View Full Version : The Birthday Thread!!!

OK, I want to try this one more time. I notice that more than one of the Schmoes, including myself, like to post those Best of Birthday Boy threads when on a celebrity's birthday, so I thought it would be kind of fun to have one big Birthday Thread that can be updated every day. I tried it once but it didn't work, so this is my last attempt.
I'll try to update it every day, but if I can't anyone else can feel free to...
Today, August 2, is the birthday of...
Edward Furlong (26)
Kevin Smith (33)
Peter O'Toole (71)
Wes Craven (64)

Here are my lists...
Top Five Kevin Smith Movies
1) Clerks (8.5/10)
2) Chasing Amy (8/10)
3) Dogma (8/10)
4) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (8/10)
5) Mallrats (6/10)
Top Five Wes Craven Movies
1) A Nightmare On Elm Street (8/10)
2) Scream (8/10)
3) New Nightmare (7.5/10)
4) Scream 3 (7/10)
5) A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (7/10)
Edward Furlong Performances
1) Danny Vinyard in American History X
2) John Connor in T2: Judgment Day
Peter O'Toole Performances
1) Henry II in The Lion in Winter
2) Bishop Cauchon in Joan of Arc (miniseries)
Embarassingly, I've only seen two performances each from each of the two actors. :( Even though Furlong was better in AMH, he'll always be John Connor to me.
The hilarious An Evening With Kevin Smith (8/10) would be #3 in the Kevin Smith list if I ranked it amongst his films.
Wes Craven didn't direct Dream Warriors, but he was one of the writers. I've enjoyed every Craven horror movie that I've seen so far, and the Elm Street series is always excellent when he is involved.
So what are your lists?

Ironically Colin, TCM is having a Peter O'Toole day tomorrow, showing Lawrence of Arabia, The Last Emperor, The Lion in Winter, My Favorite Year, and Goodbye Mr. Chips among other movies. He was Oscar-nominated for all of them except The Last Emperor, and the first two won Best Picture in their respective years. I'm watching it all day to catch up Peter's movies. I've only seen The Lion in Winter, myself.

Yeah, but I've already got my hands full with all the James Stewart movies I taped yesterday and the Clint Eastwood movies I taped today.
I might tape Goodbye Mr. Chips and The Last Emperor, though. I've already got Lawrence of Arabia coming to be soon from Netflix...
This is a great idea.. I'll make sure to visit this topic every day to add my lists

I haven't seen enough of Wesley Addy to make a list, but for Frank Vincent, my list would be the exact same as Quentin's, in the exact same order.
I had a bit of a Billy Bob-a-thon today in honor of his birthday. His great, Oscar-nominated (well deserved) performance in A Simple Plan would be my #3 (about Bandits) and Primary Colors would be my #6 (above Dead Man).

I'm not sure if we're doing deceased stars, but since today is a little slow for big names I thought we could. Were he still alive today, the late, great John Huston would be 97. Oscar-winning cinematographer and frequent Scorsese collaborator Michael Ballhaus turns 68 today. Top Bollywood star, talented actress, and beauty Kajol celebrates her 28th birthday today. Enter The Dragon fans and b-movie afficianados can rejoice, for John Saxon is 68 today as well. And this one's for AJ, Bob Clark, best-known for directing A Christmas Story and the Porky's films, turns 62.

I have seen little of Whitney Houston, and that's the way I like it. I've only seen Audrey Tautou in Amelie so far, but I loved her. She absolutely deserved a Oscar nomination for her wonderful performance, and the movie should have won Best Foreign Film despite some excellent competition. I am looking very much forward to seeing Audrey in He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not and I've put all the films of hers that I could in my Netflix queue.

Ahhh yes! I am a HUGE fan of the limp lump of a man. Surprised you didn't nominate a A Bit Of Fry and Laurie, missy!
Anyway, here's some Fryed quotes...
"Personally, I would rather consume my own faeces than vote for George W. Bush."
"I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers."
-- (from A Bit of Fry and Laurie)
"I don't watch television, I think it destroys the art of talking about oneself."
"I'm afraid I was very much the traditionalist. I went down on one knee and dictated a proposal which my secretary faxed over straight away."
"Estate agents. You can't live with them, you can't live with them. The first sign of these nasty purulent sores appeared round about 1894. With their jangling keys, nasty suits, revolting beards, moustaches and tinted spectacles, estate agents roam the land causing perturbation and despair. If you try and kill them, you're put in prison: if you try and talk to them, you vomit. There's only one thing worse than an estate agent but at least that can be safely lanced, drained and surgically dressed. Estate agents. Love them or loathe them, you'd be mad not to loathe them."

