My Thoughts? Personally, I am unsure if I'll see this or not. I loathe Tara Reid and, to a slightly lesser degree, Ashton Kutcher, but David Zucker is a comedic genius. I'll probably just wait until HBO or Starz! to view it.

It looks okay. I might see it in theaters on the 30th along with Jeepers Creepers 2.

I love the "O.J.'s on the loose!" line in the trailer, that had me cracking up...

It doesn't look great, but doesn't look that bad, either. I'll go see this one with low expectations.

It looks alright. I really like hottie Tara Reid, but I'm not that big of a fan of Ashton Kutcher. I never minded him before, but lately, I find him kind of annoying.

The only joke in the previews that I found very funny was the O.J. one. Sue me, but I still find it funny every single time I see it in the previews. I swear it will be the funniest joke in the whole movie.

I won't see this in theaters, but I'll definitely rent it on video.

I loathe Tara Reid too. It seems shes loaded all the time, maybe it's just my imagination. I also loathe Ashton Kutcher, I mean c'mon. How many PR guys asses do you have to kiss to date Demi Moore?

This looks bad, and apparently even the talentless waste of skin Kutcher hates it. But one of my heroes, Michael Madsen, is in it, so I may have to see a matinee.

Looks just like another rehash of past romantic comedies to me. I'll probably see it on T.V though.

Hmm... while Tara Reid is a very hot chick (what did you think I was going to say? talented? bah!), and despite the inclusion of kick-ass actors such as Michael Madsen and Terrence Stamp, as well as the fact that David Zucker of "Airplane" is directing. "My Boss's Daughter" looks and sounds lame as hell.

The one apparent bright spot of this movie is that David Zucker directs it. It may actually be decent by romantic comedy standards, but I'm not holding my breath.

Is it just me or are all of Kutcher's movies are the same, you could put the trailers with this and Just Married and you couldn't tell the difference.

I actually want to see this. I was surprised by JUST MARRIED (8/10), and I like all the actors involved. Plus the trailers are pretty funny. I will see this Friday or Saturday this weekend.

And on another note, hasn't this been on the shelf for a couple of years? I remember hearing that Tara Reid and Carson Daly broke up because of a supposed romance with Ashton Kutcher, but that was back in 2001. Then I remember seeing a trailer with JUST MARRIED but it was called something else and said it was going to be released in the spring. Can someone fill me in on what went on with this pic?

It has been on the shelf for a while. It would be on video already if not for Kutcher's rising fame. An August release + long delays = not looking good for this one. First release date was November 15, 2002. Then February 21, 2003. Then October 25, 2002. Then February 28, 2003. Finally, August 22, 2003. Plus, in an interview in Premiere Madsen said Kutcher hates it.

Plot: "...who's on the run from local drug dealers."

Screenplay Desperation 101: When unable to think of original ideas, throw in drug dealers for your Act 3.

Couldn't Dorfman have written more appropriate characters for a teen comedy? Why not "who's on the run for accidentally running over the beloved Shih-tzu of the local Mr. Big, who's got possibly unethical connections with their father and is dating his former wife" or something. Why drug dealers? What can they bring to the table in a romantic comedy? Think of all the lost gags that could have been mined from a dead Shih-tzu. Example 3,592 why I hate Hollywood.

This, despite not looking that great, is the new release that has the best chance of success (Maybe The Medallion will do okay too) because of Kutcher and his rising fame. I think that it looks mildly amusing. Did anyone see Tara Reid on Leno about a week and a half ago? They showed a clip of her doing a striptease in front of Kutcher because she thinks he gay. She looked extremely hot in that clip.

