What's your favorite Johnny Cash song?
Mine's Tennessee Stud.

I am not real familiar with much of Cash's work.
However, Tennessee Stud and The Ring of Fire are both great tunes.
Ring of Fire holds a special place in my heart for being a favorite sing-along for the drunks at the bar in my old college hangout.
They would sing it a few times every night. Good memories (I think).

Folsom Prison Blues without a doubt. One of the greatest songs of all time.
I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die
That line is one of the greatest lines in any song ever IMO.

I'm partial to his renditions of Tom Wait's Down there by the train and Kristoferson's Sunday morning coming down. Both just came out stunnig when he got his mittens on them

Hard to pick just one...
probably Daddy Sang Bass, the song seems to have a little more meaning since his passing, espceially the passage about joining them in the sky....
I also have a soft spot for Ring Of Fire and Cry, Cry, Cry

Hard to choose. Very hard. Folsom Prison Blues is amazing. More recently I was pretty much stunned by The Man Comes Around. Of his cover versions I love both Hurt and his brilliant version of Nick Cave's The Mercy Seat. There's a lot I haven't heard though. Other than his American albums of the last decade and the Folmson/San Quentin albums plus a double CD best of collection I haven't heard much. I feel that I should do some research and dip into his past masterpieces. He did an album of songs about the plight of the Native American's and how they had been fucked over consistently. I'd like to hear that. Hmmm.

It's called "Why Me, Lord".
Why me, Lord what have I ever done
To deserve even one of the pleasures I've known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth loving you for the kindness you've shown
Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it
So help me Jesus, I know what I am
But now that I know that I've needed you
So help me Jesus my soul's in your hands
Try me Lord if you think there's a way
I can try to repay all I've taken from you
Maybe Lord I can show someone else
What I've been through myself
On my way back to you
Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it
So help me Jesus, I know what I am
But now that I know that I've needed you
So help me Jesus my soul's in your hands
Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it
So help me Jesus, I know what I am
But now that I know that I've needed you
So help me Jesus my soul's in your hands
Jesus my soul's in your hands

Not that it's his best song, but I'm extrememly partial to 'A Boy Named Sue'.....NO ONE could do this song but him!
I also love his cover of 'Thirteen' by Glen Danzig and of course 'Ring of Fire'....but it's really hard to narrow it down.

Kris Kristofferson wrote it. Johnny was covering it.
Kris never gets credit for his own songs because he's a brilliant writer but he can't sing for shit.
But GAWD he's got a sexy voice.

I may like his cover of Hurt better than the original.
But of his own work I have to say it's a toss up between A Boy Named Sue and Ring of Fire. I'm still a bit of a newbie to his work though. I was converted by a firend not too long ago. I need to spend some more time with it.

I've been listening to a lot of Johnny Cash since his passing and have just discovered his cover of Springsteen's "Highway Patrolman". It's a wonderful rendition. Just beautiful. It's less sparse than Springsteen's original but no less touching and sad for all that. Cash's baritone vocal lends the song an extra level of gravitas. It's one of the few covers i've heard that is the equal of the original. Brilliant.