Wahey...a fellow Fry lover.
That last quote is an absolute pearler.
He was the perfect candidate to play Oscar Wilde...dashing, witty, unconventionally attractive, exceptionally intelligent...and gayer than a Sunday teatime.
Fry & Laurie would have DEFINITELY made the list...but I didn't feel right in including a sketch show if you see where I'm coming from.
Anyway, Geburtstag greetings Stephen.

http://www.cmgww.com/stars/bergman/images/photos/beri001.jpg
Yep, today marks the anniversary of Ingrid Bergman's birth and death at age 67. How horrible is that to die on your birthday?

1. Notorious (1946)
2. Casablanca (1942)
3. Gaslight (1944)
4. For Whom The Bell Tolls (1943)
5. Spellbound (1945)
6. Anastasia (1956)

First film I saw her in was The Natural. First film I saw a lot more of her in was Nine 1/2 Weeks. She was in the best Batman (1989) and for me, was best in L.A. Confidential. She's also been attached to some average stuff, like No Mercy, Blind Date, and rather large flop, Prêt-à-Porter.
Life doesn't stop at 50, though, as the following projects prove...
Door in the Floor (2003) (completed)
Cellular (2004) (post-production)
Elvis Has Left The Building (2004) (post-production)
Aurora Island (2004) (in production)
Another notable December 8th birthday, is the late, great Sam Kinison, who also would have been 50 today, had he not died so ironically, by a drunk-driver. Apart from his stand-up, music videos, and TV appearances, I'll also remember him as the only funny thing to come out of Back To School. RIP Sam!
"Jesus had a tough life. I read about that guy. Jesus is the only guy that ever came back from the dead that didn't scare the F--- out of everybody!"

Okay, today (May 10th), is the birthday of Richard Patrick, lead singer of Filter. Yes, I know, he's not an actor but he is the brother of everyone's favorite Terminator, Robert Patrick, so I figured 'hey, why not?' Plus, he's had songs on movie soundtracks, like "The Only Way (Is The Wrong Way)" which was on the Anger Management OST; "The Best Things" on The Crow: Salvation OST; "Trip Like I Do" on the Spawn OST; "Jurassitol" on The Crow: City of Angels OST; and "Hey Man, Nice Shot" on The Cable Guy OST. Plus, "Welcome to the Fold" is used during the opening credits of 3000 Miles to Graceland.
Happy birthday Richard Patrick! :)

I know it's just a little late, but I would still like to wish a Happy 30th Birthday to Kate Winslet, one of the best actresses of her generation.
BEST KATE WINSLET PERFORMANCES:
1. Clementine Kruczynski in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
2. Juliet Hulme in HEAVENLY CREATURES
3. Marianne Dashwood in SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
4. Sue Bridehead in JUDE
5. Young Iris Murdoch in IRIS
6. Sylvia Llewelyn Davies in FINDING NEVERLAND
7. Rose Dewitt Bukater in TITANIC
8. Madeleine 'Maddy' LeClerc in QUILLS
9. Ophelia in HAMLET
10. Julia in HIDEOUS KINKY
Her work in 1,3,4,5, & 7 were deservedly nominated for Oscars, but she also should've gotten a nom for Heavenly Creatures, a perfectly creepy, unforgettable performance.
Hannibal21
10-06-2005, 05:29 AM
Today it's Elisabeth Shue (42)
BEST ELISABETH SHUE PERFORMANCES:
1. Sera in LEAVING LAS VEGAS
2. Chris Parker in ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING
3. Ellen McCormick in MYSTERIOUS SKIN
4. Dr. Emma Russell in THE SAINT
5. Jennifer Parker in BACK TO THE FUTURE PARTS II & III
6. Ali Mills in THE KARATE KID
7. Fay in DECONSTRUCTING HARRY
8. Linda McKay in HOLLOW MAN
9. Elizabeth in HIDE AND SEEK
10. Jordan Mooney in COCKTAIL
Earliest recollections of her were in Adventures in Babysitting, one of my favorite movies when I was a child. I've always liked her and thought of her as a sort of Meg Ryan type, except that she's capable of good dramatic work as well (especially her incredible performance in Leaving Las Vegas), but she deserves better roles.

Happy 26th birthday (I'm pretty sure IMDB has it listed wrong, she was really born in 1979, I think) to Rachel McAdams, one of my latest obsessions!
BEST RACHEL MCADAMS PERFORMANCES:
1. Allie Hamilton in THE NOTEBOOK
2. Lisa Reisert in RED EYE
3. Regina George in MEAN GIRLS
4. Claire Cleary in WEDDING CRASHERS
5. Jessica in THE HOT CHICK (one of the few good things about this movie)
As beautiful as she is talented (as showcased from the performances listed above), which is a rare thing when it comes to young actresses nowadays.