I'm not digging what I'm seeing at all. Tara Reid's nice to look at, but when she opens her mouth or act, little z's pop into my head. I'm also really irritated by the fact that Kutcher is even a rising star, he hasn't really done anything good outside of That 70's Show. And he's banging on the biggest MILF's in Hollywood? This is getting more and more fucked up by the minute

I saw this movie last night, it's a really odd movie. The ads would have you believe it's a cute romantic comedy with Ashton Kutcher and Tara Reid, but it's really not at all. It's really quite a dark comedy about Ashton getting into one nightmarish situation after another as he looks after his boss's house. In a way it reminded me of "After Hours" or "Neighbors", in that there was an undercurrent of creepiness with all these weird characters that keep coming into Ashton's character's life. The humor is very politically incorrect and bleak at times too, with jokes at the expense of blacks, gays, the blind, disabled people, Jews, you name it. I can't help feeling that the original version of this was probably a lot more interesting before the editors got their hands on it and cut it down to its current 70 (or so) minute state. The presence of comedic actors like Andy Richter, Molly Shannon, David Koechner, and Dave Foley meant that it wasn't a complete washout, but if the focus had been more on the story of "The Guests" (the original title of the movie) instead of Ashton and Tara, it would have been a much better movie.

Yes, but After Just Married released earlier this year, a Kutcher-starring Romantic-Comedy seemed like it would hit better than a plain comedy.

I would've thought that the reason for My Boss's Daughter's emphasis on Kutcher wasn't Just Married(didn't that movie tank at the box office anyway?), but his overexposed romance with Demi.

Damn why all the hate for Kuchter. The only thing I find annoying about him is the show Punk'd. I actually enjoy him in the movies he has done and he is great in 70's show. He was the only thing decent in Just Married and he is much better than Tara Reid and Brittany Murphy for christs sake. This movie could be a surprise, I stress the word could be. I really liked Meet the Parents so if this is half as good then I will be pleasantly surprised.

I saw this last night and actually had a decent time. I was one of the few people who was anticipating this movie and couldn't wait to see it. It is a very funny and original comedy which makes you laugh almost the whole way through. The situations that Kutcher's character gets himself into are unbelievable and keep you laughing. Tara Reid has a smaller part than suggested in the ads, and only appears for close to half an hour. She plays the same character she did in AMERICAN PIE in this film. I swear the similarities are almost eerie. Molly Shannon and Andy Richter are funny as well, and Terrence Stamp is one scary asshole in this movie. The owl is also a pretty funny addition. A friend I went with said it was the funniest movie they had ever seen. I won't go that far but it was definetely a hilarious teen movie that succeeds in making the audience it is aimed for laugh.

Grade: 8/10 or B+

I too enjoyed My Boss's Daughter. It truly is a dark comedy more than a romantic comedy, with bad situation after bad situation happening to Kutcher's character. I highly recommend it as it is a fun time at the theatres if one knows going in that it is going to be a rather dark comedic journey. It deserved much better than it received at the box office, not something I could say about Marci X or The Medallion, which actually performed better than it deserved.

Yea, the newspaper I work for has this guy that reviews most of the movies for the city ... and he almost never fails to give "cheap entertainment", which is pretty much all the mainstream movies, a crappy score, while the artsy-fartsy 3-hour long sleeping pills always come up 4-stars. That's why I like this site -- Joblo admits one of his main intentions of building it was to show these "fine gems" for what they are, not just give something a high score because it's supposed to appeal to the film festival.

Original.... um.... why did I say that again...?

ok let me try to justify that (not well supported) statement.

MBD is about a guy in love with his bosses daughter. The way things work out, he ends up house sitting for her. In what is supposed to be a quiet, relaxing night, a strange string of events occur, leaving the poor guy to a night he would never forget.

SPOILERS
this movie was all about slapstick comedy interrupted by dialogue and humor that many tight asses might find offensive. In my case, I thought everything worked and found it downright hilarious.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS:
While I would love to say Molly Shannon's character was orignal, she really wasn't. She fell to several cliches but made them work. The girl with the bloody head was sumthing I was not expecting AT ALL. To hear the squish of her head against several objects caused non stopped gags/laughs from the entire audience. The story of the son with teh restraining order wasn't something I've seen to often either. Andy Richter's character was another fun one, his 3 dimensional (IMO) character was a welcome change from teh usually teen comedy, as was the drug dealer and Molly Shannons character (contradiction??).

