View Full Version : Silent Hill - a game from horror fans?

I`ve just been thinking about it after reading all sorts of stuff about Silent Hill games. The game has so many hints and nods to horror, mystery and sci-fi movies and books, that the creators just have to be true horror fans.
The nods I`ve gathered:
The streets in Silent Hill games are all named after mystery, horror, sci-fi writers. Stephen King, Ray Bradbury just to name some of the most known.
A character Sybil Bennett is named after a person Agatha Christie dedicated her book Death on the Nile to.
The main influence for the game had been Jacob`s Ladder and the whole game series is a big nod to that movie.
Has anyone something to add...?

Well I don't have anything else to add but I agree. Man was that game scary! P.S. If you really wanna get creeped out watch it in the dark like around midnight all by yourself.

i have to add that Silent Hill was probably the scariest game i have ever played. i am starting Silent Hill 2 soon. Silent Hill 3 just came out a few weeks ago. They are saying it's the most scary and disturbing one yet. Sounds good to me.
And yes, play them in the dark for full effect. here are some other scary games u might want to try if u haven't already..

Silent Hill series are THE best horror games out there, I finished 1 and 2 with all endings possible. I bought Silent Hill 3 last wednesday and it IS the scariest one ever!! No game OR movie has ever made me turn it off because it was too scary...There is a scene involving a mirror in a hospital that made me shit my pants...almost...hehe..hehe.

I`m getting a little off my own topic, but I just gotta ask more about SH3. I see it is scary. Has it got even better graphics than SH2..? Are there some new cool monsters/weapons...? And is the amount of them bigger..? I just remember Silent Hill 2 had the freakiest monsters I`ve ever seen in a game, but there were just a few different monster types there. Less than in Silent Hill 1.
What are the locations....? Hospital..? School...? Prison...? Amusement Park...?

It sucks because I can never play parts 2 or 3 due to me not having the proper game system. I've seen commericals for 3 and oh man...

*MAY CONTAIN MINIMUM SPOILERS*
Weapons: Basically the same as the other two PLUS: A KICKASS SUB MACHINE GUN!! Cool as hell. Meele weapons include a maze kinda thing, a katana, a kickass flamethrower after you beat the game and more.
Settings: Mall, Hellish mall, Subway Station, Hellish sewer and construction site, Apartment complex, Hellish apartment complex, Hospital, UBER hellish hospital, Hellish Amusement park and UBER Hellish church-like place.
It's a no brainer.

I just read about a couple more references. I don`t have Silent Hill 1 anymore to check it, but they say that there is a door somewhere in the game and it has the word REDRUM written on it in blood. They also say that somewhere should be a poster of the movie "Carrie" hanging on a wall.

So, how about the monsters...? I totally loved some monsters in Silent Hill 2. Especially the nurses, mannequins (sp?), straightjacket monsters, the pyramid head, the big boss in the end and the hanging bed bodies (those in the ceiling). Didn`t like the furniture monsters that much. I`ve seen pictures of Silent Hill 3 and the monsters there didn`t seem quite as cool as the ones of SH2, but I`ve only seen pictures. Any comments?

Monsters are cool, you see your typical nurses, some armless crawling dudes, huge hulking creatures, some dudes that look like PH minus pyramid (they have cool spike like arms), some cancer things that look like an extremely fat person, huge dogs with their heads split in two and there is also, the final boss.

Well, finally finished it with a very satisfying ending.
Wha-? I mentioned the ending on your SH3 thread way over in the vid games forum, and I got to say I completely disagree! What ending did you get? I got what I believe is the NORMAL ending, which was very unsatisfying.
SPOILER, though it certainly isn't revealing anything about the plot, but may indirectly tell you which character(s) survives: In my ending, Heather grieves for her dad (okay, that's cool), she meets up with Douglas . . . and - get this - pretends that she's insane and wants to kill him, only to suddenly back off and announce " I was just joking!" Kind of innaproriate under the circumstances there, don't you think? And the last line? "Blondes have more fun"? What the hell?
As for the monsters in the game, I think SH2 did a better job (and had a better plot). SH3 has some very-lame looking teddy-bear type flesh things . . . sort of indescripable, a large, fat creature that is somewhat menacing, weird scuttling creatures that are very scary, dogs with split heads, very bizarre and threatening spider-things, pathetically ridiculous butcher-type fella' with a big worm on his head,uber-creepy nurses that look a bit like Samara from The Ring . . . and that, ladies and gents, is it. They do not have that eerie "gleam" that the creatures from SH2 do, and most of the designs are so frantic that a general shape never comes out. Of course, they do manage to scare the shit out of you, but that's beside the point . . . so yes, the designs aren't as cool as the second.
Still, the game is worth the price, with great (in a revolting, I-can't-believe-I-just-saw-that kind of way) imagery, much better than SH2. Because hey--where else can you walk into a room with people on hooks and pictures of lips twisted in a scream hanging in front of their faces? Or how about two women throwing up/eating a fetus? It's disgusting, but delivers the chills.

I want to play Silent Hill 3 soooo bad, but I'm still disturbed about Silent Hill 2. I just can't play that game at night. I get way to whacked out about it. I know it's just a game, but I get right into it and it freaks me the fuck out.

Producer Akirhiro Imamura said that the movie that scared him the most was Darui Argento's Suspiria, and that most of the game's influcences came from Argento, Lucio Fulci, and Mario Bava.

