View Full Version : I got an Idea!

I was reading the 'I hate scratches' thread in the DVD section just moments ago, and I saw 'two' people got the boot from the boards. So I thought to myself "why did they get banned? what for?"

So I was thinking, if JoBlo could make a 'special' thread where he posts all the names of the schmoes who got the boot out of here. And tell the reason...

I.e.

John Doe 298 - "Disrespecting other schmoes (cussing at them etc..)"

I think that would be a cool thread that you could check once in a while and see the reasons why they got banned. Just out of curiousity you know?

I don't think this is a good idea at all, I'm sorry. Not only is it disrespecting the privacy of the dear departed, but it really isn't our business why suchandsuch got banned. The only time I'll care to know why someone got banned, is if it's me ;)

it's an interesting idea, but i agree with annie. it's none of our business.

I agree, bad idea. I can tell you why people get banned .... for being assholes. That's all you need to know.

Well if people are assholes on the board, screw em'. We should humiliate them if every way possible. ;)

Bad idea. We're already not even supposed to talk about banned schmoes anyways. Why does it matter why somebody got banned anyways? They got banned and probably for a good reason, I've never seen anybody get banned for an illegitimate reason here. This could only lead to bad things IMO.

Even though it may be really easy to see why someone got banned from their last posts, this is a bad idea. It takes away privacy, and like everyone says, it's not our business

Really what you want to see is the circumstances under which they were banned...which is also none of our business.

I don't know, I've never really been interested in knowing why schmoes were banned unless they seemed like really nice people. Usually when people are banned, I think "Too bad. That guy was alright".

Geez, I kind of came off as an asshole there myself didn't I?:D Didn't mean to, all I was trying to say is that it's just the same old shit. Insulting a fellow schmoe, making some inappropriate comment, things along those lines. Really no need for much of an explanation, and it's none of our business anyway.

I can see why some folks would be interested in knowing why such-and-such got banned and that it MIGHT have some value, but the negatives of doing something like this, very much outweigh the positives, so we definitely won't be doing this.

It's actually our site's policy NOT to ever discuss cases of banned members with anyone but those banned members, since, as some people already said, it's really just something between us.

It also leads to much bitching back and forth about what others think of the issue and a lot of times, it's more involved than just one thing (I've been known to go back and forth with some people via email...) It would also be somewhat disrespectful to the "dearly departed" and I try, to the best extent possible, to practice what I preach.

I myself, have got a list of every single person who has been banned on this board since 1999, by name, email, date of banning and reasons for being banned. The past year has actually been VERY free of your basic types of assholes, but has surprisingly included a LOT of senior schmoes "going bad"...strange.

I guess all we would ask of you is that you trust that we aren't banning folks "for the fun of it" and that they have obviously crossed the line, one way or the other. Our rules are pretty basic (I think), so if someone can't keep within that, we will exercise our right to withdraw our invitation for them to join our movie board discussions.

Most of the time, you can actually see their issues by clicking on the SEARCH button under their message and reading through some of their last posts. Other times, it's a deeper issue that might not be obvious to some.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that posting on our board is actually a PRIVILEGE and not a RIGHT, and that once you are banned, we DO NOT allow you back on. Lots of folks think we're joking around when we say that, tell me to "fuck off" (or a semblance thereof) when they do get banned, but then inevitably write me back a week or two later, apologizing and asking to come back on because they "liked our board better than any other", etc... (not touting our horn, just being honest-- this happens in 80% of the cases)

It won't happen at that point.

Naw I didn't mean it like an 'open' thread. Just posting names and the reason. But it's coo it's the poilicy not to.

Yeah, that was part of my "Operation Replace JoBlo" conspiracy...didn't work as well as expected. My bad. ;)

On a more serious note (because that up there was a joke, huh...don't send the Agents!), I don't think a thread about banned people would be a smart idea. It'd just cause chaos and mayhem (I like those words). I respect JoBlo's stance on not discussing such issues, I think it's a smart decision -- and besides, if you really wanna know who was banned, why and when, it's not THAT tough to find out.

Yeah, I'm a little curious about why so many Senior Schmoes are "going bad". After all that time, most people should know how to act.

I think it's a bad idea, because it's only purpose is to demean people. Joblo isn't running this board with the goal of humiliating and demeaning people. People get banned in an effort to make the board run smoother. It has little to do with name calling, personality conflicts and other such pety things. Granted, those things lead to a bannings, but it isn't as if Joblo has specific reasons for banning people. You pull thorns out of your side not because you hate rose bushes, but because thorns hurt.

If that makes sense, you get the point.

In short, I think people being banned is contrary to the boards purpose, but a necessary evil.

Parading around those who were banned, is just a waste of time, and contrary to the boards purpose, which is to discuss movies.

I didn't say a whole hell of alot that wasn't said before, but this topic was of special interest to me.
