Terrible, terrible news. A great director lost. RIP. :(
Note: a more complete story will probably be up soon.
From CBC.ca (http://www.cbc.ca) :
Director John Schlesinger dead at 77
LOS ANGELES - Film director John Schlesinger died early Friday, a hospital spokesperson said. Schlesinger was 77.
Media had reported that the Oscar-winning director of Midnight Cowboy, Marathon Man, and Sunday Bloody Sunday was taken off life-support at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs on Thursday.
The British-born filmmaker suffered a debilitating stroke in December 2000. His condition had been deteriorating significantly in recent weeks.

I was about to post the same thing...
I've loved John Schlesinger's work ever since I first saw "Billy Liar" (not an easy novel to film) and "Far From the Madding Crowd". ("Midnight Cowboy" and "Marathon Man" just brought him to the major film-going public's attention.)
RIP, Mr. Schlesinger. You've left behind a lot of people who will always appreciate your work.

I had just watched Midnight Cowboy the other night, and I loved it. Marathon Man was his only other film I had seen...that was a good one too.
RIP.

I just watched Far From The Madding Crowd again a few months ago. One of the best looking films you'll ever see. And I concurr with everyone about Midnight Cowboy. That was a bold step forward.

Too RIGHT about Billy Liar.
I adore that film. He may have been a Londoner through and through, but he empathised with "The North"..and we all saw it.
Billy struck a chord...and Far From The Madding Crowd was a sight to behold.
With Midnight Cowboy, Mr. Schlesinger truly stepped into the light!
I own many of him films and I truly believe him to be a GEM.
R.I.P good man.

MIDNIGHT COWBOY, BILLY LIAR, MARATHON MAN & THE FALCON & THE SNOWMAN are but a few cinematic gems that this fine Director contributed to the history of celluloid.
A sad day indeed, I think Im gunna have a little mini marathon tonite of Schlesinger greats in tribute to the man.
R.I.P John Sclesinger, you will be missed.

God, what an awful year for cinema. Several legends have kicked the bucket lately.
Gregory Peck, Robert Stack, Katharine Hepburn, John Schlesinger.
Buddy Ebsen too, though he was more of a TV legend.