Happy birthday to two great screen legends, Montgomery Clift and Rita Hayworth!
BEST MONTGOMERY CLIFT PERFORMANCES:
1. George Eastman in A PLACE IN THE SUN
2. Pvt. Robert E. Lee 'Prew' Prewitt in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY
3. Morris Townsend in THE HEIRESS
4. Ralph 'Steve' Stevenson in THE SEARCH
5. Matthew 'Matt' Garth in RED RIVER
6. Perce Howland in THE MISFITS
7. Dr. Cukrowicz in SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER
All I've seen from him, but enough to call him one of the best actors of the Golden Era. One of those guys that literally perfected the subtle way of performing on screen, he never ceases to amaze me. I also have a copy of Vittorio de Sica's TERMINAL STATION at home, a film that stars him and Jennifer Jones, something I will get to soon. Looks pretty interesting.
BEST RITA HAYWORTH PERFORMANCES:
1. Elsa 'Rosalie' Bannister in THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI
2. GILDA
3. Ann Shankland in SEPARATE TABLES
4. Maria Acuna in YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER
5. Rusty Parker/Maribelle Hicks in COVER GIRL
I still think her turn as a scheming villainess in THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI should've won her an Oscar, a role that proved she could be a great actress when given the right material.
Yesteday was the birthday of Tim Robbins
BEST TIM ROBBINS PERFORMANCES:
1. Andy Dufresne in THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
2. Jacob Singer in JACOB'S LADDER
3. Griffin Mill in THE PLAYER
4. Ebby Calvin 'Nuke' LaLoosh in BULL DURHAM
5. Dave Boyle in MYSTIC RIVER
6. Norville Barnes in THE HUDSUCKER PROXY
7. Oliver Lang in ARLINGTON ROAD
8. BOB ROBERTS
9. Gene Shepard in SHORT CUTS
10. William in CODE 46
Definitely one of the most accomplished and diverse film actors from his generation, I can hardly think of one performance of his that I didn't like............oh, wait, what was it again....oh yeah, War of the Worlds! Great movie, but Tim's performance = embarrassing! Other than that, yeah he's pretty cool.

3. Bert Gordon in THE HUSTLER
4. Asst. State Atty. Gen. Claude Dancer in ANATOMY OF A MURDER
5. John Russell in THE CHANGELING
6. Edward Rochester in JANE EYRE
7. John Rainbird in FIRESTARTER
Can't believe that's all I've seen from him! All GREAT performances nontheless, Patton and Buck Turgidson, especially, were amazing, Oscar worthy characterizations. The guy's amazing.
October 19th: John Lithgow (60)
BEST JOHN LITHGOW PERFORMANCES:
1. Reverend Shaw Moore in FOOTLOOSE
2. John Valentine in TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE
3. Sam Burns in TERMS OF ENDEARMENT
4. Eric Qualen in CLIFFHANGER
5. Judge Walter J. Skinner in A CIVIL ACTION
6. Lord Farquaad in SHREK
7. Lucas Sergeant in ALL THAT JAZZ
8. Alfred Seguine Kinsey in KINSEY
9. Smith Keen in THE PELICAN BRIEF
10. George Henderson in HARRY AND THE HENDERSONS
One of my all time favorite character actors. Beyond hilarious (I love watching him on 3rd Rock From the Sun!), and is also brilliant in his dramatic works. Have yet to see THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP.
Today it's the always reliable Viggo Mortensen (47). I'll post a list once I see A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (which will be this weekend, maybe earlier), which I think will produce his greatest performance. For now, it's all about ARAGORN, baby!

CHRISTOPHER LLOYD: (67)
1. Dr. Emmett Brown in THE BACK TO THE FUTURE TRILOGY
2. Judge Doom in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT?
3. Taber in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST
4. Prof. Plum in CLUE
5. Dr. Harvey Kelekian in WIT
6. Uncle Fester/Gordon Craven in THE ADDAMS FAMILY
7. Capt. Schultz in TO BE OR NOT TO BE
8. Bill Burns in EIGHT MEN OUT
9. Al the Boss Angel in ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD
10. Rasputin in ANASTASIA
Doc Brown is one of the most entertaining characters to watch on screen, and apart from that, I absolutely adore the wacky, eccentric, bizarre characters that this guy creates.
JEFF GOLDBLUM: (53)
1. Seth Brundle in THE FLY
2. Dr. Ian Malcolm in JURASSIC PARK
3. Michael in THE BIG CHILL
4. D.H. Banes in IGBY GOES DOWN
5. Tricycle Man in NASHVILLE
6. Freak # 1 in DEATH WISH
7. Lacey Party Guest in ANNIE HALL
8. Avnet in CHAIN OF FOOLS
9. Sean Fletcher in NINE MONTHS
10. David Levinson in INDEPENDENCE DAY
I'm not always a fan of his films, but he has never disappointed in any of roles, dramatic or comedic. His small parts in NASHVILLE and ANNIE HALL are extremely memorable.
CATHERINE DENEUVE: (62)
Unfortunately, I've seen WAY too little of hers to make a list. I've only seen THE LAST METRO, BELLE DE JOUR, and REPULSION, but she was fantastic in all of them, particularly in the Roman Polanski thriller, one of the greatest performances I've ever seen given by an actress. She is also one of the most genuinely sexiest women that ever breathed on this planet.

