Taking the cake, unsurprisingly, at Number 1 this week was the third in the AMERICAN PIE saga, AMERICAN PIE: THE WEDDING, with $4,304,195, which became the 7th sequel released this year to debut at #1. However, this was the first of the AP films to go to the top, with the other films debuting at #2 in their respective opening weekends in 1999 and 2001. TERMINATOR 3 fell 41% and out of the top spot after 3 weeks. It still managed to pull in $1,057,157 and has earned itself an impressive $16,545,858. The twists and turns of IDENTITY was still intriguing audiences as it only fell 34% with a two week total of $2,655,393. Still going strong after 6 weeks is the action of CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE. The McG directed action/comedy has accumulated a healthy sum of $18,234,715. The Aussie crime comedy BAD EGGS isn't alighting the Box Office on too much fire, but has managed $1,855,938 after 3 weeks. Falling 54% was the Gwyneth Paltrow outing VIEW FROM THE TOP which only has $871,422, equally unexciting is the Aussie made comedy DANNY DECKCHAIR which fell 32% with a combined two week total of $734,405. Still hanging around the Top 10 after 8 weeks and surpassing my expectations of performing impressively is the Jim Carrey comedy BRUCE ALMIGHTY with $20,168,695. Still hanging around at #9 is the George Clooney drama CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND, which only dropped 26%, and has just under a million to its name, with $943,293. Another film performing surprisingly well is the Eddie Murphy family funny DADDY DAY CARE which has managed $14,506,718 after 7 weeks. Making surprising rises this week were the doco TRAVELLING BIRDS and I CAPTURE THE CASTLE, whcih jumped 4 places and 2 places respectively with their totals sitting at $1,684,756 and $1,044,832. Eliza Dushku's trip into the woods saw her fall 51% in WRONG TURN's second week which now has $172,030. Making a small blip on the charts was yet another sequel, but much more uneventful, FRIDAY AFTER NEXT, which debuted at #17 with $44,754. EXTREME OPS didn't maintain much audience interest in its second week as it plummeted 73% to #19 with $38,055. After 2 weeks it sits with $221,794. Maybe it'll have better luck on the video shelves, where i'm sure it won't take long to get there. THE HULK's 7 week run in the cinemas looks to have run out as the Eric Bana flick falls 48% with $35,665. Amazingly, it hasn't broken the $10 Million mark with $9,593,535. Not having much luck at all this week was Kurt Russell's cop drama DARK BLUE which failed to crack the charts, due mainly to its small cinema exposure and little publicity.
THIS WEEK (August 14th): A rather packed week for Aussie cinemas this week with no less than 6 films scheduled to open. After having its original June release date pushed back to September, the 60's style sex comedy DOWN WITH LOVE finds it place this week in Aussie cinemas. The Renee Zellweger/Ewan McGregor flick opens opposite Bruce Willis, Monica Bellucci, Johnny Messner and Cole Hauser doing the action/war bit in T E A R S O F T H E S U N. Ray Liotta and Jason Patric headline the R rated cop drama NARC, and secret agent simplicity meets Matrix confusion in the thriller CYPHER starring Jeremy Northam and Lucy Liu. We also get a double dose of Australian cinema with two home made productions, TAKE AWAY and the NIGHT we called it a DAY starring Dennis Hopper, Melanie Griffith, Joel Edgerton and Porta De Rossi, telling of when Frank Sinatra visited Australia and caused some trouble. There's also Advance Screenings of Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron going for the ultimate heist in THE ITALIAN JOB.
