There is a film festival running here in my home town and they are showing German horror classics. I really wanted to see Golem, but I didn`t know they were showing it til the next day. Anywho, I went to see Nosferatu (1922) yesterday and am hungry for more. The bad thing is I have to choose between two movies and I have to choose it during the next 7-8 hours.
So, should I go and see

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

or

The Haunted Castle (1921).

I haven`t seen neither and it`s pretty hard to choose.

Maybe this subject should be in Past Horror or something, but I just want some advice during this short period of time and since most of the schmoes tend to go online after about 9-10 hours, I need all the traffic I can get and General Horror deffinetly has more and the subject also kinda fits here. After that period of time, I have nothing against this thread being moved or even deleted.

From the info I`ve gathered by myself so far, I think I`m gonna go with Dr. Caligari. I read that the other one was just some Agatha Christhie type murder mystery.

Well I don't really know the german movie,overall however I strongly recomand u the oustanding M ( Fritz Lang ) or Doctor Mabuse ( Lang,too )
Otherwise Metropolis ( Lang ,again ) is also a very good movie.
Otherwise u have the very good Anatomy ( german slasher )

They just have from the 20`s and 30`s and only about 6 different movies. The reason why I have to choose is also an annoting and frustrating one - financial problems. From the ones mentioned by you I think they are only showing one that has a resembling title, Testament of dr. Mabuse (1933), but I think I can`t go and see that one. I have some obligantions at the pecific time, they`re showing it so I think I`ve got to go with Dr. Caligari.

Well, I went and saw the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Though it wasn`t as good as Nosferatu, it was a very good movie. They don`t make them like that anymore. The thing that surprised me though is that the movie was excactly like the video of Rob Zombie`s "Living Dead Girl". The movie was filled with scenes very very similar to the video. Even some of the costumes and sets were identical. I thought Rob made his video look like a silent movie, not make it a homage to a specific movie. That was a pleasent surprise.

I wish I could have gotten to this thread earlier. I'm glad you enjoyed Nosferatu and Caligari. I, too, prefer the former, but I love them both. The "Living Dead Girl" video is scrumptious, and as you mentioned, you have to admire Rob's authenticity. For those unaware, the title girl in "Living Dead Girl" was played by none other than Sheri Moon.

Yes, Sheri Moon appears to be in every Rob Zombie`s video, plus multiple cd covers and not to forget his directional debut, House of 1000 Corpses.

Glad you liked Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, its a classic. Did you notice how the sets were all skewered? They did that to emphazize on Dr. Caligaris insanity. The artistic directors took a lot of liberty in creating a really surreal and strange atmosphere for this flick.

Yeah Rob Zombie borrowed a lot from this film and also White Zombie wich in my opinion is a whole lot more fun...and one of the first zombie movies!

Though if your gonna go fir silent cinema, Id go with Nosferatu wich is a lot better.

I think another good german "horror" film is Ingmar Bergmans The Seventh Seal dont know if that film festival is still up but if you can check that one out, Im sure youll dig it. Its about this soldier who has escaped the hands of death...and death comes knocking at his door. Its the gream reaper dude! Decent film with loads of spooky atmosphere.

You should see another horror classic, the remake of Nosferatu. One of the top creepiest movies I've ever seen.

Weird, I don`t recall having heard anything good about that remake before.

The Nosferatu remake is first-rate horror, and comes close to being my favorite remake of all time. It's nothing but unfiltered atmosphere. If you enjoyed the original, you're sure to lap up Werner Herzog's haunting redux.

Well, maybe I just can`t remember that well. It could`ve been some other movie I`m mixing it up with. My bad. Haven`t seen the movie myself though. I guess I`ll have to check it out one day.
