It's that time of the year again---the end of summer. It's always sad to see the Box Office numbers get so low. It just reminds you that summer is officially over :(. Let's all take some time to grieve...

I am truly happy that summer is over! Sure, the box office'll be deader than the people who saw The Medallion for a couple of weeks, but soon, the weekends'll spark up again, and most weekend will have MULTIPLE heavy-hitters, thus it'll be more exciting than: "Oh, one film came out and grossed 66 million.... Yipee."

THANK GOD!

Now that the summer is over, maybe some small movies can make more money, without all those big blockbuster movies.

Unexciting numbers. JC2 is on track for $13-15 million, I'd say...not bad, not very good either.

We're now in the lull between the end of the summer movie season and the beginning of the fall movie season.

This was my original prediction for JC2:

Friday - 5.1 Million
Saturday - 5.0 Million
Sunday - 3.9 Million

Total - 14 Million

Then I decided to change it just a tad to this:

Friday - 5.1 Million
Saturday - 4.9 Million
Sunday - 3.8 Million

Total - 13.8 Million

I'm hoping for my sake that it drops to 4.9 Million on Saturday and then 3.8 Million on Sunday. Otherwise I will kick my ass for lowering Saturday and Sunday from my original prediction.

Friday's numbers weren't all that surprising IMO. JC2 is going to be number one and should make around what the original did while in theatres, maybe a little more or less. I'm betting that the prequel will get made. On another note, Mike your avatar is really cool. Especially the nod to a great show like The O.C.

Thanks! I wanted an avatar for The O.C. ever since I saw the first episode, but I couldn't find any good pics for it. The selection was rather limited. So then I decided to just go with this one, since it's better than nothing and I needed an O.C. avatar.

Not surprising at all though, with JC2 going after the same audience and the zero longevity horror/slasher films regularly show.

This is from Box Office Prophets:

Friday Numbers Analysis
By Tim Briody
August 30, 2003

Jeepers Creepers 2

The sequel to one of the few films to actually break out over the box office dead zone that is Labor Day weekend earned a pretty decent $5.2 million Friday, which is ahead of the $4.3 million the original made its first Friday. Smart money here says that this one is more front-loaded and won't quite make the 3.6 multiplier Jeepers Creepers had over the four-day weekend. Give it $13.5 million for the three-day weekend, and a 3.3 multiplier and $17.4 million for four days, which breaks the Labor Day opening record set two years ago by Jeepers Creepers.

Notable Holdovers

As is the case with this holiday weekend, older films in the marketplace either have a negligible decline (or even a small gain) from last weekend, or collapse completely.

In the first category, we have films that have already shown their legginess during the month of August, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Freaky Friday and Seabiscuit. Each of these films will see drops of under 10% for the four-day weekend.

In the latter category, we have two of last week's openers, The Medallion and My Boss's Daughter, as well as last week's champ, Freddy vs. Jason. Cannibalized by a new horror entry into theaters, the battle of the horror heavyweights will fall from first to sixth at best as it should decline around 50% even over the four-day weekend.

XCoRyX
08-31-2003, 03:48 AM
yeah,it already indeed is a success, and it still has a few more million to make in theaters, and then throw in rentals and sales, and youve got yourselfs a winner folks.

optimus1
08-31-2003, 03:55 PM
It's pretty funny that Kevin Costner has a winner on his hands for the first time in a long while and it will probably not even make 50 million domestically.I guess the key is not paying all the stars of the movie 5 million each or more. Also why is Thirteen not being released to more theaters?

After the four-day weekend, I believe Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, S.W.A.T., Seabiscuit and The Italian Job will have crossed $100 million, with Freaky Friday and American Wedding close behind. Good news for all of these movies, they deserve it.

Freddy Vs. Jason might make it to $85 million, extremely good for a horror film. It deserves the success it is getting, I saw it last night and had a great time at the movies.

My Boss's Daughter didn't fall too hard, which is good news. Hopefully it can at least make $20 million, but I doubt it. That sucks. It was a really funny movie.

Marci X won't even make it to $1.5 million domestically. And some people were predicting more for OPENING WEEKEND than that. It just seems kind of funny.

I don't know about everyone else, but I always had a feeling that FREAKY FRIDAY would make $100+ million. It is just the kind of summer movie that appeals to all audiences and has a good message. I personally loved the film (9/10) and reccomend it to everyone who hasn't seen it.
