1.) The Man on The Train (L'Homme du Train) -9/10
2.) May -8.5/10
3.) The Good Thief -8/10
4.) Identity -8/10
5.) 28 Days Later -8/10
6.) Bend It Like Beckham -8/10
7.) Spun -8/10
8.) Open Range -8/10
9.) DareDevil -8/10
10.) Phone Booth -7/10
I expect Kill Bill (1 and 2), Masked & Anonymous, City of God, All The Real Girls, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Mystic River, Jersey Girl, and perhaps Better Luck Tomorrow and Intolerable Cruetly will be on my top 10, though you never can tell. Once Upon A Time in Mexico, Dirty Pretty Things, Wonderland, and Whale Rider all probably have good chances too. And I expect to either love or hate Gerry and Ken Park, if it's love, they might be up. But I could be dissapointed with one I expect to love, all could live up to my expectations, or a movie I haven't even heard of could blow me away, suprise is part of the good in moviegoing, in 6 months we'll see. I expect The Man on The Train to be the only film on my top 10 now still on my top 10 at the end of the year, the first 7 months of the year have sucked.

It's a good thing that all of the good movies usually come out in the last 3 months of the year, because this year has flat-out SUCKED so far. I've seen 20 movies that are 2003 releases, and I only consider 6 of them to be good, only 1 of which I was enthusiastic about. Anyway, I've looked at information on every upcoming release for 2003, and it looks like it may get better. I can only hope it does.

Fuck word of mouth, I don't care what early audiences or critics are saying. Bob Dylan is my favorite person, period. And even without him, this flick would have the best cast of the year and a real interesting premise. The trailer is great too. This and Kill Bill are the flicks I'm most anticipating this year and I expect to adore them both.

Hopefully the rest of the year will yield better movies. First half has been damn near dismal.
I'm eagerly looking forward to (and expect to include in my year-ending list) INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, the new romantic comedy by the Coen brothers, ANYTHING ELSE, Woody Allen's new picture, KILL BILL, the long-awaited epic by Quentin Tarantino, AMERICAN SPLENDOR, the winner of the Grand Jury prize at Sundance, NORTHFORK, which, unfortunately, I'll have to catch on video.
Otherwise, 2003 seems like mostly an off year for the American cinema, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few late-release foreign flicks make my top ten, considering the stuff we're putting out.

Quite frankly I've been very disappointed with the quality this year folks. Major let downs all around. Now I base movies on a few things, obviously quality counts, but when you what you're getting (things will turn around, it's only August & we still got LOTR, Kill Bill, The Coens) and it still is a let down, ah Hell, here's my mid year report card. These aren't the oscars, based on my enjoyment.
1. The Matrix Reloaded: Didn't think the 1st was all that, but the Burly Brawl & The Highway Chase easily make it #1.
2. Seabiscuit: Good but not great, trend of the summer.
3. Identity: Unexpected, didn't see it coming, pleasant surprise.
4. Old School: Will Ferrel -- comic genius
5. Finding Nemo: probably best movie of the year at this point.
6. Bad Boys II: best $5 (matinee) I spent all season, didn't expect much & had me hootin & hollarin all movie long.
7. X2: Better than the first, but a major disappointment, thought it would be the shizzy, was good not great, theme of the summer.
8. The Hulk: Visually I loved the comic book feel and the attempts to make a serious movie, biggest dissappointment of the summer.
9. T3: Once again -- Good, but no Cameron
10: Charlie's Angels:Full Throttle: 1 Kick ass scene and lots of eye candy make this typical summer fodder.
