Willow's a Sucker for Her Own Sitcom

By Coeli Carr

Alyson Hannigan (search), fresh from her seven-year stint as the preternatural Willow Rosenberg on TV's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" — and a starring role in the movie comedy "American Wedding" that opens Friday — makes no secret of her fondest career wish.

A sitcom of her own.

"There's a lot of interest, which is very nice," Hannigan told The Post.

Although "Buffy" gave Willow a rich story line involving drama, action and horror, TV comedy is her dream. She cites a couple of comedic actors whose work she admires and says one even influenced her "Buffy" character.

"There were a lot of similarities between Willow and Phoebe [Lisa Kudrow's (search) character on 'Friends'], even if Willow is sort of the smart character and Phoebe is not."

And then there's Carol Burnett (search).

Hannigan said she adored Burnett and used to stay up late to watch the program with her grandmother.

Along with Burnett's timing and range of characters, Hannigan was struck by Burnett's self-effacing performance style.

She could "be 100 percent committed to [looking silly] for the sake of the comedy," Hannigan said. "It seems egoless, which you just have to do if you want to be funny."

That commitment includes the pratfalls at which Burnett excelled. But Hannigan concedes it may be tougher for any woman to drop the glamorous self image.

"There's one slight little moment in 'American Wedding' when I get to do my first piece of physical comedy - my very first stunt fall for laughs," she says.

Having experienced the more serious tone of "Buffy" 's later seasons, Hannigan says the third of the "American Pie" trio refueled her comic trajectory.

" 'American Wedding' just really reminded me how much I adore comedy," she said.

Hannigan stops short of describing her ideal sitcom scenario for fear of limiting herself but won't waver on two points.

"I desperately want great writing, because I'm spoiled now, and [want] a great cast."

C'mon you networks execs! Listen up and give Alyson her own show!!

If she wants great writing she'll have to look elsewhere than a sitcom...

But I do like her kookiness and admit she may be fun in a comedy series.

She can always try cable television. Showtime and HBO have some the best comedic writing on television, although most of their shows tend to lean towards the drama side.

Oooh I have the perfect plot for her sitcom. She'll basically be playing herself..she's an actress trying to start over again after her long running show is cancelled. So she buys a house in L.A., but what she doesn't know is that its haunted! But it turns out the ghost is quite a gentleman and speaks with an English accent (he used to be a butler at the house many years ago) She befriends the ghost, whose name is Wentworth, and together they try to help her get the next big gig. Wacky antics ensue. The show will be called "Alyson & the Ghost" Damn I'm brilliant..this is too good to be true...oh wait...it is :p (read other thread involving Ms. Hannigan)

I just can't see Hannigan as a lead in anything. Period. She just doesn't have any charisma. Thats not to say she isn't funny or a great actor. Just lead characaters need charisma.

She seems to me like she's more of a supporting character than a capable lead character. She doesn't really have the presence a lead character in a weekly sitcom would need in my opinion, but who knows, if she gets one, I'd give it a shot

well, rachel could have skipped a year in elementary school. graduate from college at 20 instead of 21, and work for three years. bingo! i like alyson hannigan, i think she'd be good in her own sitcom. but honestly, it all depends on the plot for me.

I'd check it out it simply for the lovely and talented Hannigan, who I like more and more as time goes on but I'm not entirely sold on the idea, there are very few sitcoms I like (Scrubs being the only one on right now). It'd have to be something really special to keep me watching.
