View Full Version : Sub-forum for dvd trades/sales?

JoBlo

Question: Do you think it's a good idea to open a SUB-FORUM in the DVD DISCUSSION forum in which schmoes can trade/sell dvds amongst themselves?

If you AREN'T GOING to be participating in any such forum...please vote NO.

We ask this because we don't want to open a whole new forum if only 3 people are going to use it. A SELLING/TRADING thread about this (http://www.joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=40443) already exists, so we can always just leave the matter in there.

I think this would be a good idea, not only would you be able to sell your dvds to other big movie fans, but more people would come to to site to check it out, and maybe get into joblo. Also, if u pick up a movie that you didn't like, u can trade it with someone who has a movie that you do like. What is one man's trash is another's treasure. Lastly, it would be a lot more organized than just having one big thread, so your posts wouldn't get lost in an endless thread of millions of posts.

As Dennis Miller says----
But thats just my opinion, i could be wrong.

I also think this is a good idea & has worked on the horror section, I think it would be great to have one for horror movie trading & then one for just the normal movie trading(I hope that made sense)

I've actually gone for a no on this particular issue. for one its going to be a logistical nightmare with a vast and multi-national site like this. how do you police it, to make sure no one is welshing on their deals? more the point, it will just become a place where people try and offload the junk that Auntie Ethel got them for Christmas...basically the whole forum would be clogged with copes of Batman and Robin...;)

Ah, as with all the popular trade forums, we would probably have a sticky Trusted Trader List. Then tally a the Trusted points after each week and put a nmber next to the name.

I say yes because in the Horror Trade section you can only sale/trade horror titles and alot of us have other types of movies we would like to get rid of so I think a general movie trading section would be great but only if the Horror one remaines. If the horror one is dropped then I would be a bit ticked.

Well, the Horror forum has one, why not the rest of the board?

I don't think that this is necessary. As Arrow and JoBlo have said in the past, we could get these mainstream movies from any Walmart, Blockbuster, Target, or Walgreens. Horror films, on the other hand (such as Argento's films), can be very hard to find.

Furthermore, I think that this is a bad idea because this is completely unregulated. I had an incident in the Horror Buy/Sell/Trade where I did not get paid for selling a poster. (I will not provide specifics because the details are insignificant). I sent that poster along with a few other free goodies and the schmoe claimed that he did not receive the poster that he wanted. For this reason, I did not receive compensation and there is literally nothing that could be done about it now. (I am not crying about the $6 I lost. I have lost more running the dryer on "permanent press". I illustrate my example to talk about the principle of the situation).

For mainstream goodies, Ebay and Half.com are much superior MODERATED alternatives for this type of thing. I have done over 50 transactions over there (as a giver and as a receiver) and have not had many problems.

Another problem that this site could potentially face is the possibility that imported or illegally copied DVDs may surface on this website. This may give the website some unnecessary legal implications (look at the KazAa lawsuits for instance). Although lawsuits may sound like a logical stretch, the prospect of any sort of legal friction is not too enticing.

Because there are better, already existing alternatives (where you can get quality stuff for damn cheap), because this is unmoderated (by unmoderated, I mean that there is no "feedback" system on deals), and because of the possible legal problems, I see no reason that this "subforum" should exist.

My two cents.

I think it's a good idea. I'm not sure if I would use it to be honest, but it would be there for me to use if I wanted.

But obviously people should use extreme caution.

Alot of people are showing concern but if you look at DVDtalk's Exchange forum, they get about 50-100 posts a day in there and people are constantly trading. However, the incidents are minimal because of the Trusted Trade list.

Can you explain this list? I am not quite sure about the concept.

It sounds like a lot of upkeep. You have to remember that for every forum that we open, there has to be a moderator that volunteers to assume the duties that are required for that forum.

If you are talking about having a moderator track down the good and bad transactions, then it sounds like a headache. That moderator would be responsible for sorting through the threads of the subforum, they would have to continually edit that list of "trusted" users, and they would have to sort through all the feedback. This includes the inevitable complaints. I suppose its feasible, but this sounds like quite a burden. There is a reason that Ebay and Half.com use automated feedback systems.