Can't believe I forgot to list Joan Fontaine for October 22nd! Anyways, she just turned 88 (unbelievable!).
1. The second Mrs. de Winter in REBECCA
2. Lisa Berndl in LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN
3. JANE EYRE
4. Mrs. John Day in THE WOMEN
5. Lina McLaidlaw Aysgarth IN SUSPICION
6. Lady Rowena in IVANHOE
Have yet to see a LOT of her films, including the more 'bitchy' roles I've heard she played later on in her life (which I'm very interested to see since she's always been in mind an ideal image of the sweet, delicate ingenue type). One of my favorite actresses, nevertheless.
October 23rd:
Director ANG LEE: (51)
1. Eat Drink Man Woman - 9.5/10
2. The Ice Storm - 9.5/10
3. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - 9/10
4. Sense and Sensibility - 8.5/10
5. The Wedding Banquet - 8.5/10
6. Pushing Hands - 8/10
Hated that piece of travesty 'The Hulk' and strongly disliked 'Ride with the Devil', otherwise I love the independent minded films this director brings out. Eagerly anticipating 'Brokeback Mountain', my first anticipated movie of the year as of this moment.

One of my all time favorite actors. It's pretty futile to explain how great he was, but the wide range of roles (in different kinds of genres: thrillers, comedies, westerns, war, drama, etc.) he has chosen in cinema pretty much define his incredible talent as an actor.

4. Frank Abagnale Jr. in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
5. Amsterdam Vallon in GANGS OF NEW YORK

7. Brandon Darrow in CELEBRITY
Can't stand him in his other movies. But in spite of that, I actually consider Leo to be a highly capable actor with a resonably wide range. He has definitely grown on me over the years, even if I was critical of his 'Titanic' days.
DEMI MOORE (43)

9. Diana Murphy in INDECENT PROPOSAL
10. Samantha Albertson in NOW AND THEN
Mrs. Ashton Kutcher is FAR from one of the most likable actresses, and she can be pretty FUCKING AWFUL in bad films, but that doesn't change my opinion that she can be very good or even great when given decent material. She's also one of the hottest brunettes working today, and that's a bonus.

7. Margot Mary Wendice in DIAL M FOR MURDER
Despite my love for her (mostly because of her tremendous screen presence, star quality, and spellbinding looks), the quintessential Hitchcock blonde isn't that amazing of an actress, although she has proved herself to be EXTREMELY worthwhile in 'The Country Girl', a winning performance that showcased her potential to be more than just a pretty face and gained her a 100% deserved Oscar.

Scarlett Johansson (21)
1. Lost in Translation
2. Ghost World
3. Girl with a Pearl Earring
4. A Love Song for Bobby Long
5. In Good Company
And that's actually about it, so far. I haven't seen Match Point and that is getting early Oscar buzz for her.

A little late, but yesterday (November 22) was the birthdays of:
SCARLET JOHANSSON (21)
1. Charlotte in LOST IN TRANSLATION
2. Griet in GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
3. Rebecca in GHOST WORLD
4. Rachael 'Birdy' Abundas in THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE
5. Grace MacLean in THE HORSE WHISPERER
6. Alex Foreman in IN GOOD COMPANY
7. Jordan Two Delta/Sarah Jordan in THE ISLAND
8. Ashley Parker in EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS
Haven't seen A LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG, and I am also dying to see MATCH POINT (it's about time she plays a femme fatale!) & THE BLACK DAHLIA. Definitely the best young actress out there right now, and one of the most subtle actresses working today.
JAMIE LEE CURTIS (47)
1. Laurie Strode in HALLOWEEN, HALLOWEEN 2, & HALLOWEEN: H20
2. Wanda Gershwitz in A FISH CALLED WANDA
3. Tess Coleman in FREAKY FRIDAY
4. Helen Tasker in TRUE LIES
5. Louisa Pendel in THE TAILOR OF PANAMA
6. Kim Hammond in PROM NIGHT
7. Judith 'Jude' Madigan in MOTHER'S BOYS
8. Elizabeth Solley in THE FOG
9. Shelly DeVoto in MY GIRL
10. Claire Cooper in FOREVER YOUNG
The definitive 'scream queen' (well, after Fay Wray and the legendary Janet Leigh, who coincidently just so happens to be her mother), but she also feels right at home in her comedic roles and never ceases to make me laugh.