TWISTS:
Well, I was surprised when Tara Reid thought that Ktucher was gay, it made for great dialouge between the two and a great bedroom scene.

i g2g now, i got sum more stuff to add

For some reason my local theater got the magnificent idea of playing this a week from now, even though it hardly made any money (they usually only play films from which profit is insured).

Even though they have seats for $3 on one night in the week, I won't be spending that much on this.

I thought maybe I'd sneak into it just to catch Michael Madsen in a movie that's actually in theaters. After reading Foywonder's review, I think I'll pass.

One weekend where two movies open neither of which were screened ahead of time for critics? Sounds like something right up my alley! However, I was only willing to see one of the two so I flipped a coin. Either way, I lose but it’s a matter of to exactly what degree do I lose.

Well, at about the time late in MY BOSS’S DAUGHTER when Michael Madsen began spraying the living room with a 5-foot stream of urine I suddenly found myself sitting there in the theater wondering if I may have been better off going to see MARCI X.

I’d say I lost big this time out.

I understand that MY BOSS’S DAUGHTER has been sitting on the shelf gathering dust for about 18 months or so. I say it should have stayed on the shelf. In fact, it should have been locked in a safe then the safe should have been put on a ship and taken somewhere out in the middle of the ocean and dumped over the side never to be seen again.

Question. Just how bad must a movie be for a studio exec to finally just say, “Sure, we spent millions of dollars producing it but it’s just so damn unwatchable that there is no chance in Hell that we’re ever going to make a penny of it back. Releasing it won’t do anyone any good?” MY BOSS’S DAUGHTER is every bit as terrible as GIGLI yet isn’t getting nearly the venom in the press. Perhaps if Demi Moore had been cast in the Tera Reid role then maybe critics everywhere would be having a field day with it just as they did with the “Bennifer” fiasco. On the other hand, MY BOSS’S DAUGHTER is just another painfully unfunny comedy and there really is no shortage of those coming out of Hollywood these days. I guess it’s just rare that one comes along that doesn’t star Martin Laurence, Rob Schneider, Chris Kattan, David Spade, or Cuba Gooding Jr. And whatever happened to Yahoo Serious anyway?

As I’m sure you already know, MY BOSS’S DAUGHTER stars current media whore of the moment Ashton Kutcher. Sometime around the beginning of summer Hollywood decided that Ashton Kutcher was an A-list star despite the fact that his actual credits hardly reflect those of an A-list star. I’m still not sure how starring in DUDE, WHERE’S MY CAR? and hosting a hidden camera show on MTV gives Hollywood a hard on to cast him as either Superman or Batman or the lead in a variety of other potential blockbusters but apparently it did. Then he started dating a media whore of the past looking to become the comeback media whore of the year and suddenly everywhere you look ASHTONMANIA ™ is running wild. Maybe when he does that Cameron Crowe film he’ll show us all a different side of himself and prove himself to be quite the young thespian. Until that happens, if it happens, I just don’t get ASHTONMANIA ™.

Personally, I see Ashton Kutcher as nothing more than the male equivalent of Jennifer Love Hewitt. They really do have a lot in common. Both got their big break as a member of an ensemble cast on a popular FOX network TV show. Both tend to play sweet-natured characters. Both are capable of pulling off lightweight roles but have no business carrying a movie. Both are really more famous for being “hotties” than for anything of actual substance they’ve done. And both get a ton of press regarding their dating lives. In Ashton Kutcher’s case, it’s his relationship with older woman Demi Moore. In Jennifer Love Hewitt’s case, it seems to be every under-30 male actor in Hollywood. Now that I think about it and I know that I’m really going out on a limb with this one, has anyone ever actually seen Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Love Hewitt in the same room together? Hmm…

Getting back to MY BOSS’S DAUGHTER, I think it speaks volumes about just how awful this movie is (and maybe it says a few things about Ashton Kutcher’s alleged star power as well) that a group of eight teenage girls walked out about halfway into the movie. I thought teenage girls were Kutcher’s target demographic too? Isn’t that why Warner Brothers wanted him for Batman or Superman, to bring in the teen mallrats?