At the DVDtalk forum, I cant tell you how many people are on the Trusted Trade list, I think maybe 1000+ and there is 1 moderator. The way it works is everytime someone has a good transaction, they reply to the Trusted Trader thread with the personas name and user name and say either +1 or -1. After a week, the mod goes through the list, with sometimes 150 replies and simply tallies the users up and posts +1 or +6 next to the names on the large list. He then deletes the post and makes a new one, with 0 zero replies so people can once again leave feedback and the main Trusled list, which is the first post of the thread is updated. Now to make this easy, anyone with over +10 is simply put up under the GOLD TRADER list. Once you are on this list you no longer get feedback.

I have to tell you that there are almost no problems at all on that forum. Simply if you have more feedback, you have the option to send second. Of course its common to think that problems will come up, but they almost never do. But it does happen. Trader beware.

There are some really crazy people out there that just trade, and they trade like theres no tomorrow. People at DVDtalk trade 300+ DVDs at a time. Alot of people only visit the Horror Boards to trade. I bet this would attract tons of trader people that would then expand into using the other forums. This is also a good thing to promote the site and forum. Also just as a side note, not saying anything, but I would not mind moderating the forum at all. I figure we wouldnt get 50 trades a week until 5-6 months after so the upkeep on the trusted list shouldnt be bad at all.

Also, here is a link to the crazy DVDtalk exchange forum: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=6

I was just reading the website the Delfonics was referring to. Here is a problem that the administrator had with this program. Since MANY of our members are from out of this country (including moderators such as JoBlo, Arrow, Nate6, James Logan, IndianaSev, and BadCoverVersion), the problem cited below would be inevitable if we implement a human monitored feedback system.

I am not aware of the upkeep of the trade forum in the Horror section, but I just thought that the point below was a point worth noting:

Warning - Trade Across Country Lines at Your Own Risk!!
It's unfortunate, but over 1/2 of our bad trades involve people trying to send goods across country borders (most notably between US and Canada). Most of these trades are impossible to track, and with the heightened security measures in place after Sept 11 2001, serious delays in packages can and DO occur.

As a result of the sheer number of Bad US/Canada trades we've decided that we are no longer going to get involved in ANY WAY with trades across country borders. It's a tough decision, but ones which comes out of a number of extremely explosive bad trade situations.

So if you choose to trade outside of the U.S, YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK and with the full understanding that the BULK of the bad trades occur in this space and we will NOT get involved if the trade goes bad. (your only recourse on DVD Talk for a bad trade across country lines is to simply add a negative feedback rating to the Good Trader List), other than that you're on your own.

I'm not happy that we've had to put this new policy in place, I value and respect the Members who visit our site from outside of the US and want to make sure that it's clear that the new policy is not a reflection on how I feel about people in other countries, but more a reflection of the reality of sending packages in and out of the United States since 9-11.

Yes, I have made 20+ trades to canada and all have went off without a single problem. The thing is, even with that warning there on DVDtalk, and with 1000's of DVDs being traded literally every week over there, the problems arent many Ive been told by the mod. Not to mention that this forum would probably never have 1/4 the people as over there making it a tad easier Id say. The horror boards, which ive traded on like 30 times since joining Joblo have been great. Arrow does a good job but hes busy. Hes not keeping that forum under 24/7 watch... well maybe he is but you rarely see him need to step him. Its pretty much a peer-to-peer forum where people deal with each other.

I would definitely use this. While it may be true that ebay and half.com are better sites, the disadvantage for me is that I want to trade, but they require credit cards, and can only sell on those sites. I don't have a credit card, nor would usually sell, so I'm at a disadvantage. And we all have stuff to get rid of, so a horror section shouldn't be the only buy/sell forum

I'm voting no. I don't think a whole forum would get enough traffic to justify itself, if the first thread starts getting a shade long then make a second. I DO think a trusted trader thread would be a good companion to the trade thread though.

I have bought and traded a few on this group at DVD talk, yes honesty is the only policy tolerated at DVD talk DVD Exchange forum. I believe it's the best way. BTW if you do start a trading forum count me in I have 2400+ DVDR1, 2, and 4 and I can put up about 300 to trade at any given time, nothing like being retired and nothing else to do.:)
