This is great news and I'm glad it's all going ahead...if this movie's half as good as the other Burton/Depp flicks, we'll be in for a major treat. Fantastic news...

He was my #1 choice in the old "Predict who'll play Wonka thread" and it's now official! Yes! Excellent choice. Depp, over the years, has proven to be one of the most versatile actors out there, just look at 3 of his films: Ed Wood, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, and, his best performance, IMO, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and you'll know that for a fact. He'll be an excellent Willy Wonka, and the film, as a whole, should prove to be amazing...

This is terrible news. I'm actually gutted that these two twits are disturbing the film (whether or not they are staying closer to the 'source' book than the previous mini-masterpiece - which I am aware the Dahl family hated). I say a flogging is in order....

this is the best news i've heard in a long time.
Brilliant casting.
I haven't been this happy with a casting choice since Ian McKellen was chosen to play Gandalf.
You know, it was about three years ago when I watched Willy Wonka and realised how much potential the original book had if Tim Burton got his hands on the rights...Now, my filmic dream has come true - He's directing and one of my all time favourite actors is starringn (never thought of Depp in the role though).
Edward Scisorhands is amongst the greatest fantasy films ever made (LOTR, The Wizard of Oz etc). Hopefully the Burton/Depp team can make pure cinema magic once again. I think they will.
He was my second choice after Chris Walken...it should still be awesome, though.

doesn't change the fact that this is a completely unnecessary remake. Come on, Tim Burton, don't you have any original ideas?

It doesn't mean he has the part yet, he was offered. Doesn't mean he'll take it. But it's an interesting casting idea, though I would've preferred Walken

Johnny Depp is honestly one of the best actors out there right now...
Nothing like a remake to a hilarious movie!

Why? Because the book's excellent, but the first film's mediocre.

Yeah, I thought Chris Walken would have been the ideal choice to play Willy Wonka. Hell, can you imagine how perfect he would look in the purple outfit? Still, if the news is true, I'm satisfied with Burton's selection (he has my faith), Johnny Depp is a brilliant and extremely versatile actor. And if he can be one of the greatest pirates ever, than I believe he can become the crazy candyman creator/inventor as well.

I don't see the need to remake such a classic, but if it has to be done, there is no other director/actor combination that i would rather see then Burton and Depp.

Ah but we are all forgetting the all important question: Who will play the Umpa-Lumpa's? I mean they just can use Mini-me a thousand times. . .hey wait, I could be on to something here.
OMG - Richard Gear singing was scary enough? Will Dep practice for "Land of Pure Imagination?" Will they dub James Earl Jone's voice over mini-me's for the Umpa-Lumpa song?

Those two are a dangarous combination!
Depp and Burton are amazing, I hope Elfman is up for the score.
This really is excellent news!

One thing to consider is that they're following the book more than the movie, so the Umpa-Lumpas will be more fairy like than the original's interpretation. Which brings up a whole mess of possibilities

Didnt post for a long time since i moved from my shitty island to New York City baby yeah!!!!! I doubt anyone here cares or even knows/remembers me but i just wanted to say that before posting again :)
Anyway,
Depp was one of the only good things in Pirates... he was amazing and showed that he can play wacky characters really really well. I still think Walken could of been better to play Wonka but hey..Burton and Depp work really well together. Burton is the perfect choice for this kinda movie so it wont be that bad plus Depp is an awesome actor anyway.

Ok I love the casting that has gone on here, but since everone knows that Walken is a song and dance man at heart don't you'se guys think he could have another part in this flick? Maybe the grandpa or somethin? I mean I don't really care if he's the guy at the fuckin candy store but I think the man should be somewhere in this flick.
