View Full Version : Disappointing Movies That You Expected To Be Good

Once in a while, there comes a movie that did not meet your high expectations, and therefore was a disappointment. For me, one of these kinds of films was Undercover Brother. I was encouraged by the mainly positive reviews that it got, plus I thought it did look funny, but when I saw it, I didn't like it. The humor got old very quickly, and some of the jokes just weren't funny at all. A big disappointment which got a 5/10 from me.

That could be eternal:

Rushmore
All Cameron Crowe
Most Kubrick
The Night of the Hunter
Donnie Darko (at first view, not at 2nd)
Far From Heaven

etc, etc

Coppola's 1992 remake of DRACULA. Stood in line in the freezing cold for over an hour, bribed the ticket girl 20 bucks for tickets from the next feature (as the one we were attending was sold out), then regretted every minute of it! Should've seen A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT instead.

Cabin Fever!! I heard all this good shit about it so I forked over my hard-earned $5.25 just to be bored for an hour and a half.
Also, I was really disappointed when I went to go see Spider-Man simply because I waited a good 4 weeks after it had opened to go see it. By that time, I heard a shit load of good reviews and I had noticed that it opened with an incredibly large number so I figured it would kick major ass. But it didn't. Now, don't get me wrong, I do think it's a good movie, but after hearing so much crap about it before I actually saw it, I was expecting the best goddamn movie in the world, which it isn't.

The amount of disappointments could fill a book. Examples:

The Matrix Reloaded
Daredevil
Episode 1: Phantom Menace
Episode 2: Attack of the Clones
The Rules of Attraction
Taxi Driver
The Italian Job
Tomb Raider 2

And that's just from the last couple years

What didn't you like about it? I love this film.

A few examples that immediately come to mind:

Rosemary's Baby -- A classic? Hardly. Though well-crafted, with solid performances, it's overlong and ponderous. The ending is pretty interesting, but by then I was just tired of the movie anyways. I think another filmed version of the novel is in order.

The Hours -- Good cast, but the story's pretty thin. Also a somewhat pretentious film overall.

The English Patient -- Technically superior, extremely well crafted historical film with fine performances. Yet, it tries too hard to be artsy for its own sake, leaving me cold and aloof. I may re-evaluate the film if I watch it again.

A Man Apart - looked like a good role for Vin Diesel but the movie is terribly boring

Head of State - Sometimes funny, sometimes awful. Chris Rock should stay away from directing because he's not good at it. The movie is terribly uneven.

Guilty by Assocciation - despite not knowing anything about this straight to video flick, I still expected it too be good because Morgan Freeman was in it and he's never been in a bad movie. Until now. AWFUL movie! And he only has a cameo in it.

The Truth About Charlie - looked great, but is one of the worst movies of all time

American Psycho
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Lara Croft Tomb Raider (the first one, I liked the second one)
Undercover Brother (not funny)
The Transporter (cool first half terrible second half)
The Sweetest Thing (I love and adore Cameron Diaz but this movie takes potentially funny jokes and drags it out so long it's not funny anymore)
Rollerball (it looked like a cool movie but it's very mediocre)
Queen of the Damned (see Rollerball)
Scooby Doo (starts off very funny and clever but what a lame ending)
Breakfast of Champions (great cast, AWFUL movie, damn near unwatchable)
Friday (saw this movie to see what the fuss is about and I still don't know what the fuss is about. I did not laugh once)

Dreamcatcher - I enjoyed it and I had a goofy good time with this comedy/action/horror/mind-fuck, but from the trailers I expected a "good" movie, as in had a great screenplay, great direction, etc.

Loads of gooey fun, though :p

i second that. I didn't hate Dreamcatcher, but the trailer made the movie look phenominal, rather then just really fun.

FINDING NEMO. Good, nice, funny picture, but it wasn't the greatest family movie in years as most critics called it. Solid picture, but not one of the year's best. I even had more fun at FREDDY VS. JASON.

Movies with heaps of praise that I didn't like much

Vertigo - Not Hitchcock's best, not even close
The Exorcist
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Gladiator
American Beauty

& ofcourse movies that I thought could be decent, but that I downright loathe,

Natural Born Killers
The Boondock Saints
Stars War Episode I
Despardo
&
Scarface (overall it was overly long, boring, predictable, w/ a extremely unlikable main character in my opinon - it's only saving grace were 2 good scenes - the hotel set-up and the end)

The Time Machine (2002) couldn't get anywhere near my lofty expectations.

Vanilla Sky, it was good but I thought it would be much better. Same goes for The Exorcist.

Spiderman

I was so not impressed. I like DareDevil better. At least I got to see Jennifer Garner. What a hottie.

I was expecting Open Range to be a good movie. Not to be as horrible as it was. I also have to say the same for the Hulk this year. I love Ang Lee, but some of the things he did in the movie just bugged me.

Without a doubt it has to be The Matrix: Reloaded, what a dull, chatty, and all around disappointing sequel!

Finding Nemo is this year's Shrek. Good animated movie, but not nearly as good as alot of the critics say it is. A * * * * movie it's not.

Jeepers Creepers 2:
It was a disappointed for me although I enjoyed the movie it just didn't seem like it was anything better than the original. It wasn't scary and tense like the first one was it was just really about action and snacking on those teens.
It definitly wasn't this years greatest horror movie to date as many critics have said but it was a good movie. Just expected a little more I guess.

Ali. Came to appreciate many parts of it after repeat viewing, but the story needed more focus. Better than most stuff out there, though.

All the prequels.
