I was wondering if anyone knows of any films that were made that contain alot of propoganda. I like watching some foreign films that contain obvious propoganda just to learn about the way some filmmakers used film to get their messages across.

Triumph of the Will was the first to come to mind when I read the topic. A Nazi propoganda film from the 30's, I believe (possibly from the 20's).

It's been a while since I've seen it, but it would be well worth the trouble to see it. It opens in the sky, white fluffy clouds, then a tiny plane slowly descends from the heavens and lands, then out steps Herr Hitler. Subtle.
Amazing camera techiques that are still in voque.
Dated? Catch some Calvin Klein Obession ads, you could swear they've ripped off a lot of imagery directly from the film.
According to Oliver Stone HBO have got letters from the US State department telling them not to broadcast Comandante, Stone's film about Fidel Castro, which HBO paid for. The film does kinda show castro in a positive light, but that positive light is largely based just on things castro says about himself and about cuba- and let's face it who believes him? Anyway it's an interesting film worth seeing if you ever get the chance, and I guess it does fit into this "Foreign Propoganda Films?" topic. The state department certainly seems to think so.

Hitlerjunge Quex: Ein Film vom Opfergeist der deutschen Jugend
I'ts a movie I saw on TV here in holland one time.
Eventhough it can be seen as a drama/educational movie( which is almost impossible as we all know what happened after the 1930's)it's a classic example of the german propaganda that was unleashed on the german population in the years before the war started.
I't also gives you a good example of what the "normal" life was like in pre-war germany.
Not as good as "triumph des willens"by the late leni riefenstahl( would like to see a movie being made from her life's story) but it's still a good propaganda-movie

I'd just like to point out that the man who made many of those Nazi propaganda films Leni Reifenstahl died this week. More details here...http://www.joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62013

Just a quick note, Reifenstahl was a woman and to say I haven't seen Triumph of the Will but I have always wanted to.

The best are Yo Soy Cuba and Triumph Des Willens. And of course the masterpiece Battleship Potemkin, in fact most great Russian flicks from 20-45 were heavily propogandic and nature and are definetly worth checking out, particularly Eisenstein's stuff.

Quentin, I was just about to mention Alexander Nevsky, by Eisenstein. It is blatant propaganda, but that just makes it more fascinating, right? Besides it's a well made movie that is still entertaining today. Interesting stuff.

I find it disturbing that the government was asking a private pay station not to air a documentary just because it failed to show a person in a negative light.

Speaking of Triumph, I watched the making of Starship Troopers the other day and they talked a lot about the early propoganda films being of influence. When I first saw ST I figured it was just flashy action but never knew the story behind the book.

The book is totally different, and is superior in most ways. Great book, you should read it some time. I think it's ideals for a militaristic society could possibly work, but there would be a huge possibility of corruption.

Is Triumph actually propaganda? I've heard it was just a documentary, but it comes off as propaganda as that's how it is.

I thought about it after watching the film and might give it a read. Visuals work better on me in terms of propaganda.
