucking GENIUS.

I'm slightly bitter about the fact that I bought the SE version in a tin with a FRAME and everything...I run home, nearly pissing my pants due to sheer excitement, open the tin...and find my frame is the fucking CREDITS!!!

Bugger.

Oh yeah...and I have to mention the best line in the flick...

"I said no whispering" :)

8.5/10

I'm looking forward to BR2. I'm pleased Riki Takeuchi- the trenchcoat wearing nutcase in the miike films dead or alive, fudoh etc etc. is the bad guy in it. He is suitably fuckin hard.

Ah the one on midnighteye.com said it was all right. I don't know all the negative reviews seem to be coming from aicn, a site that is often either a lot more positive or negative about films than need be. The trailer is cool as fuck so I'm living in hope here. Maybe I'm just deluded.

I love Battle Royale. The scene with the pasta is brilliant like BCV pointed out. It packed so many emotions in that scene.

Yeh, that was my favorite scene too..~!!!

Its been a while, but I rememeber being torn about trying to find a place for each of the characters in my tiny, gore lovin heart.. I really think it could've been longer; many of mainplayers weren't fleshed out past A) Their 'look' and B) Their various grudges. I thought the film suffered as a result.

Ahh, either way, its a neat idea.

Did my eyes decieve me or did I just see that psycho girl from BR swing a mace at uma thurman in the kill bill trailer?

That looks cool as fuck.

I liked it a lot. After a strong beginning it got a bit repetitive on the 2nd act, but the final 30 minutes were great.

8/10.

I swear thats her too. I know Tarintino is a big BR fan so it very well could be her.

I can't find it anywhere to rent...is it worth a blind buy?

I am a (beginning) Takashi Miike fan, if that's any help.

In case your curious the mace swinging girl Go Go Yubari from Kill Bill is the girl who played Chigusa from Battle Royale. Remember the girl who stabbed the buy in his family jewels until he died(all the guys wil remember that one :D)?

The bizarre coincidence: Uma is wearing a tracksuit that is somewhat similar to Bruce Lee's jumpsuit as well as Chigusa's.

Yes Yes Yes. It's brilliant. In fact I'd say it's the best film Kitano has been involved in, which is saying something 'cos he's been in some really good movies. Actually I think BR is the best film of the 2000s so far. 10/10.

I liked the way "mace swinging girl Go Go Yubari" died. A nice homage to a scene in BR I thought.
