Doomed to Cuts
I have had a couple of emails hoping that an up and coming DVD release of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom might be uncut. Unfortunately Paramount have in fact submitted the old cut versions missing 1:06s, so this release will hardly be a collectors edition.

That sucks. I was hoping they might see sense (particularly as, on a new format, BBFC rules DO allow for a higher certificate and the disc could have easily been rated 12). I hope the US discs are from uncut prints.

I'm not sure that the PG (UK) and PG13 (US) versions are the same, certainly I can see our version attracting a PG13 from MPAA but as I said I'm hoping the cuts are only applicable to UK prints, I'll let you guys know on this as soon as I do.

It is to be noted that the dvd print is the sam one as has been available here on VHS all these years, these 66 seconds are NOT extra cuts.

Thanks :) I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what it is in November

I think the BBFC's policy only allows for a higher classification for home viewing than was given for the theatrical release, and the DVD release has to fall in line with the previously rated VHS.

From their website:
iii. Classification decisions may be stricter on video than on film. This is because of the increased possibility of under-age viewing recognised in the Video Recordings Act, and of works being replayed or viewed out of context. Accordingly, a work may receive a higher age classification on video, or require heavier cuts.

Reply from the BBFC to an email, posted on another forum:

Paramount have already said they will be releasing the cut 'PG' version. Current BBFC policy would not allow the release of an uncut '12' rated version. Removing the existing 'PG' version from the shelves is not a realistic possibility given the widespread (and still current) distribution of the film on VHS, not to mention TV.

If I buy the set it'll definitely be R1, which will almost certainly be uncut. Everyone in the UK should own a region-free DVD player.

Am I the only person who though Temple Of Doom was crap?

Raiders and Last Crusade were great though.

I agree, I think Raiders and Crusade are superb; though Temple is good in its own way- I wouldn't say it was crap. Its not as good as the other two, but its better than other films similar to it.

Who in God's name is running the BBFC these days!? They bring unsuitable movies down to 12 f'in A and cut miner things out of PG movies. I'll still be buying the R2 DVD set though(I don't have a region free player).
