I'm definitely happy with Freddy VS Jason's numbers after a very impressive opening weekend as well as Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl and Bad Boys 2 still hanging in there.

and what's the least FvJ can make? and don't tell me 40mil, be
more realistic.

That would be something.

Horror films drop fast and hard, but if Freddy vs. Jason does three times its opening weekend it'll make $100 million or a little more. I can't imagine it making less than $90 million, which very few people expected.

I figure FvJ will probably peter out at around $75, but I'd love to see it hit 100. Hell, I was surprised it hit $40 and it did that in 4 days......As much as I loved this movie, I'm still in shock over the box office totals it achieved....the bad news? make way for a shitload of vs. movies :(

I'm guessing it will finish around 90 million.

I'd say the lowest it could finish at would be around $60 million, maybe even $65, the highest I'd say would be at least $110

What's so wrong with that ? I always wondered how certain movie characters of different movies would interact with each other.

I will assume that Freddy VS Jason will make over 100 million worldwide. The numbers that are in are just the US/Canada totals, but you really can't judge the success of a film just based on those totals. Freddy VS Jason will be one of the most suprising successes this year.
Jon Lyrik
08-21-2003, 08:40 AM
I'm positive Freddy vs. Jason will have a 60-65% drop.
I see FREDDY vs. JASON making 80-90 Million...
But in other news, THIRTEEN grossed a very nice $12,513 on Wednesday from only 2 theaters, which gives it a superb per-screen average of $6,256. This weekend it looks like it should see a per-screen average of at least $19,000. This means it will definitely expand some, but how well it performs with the more mainstream audiences as it's rolling out is what will determine how wide it goes. I just hope it goes wide enough to play around me. If Better Luck Tomorrow can get put in a good chunk of theaters (although they released this one way too wide too quick, which is why it failed to do anything when it added a shitload of theaters), then Thirteen should get that many too.

Dear lord, MARCI X tanked...Something from the ads tells me that it deserves to die a swift box office death...
I am glad to see FREDDY VS. JASON hold up, though. At THE MEDALLION today, I overheard quite a few people asking for a ticket, so you know more than just horror buffs are going to see it. With plenty of support, this ought to pass $100 mil in a few weeks.

Everyone's saying Freddy Vs. Jason held up. I don't concur. It may've kept the #1 spot, but it's going to have a MASSIVE, MASSIVE drop.
I also expected Open Range to hold up better, but it's still a success, and I'm glad Costner has had a career boost.
Uptown Girls held up well... YAY! :)
As for Marci X, I am not sure whether to cry for it's producers, or laugh at it.
I wouldn't get all that happy about FREDDY VS. JASON. Yes, it WILL be #1, but come on, look at the competition. I think it was rather obvious it would keep the #1 spot. But it's still going to have a BIG drop. It has done extremely well for itself though, and if the amount it has grossed now would have been its final take, I still would have been happy, so you can't ask for much more.
HOLY SHIT did MARCI X BOMB!!! I mean, I expected it to do awful, but it couldn't even make it near my Friday prediction of 1.1 Million, and hell, it won't even make as much as GRIND did. That's just AWFUL. If it can make it to 1 Million for the weekend, it will be lucky.
Man, the Friday numbers pretty much suck and sadly, mean that summer is officially over.
Here were my predictions for the new movies opening this weekend:
THE MEDALLION
Friday - 4.8 Million
Saturday - 4.8 Million
Sunday - 3.8 Million
Total - 13.4 Million
MY BOSS'S DAUGHTER
Friday - 3.4 Million
Saturday - 3.3 Million
Sunday - 2.4 Million
Total - 9.1 Million
MARCI X
Friday - 1.1 Million
Saturday - 1.3 Million
Sunday - 0.9 Million
Total - 3.3 Million
Some good did come out of Friday though. THIRTEEN grossed $38,000 on only 5 screens for a sizzling per-screen average of $7,600. It looks to gross over $100,000 for the weekend. VERY NICE!

Marci X should find its way to the video shelves in about two months. But no box-office bomb can top It's Pat: The Movie, which grossed a pathetic $64,000 at the U.S box-office.

I don't why some people are so down on F vs. J's second weekend because it is going to end up making more in its second weekend than dh predicted it would its first weekend. New Line Cinema likely knew that it was a one and done film, severely frontloaded, so I'm sure that they are extremely happy that their film many were dismissing is going to be the number one film the country two weeks in a row. Heck, the film will more than double its 30 million budget. I think that it any film would be happy with that result. So, while some may think that the 2nd weekend drop is bad, the film is still a huge hit and one of the surprises of the summer; successfully revitalizing two franchises that were on the brink of extinction.

