Great. It's a really deep character study that repeatedly covers the usual Scorsese themes: guilt, pain, etc. Not to mention the beautiful camerawork, stupendous acting, and great use of music. It's one of those films people say you must see eventually if you want to be a serious film buff.
Unfortunately, there are a fair amount of Schmoes who don't like it, many say it's because the main character is "so unlikeable." You can judge for yourself if you see it. But I do highly recommend it.

Yeah, Joe Pesci has a sizeable part. He's outstanding in it.

This film is very good, with its strength on its performances, of course we get Joe Pesci doing his usual crazy mother fucker, badass wholl do anything for his boss type of character we got in Casino and good fellas.
Martin Scorcese likes to make movies about people who were once great and then go down into obscurity of failure, casino did this and so did goodfellas. Raging Bull is no exeption, the rapid decline of the main character in Ragin Bull becomes very evident towards the ending of the film.
Rent this and Taxi Driver for a double dose of the best of Scorcese/Deniro!

Its ok, but I'm not sure why its considered one of the greats. Great acting in it, but the story is fairly boring and I couldn't really see much "point" to it all. And yes deNiro plays a very unlikeable main character that you really dont give a shit about.

RAGING BULL
Starring: Robert De Niro (Jake La Motta), Joe Pesci (Joey La Motta), Cathy Moriarty (Vickie La Motta), Nicholas Colasanto (Tommy Como), Frank Vincent (Salvy Batts)
I agree with everything that's been said here so far. The film is a powerful piece of work, and a strong, deep character study. It's Scorsese's "Citizen Kane", you might say, as it also deals with one man's rise and fall, through triumphs and hardships, and how at the end, the way he behaves and treats others ultimately destroys him, resulting it his ultimate decline. It's a wonderful movie, Jake La Motta is unlikeable, but he's also one of the most complex, multi-layered characters in history and not just your typical movie asshole. He does a lot of damage (to himself and others around him) that would make him seem potentially unlikeable, but the more you understand him, the more you comprehend his actions and why he does them. It's not just La Motta himself, it's also the world he's living in, the circumstances he's under, and his inability to reach out to others that causes him to become more and more of a jerk until it is eventually too late. De Niro's fierce, raw and realistic performance is one of the greatest performances ever in cinematic history, and he really brings a sympathetic edge to La Motta and makes you pity the animal (in the jail cell scene especially, when he's pounding the walls in rage, as well as his "I'm not an animal" breakdown), even at times that make you want to just punch him out for all the horrible things he says and do. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty also lend fantastic support as La Motta's brother and second wife, but it's really De Niro's show all the way, as well as Scorsese's masterful direction (the fact that it is shot in black & white also fits the mood and tone of the film perfectly). One of the best films of the 80's, and of all time in general.
"I remember those cheers, they still ring in my ears and for years they remain in my thoughts. 'Cause one night I took off my robe and, what'd I do?, I forgot to wear shorts. I recall every fall, every hook, every jab, the worst way a guy can get rid of his flab. As you know my life was a jab. Though I'd rather hear you cheer when I delve into Shakespeare "A horse, a horse. My kingdom for a horse" I haven't had a winner in six months. And though I'm no Olivier, if he fought Sugar Ray he would say it the thing ain't the ring, it's the play. So give me a stage, where this Bull here could rage. And though I could fight I'd much rather recite: That's Entertainment."

One of my favortie movies of all-time. I don't know if I'm just a little off, but I actually disagree with the common statement that Jake La Motta is an unlikeable character. Well, at least I half-agree and half-disagree. Throughout much of the film, you're just saying to yourself "What a complete asshole," but then there's some parts where you feel sorry for him, and you can understand his reasoning, even if you don't agree with it. I don't think he's just a stereotypical tough-guy asshole...he's much more complex than that.

It's a really good movie, and is the 3rd best Scorsese movie I've seen (Goodfellas and Casino are better in my opinion)

The short verdict: it's a great movie, but not an enjoyable one to watch.