Well, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel like walking out with them. Sitting through a laugh-free comedy tends to be the worst type of movie-going experience and MY BOSS’S DAUGHTER is easily in the top 3 of the worst movies I’ve seen in a theater this year. I could have heard a pin drop inside the sparsely crowded theater so I suspect I wasn’t the only one who was wasting precious time that could have been better spent on more constructive ventures like cleaning the septic tank, downloading porn, or posting something hateful in the talkback section.

Here’s your premise. Ashton Kutcher is this good-natured doofus, the kind he always plays as opposed to Seann William Scott who always plays the smug-natured doofus, who has a crush on his boss’s daughter played by actress-turned professional party girl-turned actress again Tera Reid.

Let’s pause there for a moment because I’ve got to say something about Tera Reid. This girl seriously needs an intervention. No, I’m not talking about her hard partying ways that have been the subject of much tabloid fodder. I’m talking about an intervention to keep her away from the tanning salon. At the rate she’s going, Tera Reid is going to turn into that shriveled up old woman from THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY before she’s 35. There’s such a thing as a healthy tan and then there’s having skin the same color as Hulk Hogan’s. She’s orange, people! Ugh! Somebody please get this girl away from the tanning bed.

Awhile back, internet wrestling fans gave Hulk Hogan the rather sarcastic nickname of The Orange Goblin. I think I’m going to start calling Tera Reid “The Orange Harpy.” At least will for the remainder of this review.

Okay, so the good-natured doofus’ boss from hell (Terrance Stamp) is a humorless fascist who fires people at will and basically rules over his company through sheer intimidation. The Orange Harpy asks the good-natured doofus if he’d be willing to come over to the house that night. The good-natured doofus is ecstatic thinking that she finally notices him and wants to spend some time alone with him. What he doesn’t know is that she was being forced to housesit for her father that night unless she found a good-natured doofus to do it for her.

So the good-natured doofus shows up at the boss’s house only to find out that the Orange Harpy has gone to a party with her boyfriend and that he’s been duped into house sitting for Dad while he’s away on a business trip. He’s basically given 3 instructions: feed his pet owl, don’t get dirt on anything, and nobody else is allowed in the house. I bet you can’t guess what happens next?

Anything actually resembling a plot ceases at about this point. In fact, the night before I saw the movie I watched FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD on American Movie Classics and I swear the plot to that movie makes more sense than the series of events that follows in this one. The movie from here on out consists of two things: one wacky situation after another each one more wacky and unfunny than the next and wacky characters each one more wacky and unfunny than the next.

Let’s see. Molly Shannon shows up at the house. She plays the somewhat lowbred secretary who the good-natured doofus inadvertently got fired so now she guilt trips him into letting her stay the night. Soon she’s followed by three more of her ilk including Carmen Electra whose character only seems to exist for two scenes - the wet T-shirt scene and the scene where the good-natured doofus is coerced into giving her a breast exam because she suddenly becomes convinced she has breast cancer. Before any of you get to excited, let me remind you that the movie is PG-13.

Also along with Shannon’s character is the black guy whose sole contribution is being black and having virtually no lines of dialogue and the greasy looking redneck character who provides such comic gems like his conspiracy theory of how JFK was actually assassinated by Desi Arnez Jr. Please, try to control your laughter until the end.

