now i had heard about all the hype surrounding this movie so i rented it out and well! It really wasnt that good. The first half an hour was terrible a retard in the car that was even scary and some wheelchair man moaning to himself which made me feel embrassed for the poor fat actor. Now when the bloke wid the saw starts killin people its all right, but no gore hardly! No canniblism just sucking of fingers by awful fake looking old people dummies and a end scene where some1 gets run over, in a dissapointing ending, now i can c how at the time this was awesome but i really did think it was poor when i watched it 2 weeks ago.

Hmmm, Well it seemed a tad overrated to me at times, but after a couple of viewings I started to like it. And by the way, where are all these new schmoes coming from.....?
I also have the feeling that this thread should be somewhere else than in General Horror....

Please put spoiler warnings, some people still haven't seen this.
I enjoyed the movie - excellent. Very powerful film.
And yes, I have noticed an increase of newbie schmoes lately =)
Not that that is bad, but an observation.

I thought the movie was better after 3 or 4 viewings. Older prints are pretty dark which take away from the movie. But to each their own I won't shoot "Tha Messenger" for saying the movie wasn't really that good.

I agree that the movie is a bit overrated. The first half of the movie was dull. I kept forwarding to the parts that showed Leatherface; the rest was boring. It got interesting in the last 20 minutes of the movie. I think the remake will be more serious, have more scares and gore than the original!

I think TCM is one of the scariest films out there, and you know what? I JUST realized it last week! It must have been my 6th or 7th time seeing it, but it scared the buhjeezus outta me! It has quickly climbed to the top of my list of scariest films ever made.
Moving to PAST HORROR...

I cant say anything negative about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The opeing credits just suck you in and creep you out...from there it ranges from Disturbed to a tad long winded but I dont mind that sometimes. Its been said before but the fact that the movie "smells" like death helps the cause. I can see people not liking it for the fact that it does get slow, and like Dandridge said, the older prints are very dark...the big chase scene in the woods can be a tad trying when the screen is so dark...but the ending more than makes up for that for me.
Classic movie...10/10

For the longest time I wasn't a really big horror fan until a few years ago when my ex introduced me to my favorite genre. One of the first films that I saw was TCM and even back then I enjoyed it very much.
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR TCM*

Some people tend to comment on how certains scenes are too dark as well as the footage not being in the best quality but what everyone needs to remember is that this movie was made how many years ago? How has technology changed in the time between 1974 I beleive and 2003? Thats a pretty big gap as far as the tech. stuff is concerned.
I can see how some would think that the movie slows down a bit but I feel that it helps to build up the suspense for the next "dramatic" scene. For example when the kids are jes' riding along in the van and pick up the hitchhicker. Yes it is a bit slow but does it not keep your interest? It sure as hell held my attention as I knew that this guy was going to have something to do with what eventually happens to these kids.
IMO this is a classic. There isn't much gore in it and that is what I think is the key factor into why this film is soo loved by many. It didn't have to show you the blood, it merely showed a few images and let your brain due the work. Ex. When whats her face (can't remember her name as I haven't seen this movie in a long time) is in the house and Leatherface has her carrying her back into what I like to call the meat room. The camera shows you the hook then shows her getting stuck on it. Sure it isn't close up and in graphic detail but it was enough to give you the idea of what was happening.
*END SPOILERS*
I like movies like these. Don't get me wrong I enjoy watching the blood and gore and very graphic movies like many others but I also enjoy the fact that given a few images the brain sets to work making up what it would look like or the scenerio in some cases. Then again.......thats jes' me.

Yeah, see with this movie, you can't really be looking for gore, because that's not what's supposed to be frightening. The scares are mostly in two parts:
1-The cannibalistic and insane family.
2-The torture of, not only Sally, but anyone else they see as fresh meat(Such as Pam and Jeff, Pam of course getting the hook...)
The torture of Sally, to me, was extremely hard to watch. I felt like I was right there and I couldn't do anything to help her. The acting is REALLY good in this movie. Some people who are really ignorant will yell at the screen and say "Just bite him!" at one of the parts where the hitchhiker puts his fingers by his mouth. See, they aren't putting themselves in her place. See if Sally had bitten the hitchhiker, she would have gotten killed right then and there for pissing the HitchHiker off! She is completely helpless. I thought for a second I was going to go crazy and by the end I forgot I was breathing and I had to make sure I was(I was...I wasn't that scared, just in a trance-like phase) and I was like "Woah....". I guess I have a little 70's in me because this movie really terrified me!

Exactly. This movie may seem dated to some people, but so does Halloween, and you don't hear people knocking that, now do you? Personally, I feel that the sequels dulled the original's 'blade', but the same could be said for Silence Of The Lambs. Meh, who cares, the saw is family, and so is this movie.

Now see, this is what pisses me off about theatres or groups of people watching these movies. They never take it seriously from the get-go, looking for a more wild time, and can end up ruining the whole thing. This sort of thing really gets to me for some reason.
