I know that this has been asked a bunch of times, but I am going to be getting Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness soon, and each of them have multiple versions I don't know which versions to get. I am pretty sure that I am going to get the Book of the Dead Special Edition of Evil Dead that just came out. Which versions of the other two should I get?

Don't get the book of the dead. It cuts the top of the picture to make it 'widescreen'. Get the Elite disc for Evil Dead, which is really cheap (around $5-10) off ebay and has most of the features from the book of the dead.

For Evil Dead 2, get the Anchor Bay special edition. Not the one in the tin box.

For Army of Darkness, depending on which cut you prefer. If you like the theatrical cut, get the Anchor Bay one with the documentary. If you like the directors cut (which i prefer) get the Anchor Bay 'bootleg' disc with commentary.

Or, there's a rumor that there's gonna be a 5-disc or 6-disc set coming out soon, with an extra disc full of stuff. you could wait for that.

im not sure exactly what you mean, i know that its OAR was 1.33:1 but i dont think they 'cut' anything to make it widescreen. its matted. unless your one of those people that think they cut the movie to make it widescreen. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I own the Book of the Dead, and I'll tell you, it's worth it. It has 2 new documentaries, and the book of the dead is just cool. If you're a devoted fan of these films, pay the extra 10 bucks and get it.

The Anchor Bay DVD's are by far the best in horror, and they do a great job with the entire Evil Dead series. I also have Evil Dead 2 SE and Director's Cut Bootleg version of Army of Darkness.

Anyway you decide to go, I'm sure you'll be happy.

The movie was actually filmed in 1.33:1, and I've read in numerous places, that they cut a few inches of the each top side to get the picture to fit.

If you check out the scene where Ash is hitting one of the deadites with the poker, you can see that, on the 'widescreen' version, you can't see most of the poker, but on the Elite disc, everything is clear.

Either way, it doesn't really matter, its just a movie. i dont even like evil dead 1 that much, i only bought it to complete the set.

yeah, i think youre right because i think matting does cut off some of the picture, usually to remove boom mics and stuff that shouldnt be seen. which isnt the case for evil deads 1.33 ratio.

Don't worry, I'm in Korea and you're in Florida. Besides, the book doesn't work. I'm going to have to track down the other two copies and examine them.

You are accurate that they have cropped the top and bottom of the film actually shot to make this wide screen. Many video and previous DVD versions have been presented in the full screen as shot. I am very pleased with my Book of the Dead wide screen version though and think of it as the proper version. Sam Raimi helped/guided Anchor Bay with this release and he wanted it in wide screen. He knows that he shot in 1:33 but that was only because of cost. He always intended it to be wide screen and theatrical release was in wide screen. Yes you may be missing some cropped footage from what you are used to seeing but if it as intended by the director then it is good enough for me.

Knowing this I would recommend either getting the Anchor Bay special edition, or get the Book of the Dead and the Elite version. The Book of the Dead will maintain a collectible value and you can use the Elite edition for everyday viewing.
