Report: Filmmakers changed character's name from Scott Peterson

Wednesday, July 23, 2003

(07-23) 10:21 PDT MODESTO, Calif. (AP) --

Makers of the new Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" reportedly changed a character's name from Scott Peterson to Scott Mason because of the notoriety surrounding the Modesto man charged with killing his wife and unborn son.

"Due to the name's similarity to Scott Peterson and the plot of his fiancee's kidnapping, the character's name was changed," according to the Internet Movie Database's Web site.

While the character's name was changed in the film, the credits, the official Web site and several fan Web sites still list the character as Scott Peterson.

The "T3" character is engaged to a woman who is kidnapped. Scott Peterson's wife, Laci, was reported missing Christmas Eve and found dead months later.

"T3" representatives were promoting the film in Europe and could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

In an interview on a British Web site, actor Mark Famiglietti, who plays Mason in "T3," said they finished shooting the film in late August, four months before Laci Peterson was reported missing.

That's so stupid, i didn't even remember his name, but now that they have to go to this extent, it will actually catch peoples attention. How stupid.

The change doesn't affect the film at all. The Detective says "Mason." Only people who study the credits will notice.

So do they have to re-send new copies of T3 out with that change in the credits?

I'm sure this is something that was changed before the film was first release, not something that's being changed midstream.

Probably. New Line Cinema did it to attach the teaser preview to the end of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and Fox Searchlight is now doing it to showcase 28 Days Later's alternate ending.

And I think is a good choice for the WB. It was only a matter of time before someone starts making a big deal out of it, but now the WB has fixed the problem, and will come off as caring and concerned about the situation, which is good PR for the company.

I'm pretty sure the credits were changed before the movie was released. The Petersen scandal happened many months before Terminator 3 came out.

This reminds me of the deal between Wag the Dog and the political happenings at the time, if anyone remembers back that far

He's still listed as "Scott Peterson" in the credits.

In addition to T3, I'm hoping that Scott Petersen will also be removed from American society quite soon.
