I don't know much about this movie and I'm not especially interested in it. The only reason I am starting this thread is because I have a question: my sister is considering taking our 10-year-old cousin to this, but apparently it has language and sexual content in it. I doubt it's very bad, but does anyone know just how bad it is?

Well, personally I dont know because I have not seen it...
Here is a brief summary of the plot...
BEWARE OF SPOILERS!!!
But, I assume it's pretty sexual and has a potty mouth...
Brittney Murpheys character is a rich girl gone wrong who has lost it all... She is a recovering methane addict and stripper at a local club... Dakota Flanning plays the child that has come out of the woodwork to help Murphy with her problems... Flanning does have a potty mouth in this movie... She is a good child, but is a snob and has a bad mouth... Things progress nicely in the sister relationship until Murphy relapses... Flanning becomes furious as any child would, belts Murphy, says a few choice words, then decides to hop a train until she arrives in Central Park... At this point it's nighttime and Flanning feels she made a mistake for running away... Too Late!!! She now is kidnapped by a homeless bum... Murphey hears of the news over the local news and it's off to Central Park she goes... But, not before she stops by the local gun shop and picks up a double barrel shotgun... Then, it's off to the local shop to pick up some mace, a new dress, and a 6 pack... Now it's off to New York...
That's basically an overall plot explaining the first hour...
movielover999, something tells me that doesn't really happen ;).
Anyway Colin, I think it would probably be okay for your 10 year old cousin to see, well, depending on what kind of movies she's allowed to watch. If she's allowed to watch movies like Legally Blonde and About A Boy, then I'd say it should be fine to take her to this.

I have absolutely no desire to see this movie...which means I probably will anyway, but I won't be happy about it. When this trailer played at AMERICAN WEDDING, I got up and took a bathroom break. Just seeing the film's advertising makes me ill. Okay, so I might be a little harsh on UPTOWN GIRLS, but every time I see something about this, it just looks even more like a moronic, schmaltzy, and creepy piece of garbage that crawled out of Hell's sewer system.
So in short...looks ok. :p

This is going to be closed seeing how the movie doesn't open until August 15.
As for the movie I think it looks cute. I've said this before and I'll say it again, this looks to be a female version of About a Boy. Now that could be a good thing or it could be a bad thing. It could be a good thing because I loved About a Boy but it could be a bad thing also because I love About a Boy, if it pales in comparison. But I love Brittany Murphy and I like Dekota Fanning so I'll definately check it out.

'ColinM', I haven't seen the film, but I'd wager most of the "language" and "sexual content" takes place in the first 15 minutes of the film, when Brittany Murphy's character attends rock 'n roll clubs and lives the high life, off of her deceased father's trust fund (He was a "singing legend"). I doubt much of either foul things happen much once we meet Dakota Fanning's character, as it seems to turn into more of cutesy slapstick film after her character comes into play. As 'Mike' said, this film'd probably be okay for your cousin if she's allowed to view About a Boy or Mrs. Doubtfire-type films.
P.S. I would put up the cast, MPAA, director, producer, writer, etc. credits, but 'The Other' posted a rule recently saying that all early threads would be locked indefinitely, I believe, so I won't, but I am DYING to see this movie.

Dakota Fanning is scary. I worry about people who can act that good when they're THAT young. Either she or her crazy showbiz parents are obviously possessed.

I'll be skipping this one for sure. I think it looks dreadful, every time I see the trailer or TV spots, I cringe in disgust. Besides, I don't think I'll be able to take too much of Brittany Murphy in a lead role. And the same goes for Dakota Fanning, she's a sweet girl, but very annoying.

I really liked About A Boy (7.5/10 or B or ***) and what can I say about this? I am really looking forward to it. I dunno why, it just looks cute and funny and something I will enjoy. I'm seeing this at 7pm Friday then Freddy Vs. Jason at 9:20pm and I can't wait. I'm hoping both movies will be an 8/10 or higher. I know Uptown Girls will be, but I'm a little worried about Freddy Vs. Jason...

