Thoughts? Ugh. This one looks truly, truly awful, from the unfunny hip hop spoofs to Kudrow's grating voice. I'll DEFINITELY skip it.

I really like Lisa Kudrow but this movie does look pretty awful...

I may rent it sometime if I'm in a hurry and can't find anything else...

It's obvious this will get bad reviews, but I really like Lisa Kudrow and while some of the gags look life they fail, the movie still looks amusing. I can't help but be reminded of how A View From The Top looked. I'm especially reminded of that movie during the part in the trailer/TV spots where Kudrow is walking up the stairs with all of those other women that look like they stepped off the plane from A View From A Top.

Anyway, even if the jokes fail for the most part, I still don't think it looks boring or anything, and will definitely give it a shot on video.

Trailer made me want to shoot myself, and I already hate movies with hiphop themes.

Or, I'm gonna pray that this movie bombs and will be forgotton soon.

Oy vey...

I'd rather eat my penis than sit through this piece of donkey poo. Is it just me or are Kudrow (age 40) and Wayans (age 43) WAY too old to be playing these roles?

MARCI X

Well, when I saw that horrible poster for the first time I knew this movie was going to bomb, was going to be hated and was going to get horrible reviews by all the critics. And I said to myself that I will never see it. Then, one night, I was very bored and decided to check out the trailer. And actually, it didn't look so bad. I mean, it still looked like a very very poor and unfunny movie, but maybe a good rental. And I just love Lisa Kudrow, she's hilarious in every movie she's in. She was the only good part of shitty movies like LUCKY NUMBERS and ANALYZE THIS/THAT(Don't remember which one was the sequel). But I know she's an excellent actress, she's not only Phoebe fron TV series F.R.I.E.N.D.S., she proobed that in the amazing THE OPPOSITE OF SEX. So I have one more reason to see this upcoming movie, I mean, I know it looks horrible and it'll probably be. But It also looks like harmless fun for a boring afternoon/night.

The trailer was pretty good, way better than I expected. Lisa Kudrow seemed to have good 'chemistry' with Damon Wayans, he's pretty funny too, although it's not one of my favourite actors...After seeing the trailer I can tell how hated this movie is gonna be, but I migh end up enjoying it, I liked a lot of bad movies. The knly thing I know for sure is that I will see this, at the theater or on video, but I'll see it some way. Not that I'm desperate about it. It looks like an average 5/10 (C) to me.

Again, it's an R-rated comedy. Admitted there are some successful and entertaining comedies rated R, but in a year where PG-13 is as far as has been reached for comedies and especially when the movie looks so terrible, I smell the biggest flop since...Well, Gigli.

Fortunately, this is FAR less hyped, so perhaps it will die quietly. I feel bad for Kudrow, since I think she's capable of giving a solid, comedic or even dramatic performance.

...but....'shop til you drop'...really...ugh...

I kind of want to see this movie, but will probably wait until video. I love Lisa Kudrow, and it may sound lame, but the line in the ads where she goes "My aunt Ester" always makes me laugh.

I mean in Bringing Down The House their lame ass hip hop phrases were sorta up to date, but Word To Your Mother and Gangsta have been passe for 10 years. This will be the worst movie of the year and will flop worst than Gigli.

This movie looks dreadful, I'm sure it will be dreadful, and I'm absolutely positive that I will NEVER watch this movie!

Hell, if Lisa Kudrow thinks that (as soon as "Friends" is over) she's going to survive in the business by doing such shitty-looking flicks like "Marci X", she's sadly mistaken.

This looks rather terrible but I'd actually rather see this than The Medallion but I'll likely see both anyway. It will flop but nobody will care when it does because it has little to no hype. Wasn't this movie actually completed like three years ago and then it sat on the shelf until now? Does anyone know if that is correct?

This will be this year's Pluto Nash, but with a smaller budget and less hype.

It will open terribly and die quitely and quick.

Here's a positive review of the film by Steve Rhodes, a member of the OFCS:

Since Richard Benjamin's MARCI X opens with the cheesiest title sequence in some time, you will immediately begin asking yourself whether the movie will be pathetically bad or so bad that it's good. Although it never shines enough to be something worth recommending, it does turn out to be a passable spoof.

When we meet Marci Feld (Lisa Kudrow), she is addressing a large Jewish charitable organization in a lavish setting at the Waldorf Astoria. "You Jews," she says to them with a stupid grin. "You wonderful Jews. Who needs Santa Claus, right?"

Soon, however, the Feld family empire will go into a steep decline when Senator Mary Ellen Spinkle (Christine Baranski, the reporter in CHICAGO) goes on the attack against Dr. S (Damon Wayans), the gangsta rap star of Felony Assault Records, which just happens to be owned by the Feld family of companies. Dr. S is the author of such songs as "Kill The Teacher" and "The Power In My Pants." Marci's father (Benjamin) promptly has a heart attack upon hearing the news.

It falls on Marci, a classic Jewish princess, to save the day. Drawing upon her reserves -- after all, Time Magazine did call her, the "most charming white woman in America under the age of fifty" -- she takes on Dr. S on his home turf, a big rap concert. In a silly white suit that looks straight out of the 1960s, Marci gets on the stage to out rap the big rapper. Her cute musical number, "The Power In My Purse," turns out to be a real crowd-pleaser and is easily the best part of the movie.

