Yes he was.
Maybe not.
Who knows?
It's been asked before.

There's a little bit of study and speculation on the subject.

Huh? Does the fact that he's mentioned in a documentary about allegedly homosexual movie stars prove anything? He was one of the biggest womanizers in Hollywood during his lifetime and married no less than five(!) times. If he really had been gay, why would he have chosen such an "agonising" lifestyle? :p

No it doesn't proove anything. There are three links posted. Two of them are about suspected gays in Hollywood. One of them mentions the SUSPECTED bi-sexual life of Cary Grant. He was married on and off again and had a child, BTW.

The third article is about the same question that chasingbanky originally asked.

I really don't care either way, but if someone really wants to know, then maybe the answers - or more questions - lie in those documentaries. I have no idea.

Hey, calm down! Remember, this is the Celeb Talk/Gossip forum and it wouldn't even exist without threads like this one. And to answer your question: it doesn't change anything, but that does NOT mean that chasingbanky is not allowed to ask if he/she wants to know.

Of course. I apologize for the outburst what I meant to say was: I think that they're trying to throw a post-humous scandal on Cary Grant.

I feel that it doesn't matter one way or another that he's gay or bi-sexual or loved farm animals. I think he was a great actor.
Well, here's the short report from the second link that I posted in case no one wanted to click on it and read it.

qouted from http://www.zoe73.net/people/cg_gay.htm

But Cary Grant was gay? Wasn't he?

Whenever I mention that I am a Cary Grant fan people say "but wasn't he gay?". The majority of people who ask this believe they are the first person to tell me as if I hadn't heard it before, and usually think that by telling me this I will suddenly stop being a Cary Grant fan. The poor misguided souls. However, they have made me put up this page because I'm bored of answering this same question!

Of course, I'd love to be able to give a flippant answer to the "but wasn't he gay" crowd....something along the lines of "Yes, he was a very happy man", but I don't think that would be very respectful to Cary's memory.

Rumours about Cary Grant's sexuality are generally based around his long standing friendship with fellow actor, Randolph Scott and the fact that they shared homes on and off for many years. Does that mean that if I have shared a house with friends of the same sex I am gay too? Because I have and I'm straight, and I'm sure I'm not the exception to the rule.

The rumours are further substantiated, supposedly, because he had so many gay friends. Does that mean if I have gay friends I am gay too? Because I do and I'm straight, and I'm sure I'm not the exception to that rule either!

I believe rumours about Cary's sexuality will continue for as long as people want to watch Cary's movies...so that's going to be forever! I think we need to look to Cary himself to provide us with the answer and believe what he says. It seems that he was very honest about other things in his life, so why not this?

When asked what he thought about unauthorised biographies, Cary Grant once said:

"They all repeat rumours that I am a tightwad and a homosexual, now I don't believe either of these is an insult, but it just isn't true.".

I, personally, choose to listen to Cary Grant and therefore don't believe he was gay. The main point that I'd like to make, though, is that it really doesn't matter to me. I don't see homosexuality and bisexuality as 'bad', 'unnatural', 'immoral', 'deviant' or as the 'result' of events in childhood.

If you think you can offend me, stop me being a fan or whatever it is you are aiming to do by telling me Cary Grant was gay, you'd be wrong - because Cary Grant's sexuality doesn't matter to me.

If you are just telling me because you think it's new information? Well you're wrong there too, sorry. Almost every Cary Grant fan, however small or great their fandom, knows the rumours and has made up their own mind.

If you are at this page to find out if Cary Grant was gay, I can't help. But why are you trying to find out if he was gay? Why on earth does it matter?

As a fan of Cary Grant it is his movies that I'm interested in, not his sexuality. His personal life is interesting, sure, because if you are a fan of someone you want to know a bit about them - but it's his movies that made me a fan, and it's his movies that I'll still be watching in years to come.

I agree completely KC. I agree totally. I'll choose to listen to Cary on this one. And I was not aiming that little outburst at you.

No sweat, dude.

Everyone is bound to get a little passionate now and then, right?

I actually agree with you, Michael_Myers. Seems like some desperate journalists and filmmakers can't think of anything better than cashing in on some stupid rumour. There's a short review of the book Kc linked which pretty much sums up the whole dilemma:
* out of ***** Please grow up.
The most offensive thing about this book is to state that Cary Grant was gay or even bi. I have gay friends that were bothered by it because it makes gays look desparate to be accepted. Cary Grant was an incredible man who cared much for the world. Him being gay would not be offensive but lying about him to make money is offensive to anyone, gay or not. I'm sure most men, gay or not would agree. I at least hope so.

Does it really matter? He was a good actor, shouldn't that be all that counts?

Yeah. Personally I don't care if he was or not, as long as he was a talented actor (which he was), and he does not look at all like a gay person.

Sorry Hannibal, but that's a completely idiotic statement.

Granted Cary (Ooh, a pun) wasn't mincing about in a tiara and leather chaps...but that doesn't mean he wasn't y'know...*nudge, nudge*, a little bit "oopsadaisy".

Did Oscar Wilde have "GAY BOY" stamped all over his prose-loving bee-hind?

Does Sir Ian McKellen reek of Barry Manilow records and KY?

What about these lads? You'll be telling me next that you knew all along...

A likely story.

PS: I jest, but I do believe your statement is nonsense.

Rock Hudson was married to a woman, and it was later discovered that he was gay.

for allof the people who are saying- who cares if he was gay or not- it almost seems like you are insinuating that anyone who asks the question is homophobic or a gay basher. It is totally common for people to speculate on the sex lives of celebrities. My grandmother used to buy the gossip magazines back in the 40's or 50's so it's been going on for ever. if celebrities don't want to be taked about they should not go int' show business. It goes with the territory. Grant lived a very blessed life and is well respected gay or straight. His former wife, Dyan Cannon has been aksed about this question in interviews and she refused to answer it. they had a daughter together and she said that she would always care for him.

This won't contribute much, but a lot of times I hear people say that Cary Grant was gay, but almost all the time it turns out they're mixing him up with Rock Hudson.