Then comes Andy Richter as the Orange Harpy’s scheming brother “Red” whom dad has a restraining order against. Richter is totally wasted and has virtually nothing to do but at least he gets to bare his naked ass before it’s all said and done so I guess it was all worth it.

Just when it doesn’t seem like it could get any less funny along comes Michael Madsen as a drug dealer’s thug determined to get what his boss is owed from the good-natured doofus’ boss. The highlight for this character being the before mentioned scene of Madsen’s character urinating on everything in the living room. When I got up to get something to drink I missed the scene of the owl snorting cocaine out the toilet but thank God I didn’t miss out on the comic hilarity that is an endless stream of bodily fluids being sprayed everywhere for minutes at a time.

The Orange Harpy returns home having just broken up with her boyfriend and immediately she begins pouring her heart out to the good-natured doofus. What he doesn’t know is that she thinks he’s gay. It’s amazing how this movie adds the whole mistaken for being gay element to the plot from out of nowhere and then goes nowhere with it before blowing it off just as quickly as it introduced it. Then again, this is also the same movie that expects us to believe that the boss’s daughter doesn’t see or hear any of the mass destruction going on downstairs.

But wait, there’s still more wackiness and wacky characters to come. At one point the good-natured doofus gets confused for the blind date of a neighbor’s daughter, who happens to be recovering from some sort of head trauma. This leads to an extremely lame rip-off of the “Massive Head Wound Harry” character Dana Carvey did on Saturday Night Live back in the early 90’s.

Then the Orange Harpy’s ex-boyfriend shows up and it turns out he’s actually a short, fat, neurotic black guy. Oh, the comedy! I tell you the only thing amusing about this character is that they didn’t get Anthony Anderson to play it.

I’m sure I’m leaving out more wacky characters and wacky situations but what’s the point? I think I can pretty much summarize just how incredibly unfunny the movie is by describing one particular scene.

The boss’s owl is named OJ. OJ flies away. Ashton Kutcher runs outside screaming after it. Molly Shannon tells him to calm down. Ashton turns around just as some young blonde-haired women walk by in the background and yells, “How can you expect me to calm down! OJ is on the loose!” The young blondes all scream and run away.

Yeah, nothing beats topical humor. I’m amazed they didn’t work in a Joey Buttafuoco reference. Hell, even a Lewinsky joke would have been timelier. Just as I did with that scene, most of my time was spent sitting there in my seat shaking my head at just how bad it all was and wondering how anyone in their right mind could have thought any of this was worth making.

To top it all off, the movie has the audacity to play the romance between the two leads as a straightforward romance. None of this is played for laughs not that it stood much of a chance of getting any. They have all of about 10 minutes of screen time together but by the end we’re supposed to believe they’re both deeply in love with one another and that she’d be willing to drop everything and rearrange her entire life for this man.

MY BOSS’S DAUGHTER feels like some really awful comedy from the 80s that would have starred C. Thomas Howell or Scott Valentine or maybe even Patrick Dempsey but it has the mentality of a 90’s gross-out comedy. Only thing is MY BOSS’S DAUGHTER would be a flat out, humorless stinker regardless of what decade it came out. It’s inept, unfunny, and an absolute waste of perfectly fine film stock.

I don’t know exactly who deserves the most blame for this one. Whether it’s the screenwriter who wrote such weak material, director David Zucker who clumsily executes one lame gag after another, the actors who often just seem to be reciting lines or doing really amateurish slapstick, or the producers who gave this crap the greenlight; somebody screwed up royally. Hell, I’ll just blame them all. Fortunately for all involved, hardly anyone besides me will ever actually see this movie.