I think it's Uptown Girls and not Freddy vs. Jason you should be worried about. Filmfreakcentral just posted a zero star review to go along with Capone's bashing at AICN. I expect it will easily be one of the year's worst.

Woah I guess I'm teh only one who dared see this... at least I didnt pay for a ticket :D.
All in all, if you think ur gunna like this movie, ur gunna like it. If you think it looks like a shitfest, well then stay away.
If you want to kno what this movie is about, read the posts above. Basically, the first half is Brittany Murphy acting like a drunken hippie caring for her bastard child played surprisingly well by Dakota Fanning. The second half becomes more generic, predictable, and borders boring. Lucky for us, Brittany Murphy's charisma keeps this movie from boring the audience in even the most tedious and sappy scenes. Even Luckier for us is Dakota Fanning, the highlight of this "film". Her performance is jaw-dropping. Seriously, this freakin 8 yr old girl steals the show from Brittany Murphy. I actually bought her outragous (sp) character. Bravo!
Now to other areas. Directing was surprisingly good for a movie like this. We get some pretty cool shots but we also get some that just dont work, such as the tea cup scene (IMO). The supporting cast was also decent to say the least. Marly Shelton played her cliched role to a T (i dont get this expression but w.e) and the guy who played Murray in Clueless is always fun to watch. My biggest problem with minor characters was that stupid love interest rocker with that annoying as hell accent. Man, this guy was so irrititaing!
Finally, (sry about how messy this review is) I have to comment on Murphy and Fannings' chemistry. The 2 actors played off of each other extremely well, it helped to hold the movie together no matter how weak the script got. Both happily come out of this movie unscathed.
My Grade: 6/10 (i was thinkin 5 but i'll give it the benefit)

Plot: "Molly Gunn is the freewheeling daughter of a late rock legend and the toast of the Manhattan social scene, but when her inheritance is stolen, Molly is forced to do something she's never done before - get a job. She becomes nanny to precocious Ray Schleine, an "eight-year-old going on forty." Emotionally distant from her A&R executive mother Roma, Ray has grown up with a revolving door of nannies and too little stability. Molly and Ray both feel painfully alone in the world, but as they try to make their new arrangement work, each discovers in the other a true friend."
Starting with the 1930s animated classic, Snow White And The Seven Dwarves, Walt Disney Pictures has cornered the market on fairy tales, turning most of the more popular ones into hit films, including Aladdin, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Cinderella, but, this Friday, MGM released an original, modern times fairy tale, Uptown Girls. If you didn't already know the plot, I've supplied it above. It's a story of love, loss, and friendship. The question is, is it entertaining or a bust?
The film stars Brittany Murphy as Molly Gunn, the free-spirited, pampered, and insanely rich daughter of a dead rock legend, who is about to get a giant wake-up call. Murphy's performance recalls the work of two great actresses: Marilyn Monroe and Lucille "I Love Lucy" Ball. It's a delightful mix of the serious, absurd, dramatic, and comedic. Murphy seems to be having tons of fun playing this fairy tale character. As for Dakota Fanning, WOW! It's scary how talented she is, to tell the truth. She's completely adorable and believable as the obsessive young girl. This performance is award-caliber, and she completely steals the show. Each performance from this short wonder is an example of why movies are made. To entertain.
Boaz Yakin definitely uses every style bone in his body in this film. It's one of the few I can call, "a postcard to the Big Apple." Yakin, through his direction, tries, and suceeds, in capturing the old-time magic to be found in New York, New York. Is this entirely realistic? No. Is it magical, beautiful, stylish, and warm? A resounding YES.
The four screenwriters, Julia Dahl, Lisa Davidowitz, Mo Ogrodnik, and Allison Jacobs, craft the script, which is the film's strong base. If the script's weak, the film will be a stylish, yet shallow comedy, but this script is quite strong, thus the film is elevated to a magical level. The film perfectly devotes the correct amount of time to each character's plights, and is not short on heart-warming and/or hilarious moments. I honestly shed a tear when Ray (Fanning) talked to a nearly lost loved one.
Overall, I loved this film. It's magical, loving, funny, and fresh. It's a "Hollywood" film, yes, but it's still something special, that entertains, enlightens, and causes gut-busting laughs. I think everyone should see this. It's a true crowd-pleaser. SWINGING DOOR!

