I was reading Joblo's review of Open Range , I noticed he wrote this : "Here’s hoping that this film becomes one of the sleeper hits of this mostly shitty summer movie season."

Well , I completely disagree , I believe this is one of the best summer movie seasons ever !

Maybe it's just me , but I had a blast watching Matrix II , The Hulk , Charlies Angels II and especially T3 !!
Heck , I even enjoyed The Bulletproof Monk.
And I still haven't seen Bad Boys II , Finding Nemo, Pirates and Freddy versus Jason. And I heard they're pretty good too.

The only crappy movie I've seen this summer is Legally Blonde II , my girlfriend dragged me to see this pile of sh*t

So , to me , this has to be one of the best summers ever !

I don't think this year's summer blockbusters were any better or worse than in most previous years. He he... I was just about to say that I didn't like the momentary "sequelitis" in Hollywood when I realised that the ONE single outstanding movie among a lots of mediocre flicks, X2 (8/10), was actually a sequel. ;) I didn't care much for most of the other films, though...

~ THE MATRIX RELOADED (5/10)
~ PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN (4/10)
~ TERMINATOR 3 (6/10)
~ THE HULK (6/10)
~ FREDDY VS. JASON (2/10)

Haven't seen CHARLIE'S ANGELS II, TOMB RAIDER II, and BAD BOYS II 'cause I didn't like the first parts.

I can see why Joblo dubbed it a "mostly shitty summer season". Disappointments (for me, anyway) included

"The Matrix Reloaded" (6/10)
"Hulk" (6/10), which also dropped like an anvil and grossed just $130 million...
"Spy Kids 3-D" (5/10)
"Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" (4/10), which also performed way under expectations at the box office...
"LXG" (4/10)

And I didn't see the critically maligned "Bad Boys II", "Legally Blonde 2", or "Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life" (which did especially poorly).

On the flipside, some of my favorites of the summer were "Finding Nemo" (8/10), "Terminator 3" (7/10) and "Pirates of the Caribbean" (7/10). My favorite film of the whole season was probably "X2" (8/10), and that also happened to be the first movie of the summer. Funny how that happened.

Just another lackluster summer.

I will admit this summer is not nearly as good as last summer, but I still think it turned out really good. There have been much, much worse summers then this one.

This year was just like the summers of the last 10 years for me. A few bright spots (X2, Terminator 3, Bad Boys 2), a few decent movies (The Matrix Reloaded, SWAT, Pirates of the Caribbean), and some generic movies (Tomb Raider 2, The Italian Job).

I was kinda irritated by the constant sequels, but I've been satisfied with what I've seen this summer. Luckily I avoided all the shitty ones though

Summer movies have sucked for a few years now. Take a look at a decade ago. Here's some of the Summer 1993 hit movies:

Jurassic Park
The Firm
In the Line of Fire
The Fugitive
Cliffhanger
Sleepless in Seattle
Dave
Menace II Society
Free Willy
Made in America
Poetic Justice
Rookie of the Year
The Secret Garden

Of course this is also the summer that produced Last Action Hero and Super Mario Bros., but every summer has its bombs. This summer's movies can't compare.

Only seen 5 summermovies of 2003 from which I disliked two of them. That doesn't mean much, but since I haven't been orgasming over many of them and that most buzz seems to be bad, I'll agree on the shitty summerseason remark.

I loved this summer, Freddy vs Jason, The Matrix Reloaded, and T3 are my favorite movies this year.

Last years summer produced some more Oscary-worthy type films, which I'm not complaing. This summer, I found, was just for having fun. It wasn't shitty, not amazing, but fun.

Pretty much every movie i was looking forward to this summer has ended up being disapointing. X2, Finding Nemo and T3 were all excellent and some of the others were decent but overall this summer has pretty much sucked movie-wise. Last year was much better.

This summer is pretty along the lines of average and shitty. A few decent movies (Pirates of the Caribbean, Seabiscuit, T3), a few mediocre ones (Charlie's Angels 2, 28 Days Later, Spy Kids 3-D), and some godawful ones (The Hulk, The Italian Job, S.W.A.T., Wrong Turn, etc.).

Yeah, 2001's awful summer was worse than this one, but this one isn't exactly good. I think it's been a very sub-par year for film so far, hopefully it'll get good as Oscar season heats up!

I don't think JoBlo ever reviewed Seabiscuit did he? I wonder if he saw it. I thought that was a really good summer movie. Initially I thought this summer wasn't too bad because there were a few movies I thought were great like Finding Nemo, Seabiscuit, The Italian Job, 28 Days Later and American Wedding. There were also some movies that I thought were good summer fun like Terminator 3, Pirates of the Caribbean, SWAT, Bruce Almighty and Hollywood Homicide. But after looking at FeverDog's list from 1993, I started to get pretty jealous and hope we can get a solid lineup like that in the years ahead.

It's hard to find a summer that can even compare to the disappointment after disappointment that Hollywood provided that year.