You've got to give this to Kudrow, she is pretty brave to let it all hang out the way she does in MARCI X. The film is close to being an embarrassment, but she single-handedly almost turns the film around. A few missteps from her, and the movie could have been material for worst picture of the year lists.

MARCI X runs 1:30. It is rated R for "language and sexual content" and would be acceptable for teenagers.

I for sure will be seeing this film soon because it looks okay, dumb sure, but okay. If I don't see it this weekend it's likely that I won't be able to catch it in theatres as it will probably be gone in a flash.

this film opened up on friday TERRIBLY (as expected) with $243 per screen average...opened up with $292,000 on 1200 screens...

how bad is that?if you gave a film like thirteen,or le divorce for example a 1200 screen theater count,it definetly would do better then this one...

The Real Cancun was a low-budget film without the hastle of sets, effects, and paying off big-name actors...

This piece of crap actually cost $20M !! Wish I had a slice of the pie that they wasted on something that nobody will see...The $800,000 opening is probably the worst wide release opening I seen in ages...

Swept away cost about $10 million and took $600,000 at the us box office. Pretty bad to be sure but the fact it had a low budget means it wasn't a disaster on the scale of pluto nash or cutthroat island

Taken from Pluto Nash's trivia page at IMDB:

"In absolute terms, this movie made the largest financial loss of any movie to date, with a budget of $100 million and a total US gross of $4.41 million (total loss, $95.59 million)."

Lynn Minmei

This cost at least $40 mil to make, and will make less than $1 million in total US gross. That puts it losing less than Pluto Nash, btu still one of the biggest bombs of this year.

I dunno how much it made back from national tickets, video rentals and purchases, but I checked it out on video and it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen -- and Marci X would probably make it look like a gem to me, if that tells you anything.

Marci X
Release Date: August 22, 2003

As the summer movie season grinds to a halt for the year of 2003, it's now time to focus on the issues of the day. This weekend saw the opening of Richard Benjamin's film starring "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow and comedian Damon Wayans about two people from different worlds coming together and learning a little about one another, while teaching us all valuable lessons about ourselves.

Yeah, you're right. I can't fool you. The film of which I speak is Marci X, and "awful" isn't strong enough a word. Here's the rundown.

Jewish-American Princess Marci Feld (Kudrow) is the socialite daughter of media mogul Ben Feld (director Richard Benjamin), a man who's riding high on his success until the curtain comes down when a hip-hop recording label he didn't even know he owned comes under fire from the censorship elite. The elder Feld is co-targeted alongside the label's number-one act, the nasty-as-he-wanna-be Dr. S (Wayans). As news hits of Congressional obscenity charges against Feld, the stress of the ordeal puts him in the hospital and Marci to work on making Dr. S more palatable for the American mainstream.

Marci's task is an uphill battle, as Dr. S' die-hard gangsta ways are not soon tamed. Also digging potholes in the road for Marci is Sen. Mary Ellen Spinkle (Christine Baranski, Chicago), who leads the charge against her father and Dr. S; Tubby (), the incarcerated founder of Dr. S' label who disapproves of Dr. S' association with Marci, and Latina diva Yolanda Quinones (Paula Garces, Timestoppers) originally poised to be paired with the rapper as a "power couple."

Where to begin.

Many could point out the severe predictability of this movie. Some could veer more towards the low-grade performances from the cast. Not to mention the badly-written dialogue, the stereotypical characters, or that even the fact that this film isn't supposed to be taken seriously can't save it from being a horrible waste of time and money that'll guarantee Blockbuster Video occupied shelf space for months to come.

My opinion is simply "All that and so much more."

Expectations should be very low on this film, and even at rock bottom, you'll be hard-pressed not to walk out before the first thirty minutes (as did one of the only other two audience members where I saw it). Probably the most annoying factor in this flick was Lisa Kudrow's constantly accompanying chorus line of dilettante yes-girls (Viva Rock Vegas' Jane Krakowski, Two Weeks' Notice's Veanne Cox, and the heretofore virtually unknown Sherie Rene Scott) who make even the cast of Sex and the City seem grounded in reality. And anyone expecting the Lisa Kudrow of the Analyze This movies or the Damon Wayans of (insert any of his films here) can put those hopes to merciful sleep; Kudrow's Marci Feld is Phoebe from "Friends" without the likeability and Wayans' Dr. S., while having some fair chuckles in the raunch department, came off as a silly caricature.

Was there anything good about this film? Well, there were two attempts by Lisa Kudrow to display her rapping skills, which will make you laugh or groan depending on how much sugar you've have before hitting the theater.

Beyond that? No.

The 411 .::. Bad. Plain and simply bad. Never let it be said I don't crawl in the trenches for 411, because I needed a shower and sandblasting after Marci X. While I doubt (and would hope) this film doesn't tank the burgeoning film careers of Kudrow and Wayans, because we've seen much better from them, it should be the hope of every moviegoer (especially those who subject themselves to this silver-screen atrocity) that they attach themselves to a much better script. Bottom line: avoid this movie at all costs.

Final Score: 0.5
