I think he is a great director. I forgive him for making Killing Me Softly. It'd be nice to see Chen Kaige get mainstream reconnition here in the states, but I love his work just the same. Both The Emperor and The Assassin, which I seem to be the biggest fan of,
and Farewell My Concubine are in my top 10. I think Together is the second best film of the year. I also very much liked Temptress Moon, which I have a 9/10.
What about you guys?

I love the guy, also. I haven't seen Together or Killing Me Softly yet (I'm very reluctant about that latter one). I saw The Emperor and the Assassin and I was floored. Awesome, opulent movie. It's amazing and gorgeous to watch (and... I suppose Gong Li doesn't hurt the flick either). I loved Farewell, My Concubine as well. I saw Temptress Moon and remember I loved it, but I don't really remember the movie as such.
I really wante to see Together, but I hope he gets to direct another Emperor and the Assassin-type movie. Now that Ang Lee and Zhang Yimou have directed some wuxia movie, maybe Mr. Chen will get in on the action?

I dig him a lot as well. Farewell, My Concubine and The Emperor and the Assassin were both superb, beautiful flicks, 9/10's in my book. Killing Me Softly I have avoided since I have heard bad things about it, and Temptress Moon was also also a very good flick, I'd give it a 8/10. Haven't seen Together yet but really want to though.
As I'm posting my housemate just bought me a few films and one of them was Killing Me Softly, isn't that just a coincidence. :) Maybe I'll check it out sometime this week or so....

Just saw Together, and I thought it was good for what it was; a feel-good family film. A touch cringy in parts (the use of lighting in one scene is way ott) but it looks designed to tug at the heart-strings and please the eyes and ears, which it does quite well.
It would have been nice to have seen Chen make something of the interesting scenes where we see the old China clash with the ne, but it wasn't to be. No way near his best work.

The Emperor and the Assassin is the only movie of his i've ever seen but it's near flawless imo. Beautiful film.