Alot of those movies did make a hell of alot of money (Jurassic Park III, American Pie 2, and The Fast and the Furious), but there were just as many that bombed ( Ghosts of Mars, The Forsaken, Josie and the Pussycats)

Yeah, every summer has its share of duds. Besides Last Action Hero and Super Mario Bros., the Summer of '93 also gave us Sliver, Hocus Pocus, Another Stakeout, Dennis the Menace, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Son in Law, My Boyfriend's Back, Jason Goes to Hell, and - eek! - Father Hood.

The 2003 summer movie season hasn't been great, but I do believe it's been a fun time. There's been a lot of awesome popcorn flicks (Bad Boys II, X2, The Italian Job) , one great sci-fi flick (The Matrix Reloaded), and one kick-ass fantasy/adventure (Pirates of the Carribbean). But just like every summer, there's the disappointments (The Hulk, Tomb Raider 2), and the plain bad (LXG, 2 Fast 2 Furious).

Summer 2003 has been all about having a good time, and it delivered for the most part.

Excellent analysis, people. Summers of late have been incredibly brutal in terms of quality when you consider the money expended. Especially compared to the 80s...I'm not sure when things took a hard right turn, but I remember enjoying the fuck out of '89, 91, and 93...And not a hell of a lot since. Maybe my tastes have changed, but I look forward to fall/winter films a hell of a lot more now.

I've enjoyed most of this summer's movies. It hasn't been a great summer but lot's of enjoyable movies.

I agree with JoBlo with the "shittiest movie summer." i am not a big "MOVIE BLOCKBUSTER" fan so i don't usually send my approval out to movies like THE HULK and CHARLIES ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE. The only movie I am really looking forward to is MATCHSTICK MEN and that comes out in September. I probably wouldn't dub this the WORST movie summer, but it might be up there. I mean, if you need anything to validate it, just watch GIGLI.

i actually thought this summer season of movies was damn alright....a big portion of that goes to the fact that Freddy Vs. Jason came out,but with the flicks I have seen this summer, like SWAT, F Vs J they were both top summer flicks...but then again im one who is still remembering earlier 2003 releases like Dark Blue,Willard...

Not that shitty, there have been alot of sequels and prequels ... but also some cool ideas like Freddy Vs Jason, a good drama Seabiscuit and a particularly nice third installement in the terminator franchise T3: Rise Of The Machines.

I thought this was a great summer movie season. The only films I saw that I didn't enjoy were SPY KIDS 3D, DOWN WITH LOVE, DADDY DAY CARE, LXG and THE HULK. Everything else I had a blast viewing, and there was really no other movie I didn't enjoy (and trust me, I saw everything!). Personal favorites of the summer are as follows:

1) CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE
2) PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
3) FINDING NEMO
4) FREAKY FRIDAY
5) THE ITALIAN JOB
6) X2: X-MEN UNITED
7) AMERICAN WEDDING
8) BRUCE ALMIGHTY
9) S.W.A.T
10) LEGALLY BLONDE 2

Other things seen this summer include:
THE MATRIX RELOADED, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS, HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE, RUGRATS GO WILD, TERMINATOR 3, BAD BOYS II, TOMB RAIDER 2, SEABISCUIT, SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS, UPTOWN GIRLS

And all of those were good movies as well.

Overall, I'd say this has been a great summer.

This summer has been all about popcorn flicks which are sequals of popcorn flicks. Not the best summer ever, but I think there were some bright spots in there -- Matrix Reloaded (10/10), Freddy vs. Jason (7/10), The Italian Job (8/10), and Pirates of the Carribean. I haven't seen that many movies this summer (including The Hulk), so maybe I just picked wisely for the most part, skipping the ones that just look shitty (i.e. How to Deal, From Justin to Kelly...,etc).

I agree with all of you on the 2001 summer season -- what the hell, was that really summer?! it seemed to have never existed at all...

I think it's been quite lackluster this summer. I haven't seen many movies (I'm very choosy), but I've liked most of what I've seen. The two exceptions were Matrix: Reloaded, and POTC. Both of those were all hype, no substance. I have enjoyed Legally Blonde 2, Finding Nemo, Open Range, and was mildly happy with T3.

But nothing else could even get me to the theater.

Of all the movies I saw this summer, I was pleased with most all of them. Granted, I was working at a summer camp for most of the summer, and so I didn't see alot. And I spent a lot of theater time rewatching films I loved.

My summer movie report card:
LOVED:
X2(saw it twice)
Finding Nemo(twice as well)
Pirates of the Caribbean(watched it four times)
T3(very pleasantly surprised)
Whale Rider
28 Days Later(freaky cool)
Bend it Like Beckham
ENJOYED, BUT NOT BLOWN AWAY:
American Wedding
MADE FOR AN OKAY RAINY AFTERNOON:
Sinbad(There were things I hated baout this, but ultimately all the mythology, which I really dig, won me over)
HATED:
LXG

To me it was just a typical summer really. Nothing TOO outstanding, but not bad movies either. I enjoyed the bulk of what I watched, but no more than I normally do. There were a lot good movies, a lot of SHIT I didn't/wouldn't go see. But overall, I was happy with the summer, it was exactly what I have come to expect of the summer releases, not that a break out GREAT movie wouldn't be appreciated however.