It's not bad, just expected for a horror movie/sequel/gimmick (VS.) movie... It was frontloaded, as expected. It's still a very big hit for what it is.

YES! freddy vs jason at 50 million and #1 still. it's doing great and maybe it could be in the top 3 next week, as jeepers creepers 2 will take a big chunk of it's audience and debut as #1 as it's the only new movie opening next week and it has had a big marketing campaign.
his weeks competiton isn't that bad. Just Married made 15 million in january w/ ashton kutcher in the lead and Chan's movies usually do well. and Gigli must be very graetful for Marci X right now.

I'm surprised that My Boss's Daughter isn't doing better. I thought it would be #1 because of Ashton Kutcher's popularity. It isn't even in the top 5. It is cool to see Freddy Vs. Jason remain on the top spot though.

Weekend Estimates:
1. Freddy vs. Jason NL $13,450,000
2. S.W.A.T. Sony $10,800,000
3. Open Range Dis. $9,383,000
4. Freaky Friday Dis. $9,354,000
5. The Medallion SGem $8,200,000
6. Pirates of the Caribbean Dis. $7,315,000
7. Seabiscuit Uni. $6,335,000
8. Uptown Girls MGM $5,600,000
9. American Wedding Uni. $5,575,000
10. My Boss's Daughter Dim. $5,000,000
17. Marci X Par. $865,000
Freddy Vs Jason did drop huge like all horror movies, but that doesn't deny that it is a monster hit. All three new movies flopped and that's good because they all looked like shit anyway. Thank god for Gigli, that Marci X came out because that has to be one of the biggest flops ever and it will make people forget about Gigli.

Overall, a pretty weak weekend with bad openers. Too bad for MY BOSS'S DAUGHTER. I saw it and actually enjoyed it, and the theater was packed so I expected a bigger opening. It also sucks for MARCI X, which I didn't see, but it must be a huge disappointment for Lisa Kudrow, one of the most talented female comedians.
Good holds for FREAKY FRIDAY, AMERICAN WEDDING, S.W.A.T. and SEABISCUIT. All are locks for $100 million now.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN is still doing extraordinary business and will without a doubt beat THE MATRIX RELOADED. I hope it can make it to $300 million. It deserves it.
I'm also glad CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE didn't drop that hard. It is also now a lock for $100 million, which makes me unbelievably happy. By far the best news of this weekend.

In my opinion, this was one of the most predictable weekends of the summer movie season. The massive drop for Freddy Vs. Jason. The mediocre opening of The Medallion. The awful openings of My Boss's Daughter and, especially, Marci X, but it did have some suprises, IMO, mainly the 2nd weekend drop of the wonderful Uptown Girls, I was truly hoping W.O.M. would help it, but I presume not enough people saw it for it to truly spread. Also, whilst Open Range did have a nice drop, I was expecting something in the 20% range.
P.S. I actually think Grind did fairly well in it's second weekend. Sure, it had a large drop, but with so much bad press and the awful opening, I was expecting something above 70%, a la From Justin To Kelly.

A pretty subpar weekend for movies, no doubt. People probably were wise enough to stay away from the new crop of shit and see holdovers.
Freaky Friday is doing very well, and I'm glad that word of mouth kicked in. People I know who've seen it have loved it, and recommended it to their friends. Sleeper hit of the summer, I would say.
Marci X: all I have to say is, OUCH! That's freakin' pathetic...

This weekend was mostly expected except that I thought that MBD would perform better (It deserved to because it's quite humorous). The Medallion actually performed worse than I thought it would but it deserved to do poorly because it was rather bad. Marci X also deserved to fail, which it did. It was so incredibly terrible. It is the first movie in a long time that I contemplated walking out on. I ended up staying the entire movie but it was a bad experience because the film was unfunny and offensive at the same time. What a complete dud that really should have gone direct to video, Paramount could have saved money by doing so anyway.

The Battle of Shaker Heights did pretty decent. It grossed an estimated $52,000 from 5 theaters, giving it a per-screen average of $10,400.
To me, this was by far the best thing to come out of the Box Office this weekend.
This is from Box Office Guru:
Debuting to sparkling results in limited release was Fox Searchlight's teen angst pic Thirteen which grossed an estimated $112,000 from only five theaters for a robust $22,443 per venue. The R-rated entry played in New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto and has collected $136,000 since Wednesday. This Friday, Thirteen expands into 50-60 theaters for the Labor Day holiday period.