Poor Dakota Flanning... She is standing on the edge of a street near the end of the movie looking for a lost nickle... You see... Head of State is the funniest movie of the year? Just goes to show you how subjective comedy is. I'd say that movie rates about a 0/10, so Uptown Girls must be about a -1 out of 10. Of course, if the "sold out" audience of old ladies and little girls were laughing hysterically throughout, maybe it is a masterpiece. Let's see. Yeah, it looks to make around 35 Million when it's all said and done, which is good, especially since it only cost about 20 Million to make, but it still could be doing better. It will make a profit for sure in theaters though, and whatever it makes on video will just be gravy. Anyway, I think I might check this one out in theaters if I have the time. I'll tell you why I hate movies like this. There are movies like You Can Count On Me that earn your tears because the characters are three-dimensional and nothing is forced. Everything happens naturally and stems from the characters. And then there are movies like Uptown Girls, which have all the subtlety of a sledgehammer swung against your head. They try to manipulate you for your tears. The characters are one-dimensional and don't behave like real people but movie people. It's all phony as hell. That's why I hate crap like Uptown Girls.

Well, I think it's a moot point, since I could easily point out many instances of many others being over the top. But it doesn't matter to me because that's the nature of the beast. That's what people are here for. And I wouldn't even classify it as being over the top in most cases. Just passionate people talking about movies they love or love to hate.

I did see it, hence the new post today with the You Can Count On Me reference. Snuck into it after seeing SWAT. I don't see why it's such a big deal that I posted my thoughts again today, but apparently some people have a problem with it.

I don't think it's a big deal that you posted your thoughts after seeing it, I just think people were confused that you actually had seen it. Reading your post earlier, I didn't think you had seen it. You didn't exactly say that you did or give it a rating, or say "I thought it was bla, bla, bla, etc..." If you saw it and didn't like it, that's completely fine. I just think that people thought you were saying those things without seeing it. But if those are your thoughts after seeing it, then that's quite alright and you are allowed to state your opinion on it.
Here's your post:
I'll tell you why I hate movies like this. There are movies like You Can Count On Me that earn your tears because the characters are three-dimensional and nothing is forced. Everything happens naturally and stems from the characters. And then there are movies like Uptown Girls, which have all the subtlety of a sledgehammer swung against your head. They try to manipulate you for your tears. The characters are one-dimensional and don't behave like real people but movie people. It's all phony as hell. That's why I hate crap like Uptown Girls.
Do you see why some were confused?

I suppose I should have rated it, but I didn't think I needed to in order to make it clear that I saw it. I just didn't feel like writing a full review. I only said as much as I felt like saying. But if I confused people, I apologize.

It's quite alright. Even if you wouldn't have rated it, you could have said something like "I really didn't like this movie. It was so phony, etc..." Or "I snuck into this after seeing S.W.A.T. and...." Just something that says that you went to see it. ;)
I saw this movie today, and it sucked. I went it with alright expectations, and the only parts that made me laugh was the, "Slut bag whore" part."
4/10

Uptown Girls was somewhat entertaining with some good laughs, but overall was pretty unsatisfying. Brittany Murphy is good for the most part and her interactions with Dakota Fanning (who steals the movie) are the best parts of the movie. Where the movie fails is the forced romance plot, annoying side characters, and the absolute worst male lead in the last five to ten years. The guy was a horrible actor, had a horrible accent, and couldn't sing at all. There was absolutely no chemistry between him and Murphy and there was no reason to want the two of them together. The guy was a jackass, plain and simple.
I give it a 6/10 solely for Dakota Fanning and a few funny parts.
