The plot: Dek and Shirley live together with 12 year-old Marlene, her daughter by the sexy delinquent Jimmy, who skeddadled years ago and hasn't been heard from since. Decent-but-dull Dek loves Shirley, so much so that he humiliates her by proposing without warning on national television. Jimmy sees the TV proposal and returns to town convinced that he can change her mind, however he faces formidable opposition from almost every side.

Since this thread is getting sooo much attention, I'd like to point out that Once Upon a Time in the Midlands is currently sporting at RottenTomatoes a FRESH rating of 63%.

Carry on.

Sounds like a good flick. I'm a fan of Robert Carlyle, so if this comes my way I might give it a look. If not, theres always DVD.

I saw this about a month ago. Superb flick. This is director Shane Meadows' third feature length movie and it keeps up the quality he displayed on both his debut, Twenty Four Seven, and his second movie, the utterly superb A Room For Romeo Brass. Once Upon A Time In The Midlands is, typically, a mixture of drama and often bittersweet humour. The acting is first rate right across the board but Robert Carlyle, Shirley Henderson and Rhys Ifans are on particularly good form. I'm sure i've said this before but Shirley Henderson is a national treasure who has yet, in my experience, to give a bad performance. I'd give Once Upon A Time In The Midlands about 4/5 and I think it would appeal to a lot of schmoes who perhaps would, upon reading a quick plot breakdown, think that it wouldn't appeal to them.

I saw Once Upon A Time In The Midlands ages ago because the little girl in it, Finn Atkins, she goes to my school so me and my cousin thought we'd watch it and when we saw it we both though it was pretty decent and also it had some funny moments which is always good.:D