Wow, I read the entire above review and I could envision the movie perfectly.... it reminds me alot of a laugh-free comedy I endured years ago in the theatre... The Nutty Professor II. I swear I didn't laugh once throughout the entire movie & I still get pissed whenever I think about it. I mean, how could anyone make such a piece of garbage? Anyways, since then, I have a special hatred for unfunny comedies, which as MadsenOMC stated, make for the single worst movie experience a person can possibly have. I just have to comment on a few things about My Boss' Daughter that I find particularly ridiculous (mind you this is just from what I've heard, there's no fucking way I'd pay to see this movie)

I suppose a few of the points below may contain spoliers, (although I doubt anyone would care, it's not like I can "ruin" this movie for them...)

1. The O.J. joke..... 1994 called, it wants it's reference back. Fucking hell, it's almost been 10 years! you're living in the past people, move on!

and the greasy looking redneck character who provides such comic gems like his conspiracy theory of how JFK was actually assassinated by Desi Arnez Jr. Please, try to control your laughter until the end.

Okay, who in the hell is Dasie Arnez jr.? I'm 21 & thus a few years older than this movie's target audience and if I don't know who in the hell he is, I can gurantee you that most of the audience won't. Fuck.... contemporize man!:D

2. The "serious romantic" subplot. I'm not surprised, for some reason, every god-awful comedy that is released nowadays tacks on a sentimental love sub-plot
3. The "I thought you were gay" angle.... you know, really, how many times has this been done? I see this in almost every TV show in every movie - it's not a big fucking deal. Why not just say "I'm not gay" & put an end to all the needless drama & misunderstandings?, oh wait, I know why - BAD WRITING!

I don’t know exactly who deserves the most blame for this one.

Who's to blame? Easy, studio executives!

When it comes to train-wrecks like these, I'm always tempted to blame the screen-writers. I don't care how talented a director or actor is, you can't make a good movie out of an awful script. But still, while the script may suck, it's the fucking studio executives who decide whether or not to make the film. Anyone could have realized that this movie was bound from the start to suck, but then studio execs got ahold of it & said the following. I'm POSITIVE THIS IS WHAT THEY SAID (we've all heard it before)

"Aston Kutcher is really popular in the 10-20 year-old demographic, especially among females, so we can expect a big opening weekend because of his high-profile on Punk'd and because of his relationship with Demi Moore. That & comedies like these are cheap to make, so we'll bound to turn in a modest profit, & if it doesn't make a profit in theatres, then it will when the film comes out on VHS or DVD. Oh excuse me, that's my cell phone, I have to touch base with Marci & Todd over Double Expressos & tofu at one o'clock about the new Britney- oh where is my head, that was last year - Hillary Duff vehicle, we're hoping to ship $10 million in merchandise as part of any advertising blitz. ciao ciao love, we'll do lunch!"

My friend wants to see this, so I will sit through it tomorrow night. It will probably suck, but there is nothing else out worth seeing anyways, except for American Splendor, which I already have tickets for on Saturday. Check back for a review.

I knew that people over the age of...say...19 would not like this film at all. But since I am in the age demographic I really enjoyed it and so have all my friends that have seen it. And when I saw it again today, I still enjoyed it, and so did the packed (nearly sold-out) theater full of people, who were laughing at every joke.

Meanwhile, it is actually showing pretty "decent" legs at the box office. I mean, it had a mediocre opening but eased only around 30% the second weekend, which means it could make it to around $20 million domestically. Not great but not as awful as MARCI X.

This was a decently funny movie. There were a few laugh out loud moments, but there were mostly chuckles. I liked the setup, and I liked the characters. Asthon Kutcher was great as usual, and Tara Reid is extremely hot. It is worth seeing, but don't expect too much.

Considering the weak per screen average and poor box office, it's hard to believe there are nearly sold out showings of this. And it may have held well because of the long weekend, or because it opened so low. I agree with your point regarding age though. There are many movies I'm sure I would have loved at 15, 16, 17 or 18 that I would not feel the same way about now. It is certainly not a bad thing. But my taste has changed drastically over the years.

It will definetely make it's budget back at the box office (it cost $14 million and has made $11 million so far), but will not make enough to be considered a "hit" for Dimension Films.
