Disposable DVDs To Debut Today

Beginning today (Tuesday), Walt Disney Co.'s Buena Vista Home Entertainment will begin a four-city test of "self-destructing" DVDs that will be sold in convenience stores, drug stores, gas stations, toy stores and other outlets. After the DVDs are removed from their packaging, they become unreadable by DVD players after 48 hours. Although the DVDs, manufactured by Flexplay, are intended to be offered as an alternative to rentals (consumers don't have to return them), Disney's suggested asking price of $6.99 is considerably higher than the average rental charge. Test markets include Austin, TX; Peoria/Bloomington, IL; Charleston, SC; and Kansas City, MO.

Are the movies on the DVDs the same quality as a regular DVD? I doubt it... if they're only asking 6.99. Although they'll have to come way down in price before they really tap into the rental market. Seems like a silly idea to me.

I can just imagine it now for all of you Blockbuster employees. A customer will rent a movie, then 2 days later, complain how it won't play anymore, and demand a refund. You say it's meant to do that, they get angry, speak to your manager, and get the shit end of the stick

Sounds like a stupid idea to me.

Wow, I knew Michael Eisner was a money grubbing bastard who preys upon unsuspecting parents with cartoons, but this is ridiculous! Who in their right mind would buy something like this? It's a waste of money and plastic as far as I'm concerned. It's nothing more than a money-making scam that will disappear once the jig is up.

IMO, this will only fuel the fires for video piracy.

Buy a disc, rip it before it's bad & burn it.

Although people are already doing that with rentals.

Very stupid idea. The world already has enviromental problems and it doesn't have to get worse. I hope these DVDs get pulled off soon.

It won't last. And it shouldn't. What the hell kind of idea is this anyway? And how many of these disposable DVDs would they need to make? It's 1 per person who rents it, as opposed to video stores, where it's one (or more if it's a new release) for every person who wants to rent it. And are people really that lazy that they can't return a movie to the video store? Even if they are, there's always Netflix. I see no need for these disposable DVDs. Dumb idea.

Hmmm. I don't see how this will work. Won't it just encourage pirating? It would mean pirates only have 48 hours to copy the disk. This will also add to the more waste we have. There will be millions of usless disks in just a week. This is just another money making ploy by the money grabbing Disney. It won't last.

would someone like to tell me what in the hell that would accomplish?

Stupid idea hopefully it will fade away before it even spreads nation or even worldwide. The only good thing I can see from this is no more scratched to hell DVDs from Blockbastards. Disney needs to just have Pixar release more kick ass computer animated movies. :)

My city just happens to be one of the 4 test markets but I have yet to run across these discs. Personally I think it is one of the dumbest things that could exist. There are so many Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos around my home that it isn't a big deal for me to return a movie. Why the hell would I want to pay nearly twice as much as a normal rental just to have the convenience of not having to return it??? It makes no sense at all. I doubt this "great" invention will last. Very stupid idea!

Is there a link or can someone post an image on what this stupid thing looks like? From the various arrays of articles I read on google sez, it's gonna fail no doubt and to my understanding the disc is Red? And once you break open the item, there is a 48 hr time frame and when it turns black, the disc is unreadable. So, if for some reason an emergency happens or you are being forced away from the TV whatever you paid has gone down the toilet.

There really isn't anything else to add that hasn't already been said.

What a patheticly stupid move, I hope this dies out and fades away and no-one will remember a damn red disc again.

What's the deal with self-destruct?

So let me get this straight. Disney's going to charge more money than a rental, for a DVD that lasts for about 1/3 the amount of time you get to keep a rental...WHAT?!

*Besides, I rent my movies from the library, so I don't pay for shit...:D

I just don't like the concept of how much waste will come as a result of this idea. More trash is always a bad idea in my mind.

I agree this is a bad ideal, But maybe this is for the family that is traveling. Alot of cars have dvd in them, and if your 200 miles from home you cant stop and rent something to shut the kids up in the back of the van. But still BAD ideal.

thats a good reason, i never thought of that. I don't think its a big enough group of people to get the spark of this idea into a money making fire.

Hope it goes out soon.

The only people that are going to buy them are people with DVD burners, but rentals are still cheaper.

This is just a bad idea, because there are some DVD's out there that cost just as much as those disposable discs... Check the 5.88 bin at walmart, you're bound to find something you like. I would rather just pay for the whole disc or rent it, this is just a plain ol' bad idea.

Yea, I read the whole thing in the newspaper and thought it was stupid. And that's even before I found out it's friggin 6.99!! Of course, rationally no one in their right mind would want to spend twice as much as the rental price for a DVD that you throw in the trash ... also:

- Blockbuster has a "rent it, like it, buy it for $10" deal going on right now for people who would like to keep the DVDs they rent,
- If it self-destructs by reacting with air, how the hell can a company guarantee a 48-hour window? And how to compensate for rooms with less/more condensation or different temperature?
- Pay-per-view eliminates renting period.
- Environmentalists will have a cow.

But even with all those rational thoughts, usually when a media company "tests" an idea on the market, they are working on trying to mandate the idea ... meaning one day all the rental stores may become "disposable DVD stores" or something like that. Kinda like when Universal Studios started the Macrovision encoding. Scary thoughts ... hope it isn't a reality.

$6.99 that's bullshit. Your better off renting it and then getting off your fat lazy ass to return it to the rental outlet. Or better yet you could just buy the disk for a few bucks more. A smell a ripoff.

I really wish they wouldn't waste their time developing crap like this. I was just in my local grocery store last night and they had a huge display full of these stupid movies. $6.99! Nobody cares about this stupid idea. Then I have to sit through the damn commercials every ten minutes advertising these things. Take them off the market! It's a dumb idea!!! I wish they wouldn't have picked my city as one of the test markets but I guess they did it b/c they think all the students at UT (hook 'em Horns) are too lazy to return movies!

Well Vince is just one particular library that just suck rocks on selections? Where I'm at certain library locations has the pretty good to damn awesome selections for DVD. Also, I can reserve titles via their on line websites for no more than .75 per title which is the going rate here, in another county its reserves are free at the moment.
