In my mass media class, we had to pick a topic. I chose, as you may have guessed by now, movies that have had an impact on culture.

First, let me state that I may change it to films that had impact on films...but I will probably do 'Life Imitating Art' (in a good way).

I don't mean Citizen Kane and how it was one of the most influential films of all-time in the movie industry (mainly).

Here is what I mean:

Rebel Without A Cause - influenced rebellion
James Dean - pratically defined "cool" for a generation of teens.

I am going to show clips of these films, btw.

Gentleman's Agreement - delt with anti-semitism
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - focuses on the anti-establishment and what is done to them
To Kill a Mockingbird - delt with racist issues and the fact that all men are created equal

Blaxploitation films have had a lot of influence. I think rappers have either sampled sound bytes or been influenced by them in some way. Other rappers seem to be influenced by samurai/ninja films and even horror movies.

I think the younger generation are influenced by a lot of movies. The whole slang/txt msg way of speaking was arguably started by films such as Clueless, and reinforced by such gems as LEgally Blonde.

I think "cool" films affect us the most. Some will be swayed by violent films like Fight Club or The Matrix, some by the more darker side of violence such as Goodfellas or Pulp Ficton (I don't mean in the copycat killing way, but just in how we perceive ourselves and talk etc.).

And if you want a jackass example, when I was about 10yrs-old I saw California Man and talked like Pauly Shore for a few days, sounding like an epileptic horse when I thought it was "cool".

PULP FICTION was definately the most influential movie of the 90's. It spawned so very many imitators and like minded films it has become an important part of our cultural film-fabric.

The best one I can think of is Jaws and how much it made people scared of the water and sharks.

Reservoir Dogs created a lot of movie geeks when word of mouth spread upon it, and Clerks took it even further.

Jaws also profoundly changed the way film industry works, before it, most films were content with a little business, now content and story are irrelevant, all films have to gross 300 million (look what they released last summer) any story that can't be easily marketed, or reduced to a poster has no chance of being made.

But I digress. A movie that had an impact on culture? SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER

Psycho made numerous people (including Janet Leigh) never take another shower, due to the vulnerability

...and a key reason we have 'blockbusters' today.

For the youth culture with out a doubt.

Brando in "The Wild One" . Predates Dean. Although I personaly think Dean made a bigger impression because of his off screen behaviour and the fact that all his movies were about rebellion and individualism.

"Easy Rider". A terrible movie but imporant.

What The Wild One was in the 50ies (1953) Easy Rider was in the 70ies. (1969)

I also think that the teenpix of the 80ies moulded a generation.(John Hughes)

Just check out the boards everyone recalls the lines of those movies and everyone grew up with them. The first time pictures were made en masse specifically for the teen audience.

Well, actually, Jaws also had a lot to do with that. Star Wars just pushed it that extra step.

STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, BACK TO THE FUTURE, JAMES BOND, Disney classic animated flicks (stopping just before POCAHONTAS), and the Looney Tunes. That's my background right there.