I've been playing Silent Hill 3 lately. It's fucking awesome. Believe it or not though... I haven't played any of the others. I just bought a PS2 about a month ago, the first system I've bought since SNES. I haven't even played the Resident Evil games! I've seen them played, but since I didn't have a playstation myself I didn't want to get absorbed and not have a chance to finish. After I finish SH3 though, I'm going to seek out SH1, and I might go ahead and buy a Gamecube because I hear that the remake of the original Resident Evil on that system is much scarier than it was when it came out on PS1. I've also bought Clocktower 3, haven't even popped it in yet though because I want to finish SH3.
Also: That mirrored wall room in the hospital was indeed kickass!
The plot itself is also nothing less than intriguing.

If you`re going to get SH1, be sure to get SH2 too. The first seems rougher to me and the secon brings melancholy to the mix and tries to expand the fear factor to the limits. Also it`s much more disturbing than the first one and the graphics are awsome.
I love both of them.
Only thing I just have to say. I see one problem with SH games. The endings seem not well done. You complete this amazing game with fabulous graphics and great cut-scenes and you get some 30-second long clip with the main character in a boat and someone reading a letter (SH2) or this clip with the main characters endlessly running surrounded by flames with quite bad graphics (SH1)

There are other endings in SH2. The one you mentioned was the worst but the others are great.

Well, I got the same ending, and I found it extremely satysfying, I was glad for them, although I didn't see what would happen later. Heather accepted her true self, mourned over his dad, and the other 'good' character lived. That's totally satisfying if you ask me.
If you thought that wasn't satisfying enough, you clearly haven't seen the real bad endings. Try Silent Hill's "Bad" or "Bad+". or even worse, Silent Hill 2's "In Water". now THOSE are really underwhelming.

Well, I`ve got the other endings too, but all of them could have had better excecutions. I just made that ending as an example. I think the others are kinda underdone too. "In The Water" just has bubbles coming from under water and someone (I don`t remember who, Mary..?) reading the letter. They all are cool, by what they mean and as the ending result, but they could`ve been done a little better (better graphics, longer...)
By the way. I have a question about the endings in Silent Hill 2.
I`ve got "In The Water", "Rebirth" and "Dog". After getting the dog ending I wanted to get the rest of them too. I started the game with difficulty level hard and got to the boat place... (you know SPOILERS....after killing Eddie SPOILERS END) I got into the boat and couldn`t move it. I tried everything. Every singel button in every way, but couldn`t move the boat. I went into load and tried again, went into an earlier save, (SPOILERS) defeated Eddie again(SPOILERS END) and tried again, but nothing ever works. I`m stuck there now. I`ve used the boat earlier, but now can`t. I get into the boat, push every god damn button, but nothing happens. Has this problem occured to anyone else. I`m really pissed.
And I`ve got one question more. In Silent Hill 2, there are many places where sentences have gaps in them. I heard that when you complete the game with every difficulty level, you`ll get the gaps removed and can learn more about the history of Silent Hill and stuff like that. I really wanted to achieve that, but since I can`t complete it with "hard" then is there a site somewhere where I can read all the texts without the gaps....?

WOOOHOOOO!!!!! Yeaaaahhhh!!! I had been stuck with that boat for atleast a year. Now that I brought up the subject here, I tried the game again. I messed around in that boad for about half an hour til I figured out what to do.... I had to use the analog sticks not the buttons. It took some time to get the hang of them, but I finally got past that stupid place.....Woooohoooo!!!
Yet, I still can`t understand why it was so. The previous times I completed the game, I controlled the boat with buttons. Weird.

It's to do with the difficulty level. To make it harder to move the boat you have to move both analog sticks in circular motions.
As for the games, I think they are the best horror games around. The plots just keep you guessing and monsters are shit scary. They even have a grainy effect to give them the horror look.
I completed SH1 about a year ago and got a Good ending and now I'm working thru SH2 now and am almost at the end, I can't stop playing it! I plan on getting SH3 as soon as I've finished this one.

I borrowed Silent Hill 2 from my friend. I'm going through the hospital for the 2nd time right now. It's a great game to, but it's not as good so far as SH3. 3 had more scary images and stuff, the monsters in 2 look freaky, but nothing all that scary has happened yet.

Damn, I thought I was older and past that fase now, but when I played SH2 yesterday at night with headphones on at one point, I just couldn`t keep on playing. I thought that when I`d play some more, I couldn`t go to sleep anymore. I stopped playing, but still couldn`t go to sleep. That was fun....
By the way, can one slice monsters with chainsaw again in SH3 and is SH3 longer than SH2? Silent Hill 2 had a cool half-an-hour making of.. with it, does SH3 have something like that too....?

I finished Silent Hill 2 last night. I got the In Water ending. It definitely would have been cooler to have a longer movie sequence at the end, but I thought that the melancholy sadness of the letter was very cool. I liked it more than the SH 3 ending that was already described earlier.

Xipe, do you know if that dvd is entirely still shots you cycle through, or are there actually some video sequences to watch. An actual documentary on the series would be really cool, but I'm not going to buy something just for still shots with a soundtrack.

I just made it to the motal in Silent Hill (:D ) So I can't really help, but I think that's my next stop.
I would just like to say, that SH 2 and 3 are some of the most amazing games ever created, and the scariest experiences EVER. Far more then any movie (cept' IT and Halloween). I love the games.:D I would love to see these turned into a movie, but done RIGHT.
