View Full Version : Scariest Songs
I'm trying to make the creepiest cd possible for a friend of mine, and I could use all the help I can get. I'm looking for the spookiest, scariest songs out there. What I'm not looking for: funny Halloween-themed songs or death metal. I want songs that are atmospheric, and will keep my friend up at night. Demonic sound effects and ghostly laughter are a plus.
An example of something already on the cd: Nick Cave
Thanks guys!

Oh, and Scott Walker's 'Tilt' still scares the Jebus out of me.

Y'know...i've never heard Tilt. I was kinda put off by the reviews that declared it willfully difficult to the point of being totally impenetrable and almost unlistenable. You've mentioned it a couple of times in various threads. Is it worth my precious time (cash)?

You know, Garbages self titled CD has a kind of spooky vibe to it. At least, Ive always thought so.

I'd say it's a must for the true fan...but "impenetrable" is probably the best way to describe it.
It's more a journey into the 'avant garde' as opposed to an actual album...very operatic in parts, loose in structure...but that's not to say the instrumentals aren't anything less than perfect.
I personally like it...Farmer In The City and Tilt are both pleasant tracks, and the rest is quite unlike anything I've ever heard before...but yeah, it's some strange brew...and certain tunes are scarier than Pip Schofield's glinty new barnet.

I still get a major chill down my spine when listening to Slayer's "Dead Skin Mask"
"dance with the dead in my dreams/listen to their hallowed screams"

Try Christian Death's Window Pain off the Sex And Drugs And Jesus Christ album. Also check out Current 93's St. Peter's Keys All Bloody off the Dogs Blood Rising Album. Two really creepy songs, both with great sound effects.

My friend said that Pink Floyd's "Is There Anybody Out There?" was really scary to him when he was stoned one night with all of the lights out. But I dunno if your friend would find it scary.

I'm a big fan of Scott Walkers Tilt. Sure it's not for everyone and it can be a bit creepy but it also is quite majestic as well.
The black dog runs at night of the Twin peaks movie soundtrack scares the socks off of me.
Pretty much most of th Black Rider album by Tom Waits gives me a wee bit of the ol nightmares as well.

Turn off the lights and listen to Revolution 9 on The Beatles White Album. I did once and, um, tired and emotional, had to turn the bastard off. George Martin - he's scarier than DEATH, you know.

The Cure's Lullaby has always been scary for me, maybe due to the video. It's one of my childhood's nightmares: the singer eaten by the spider, and later became some sort of mutation... *shivers*:o

Tricky's "Strugglin'" sends a chill throughout my body. It's more disturbing than scary, but it's really a tough listen. As is his Tattoo which is just a creepy as all hell track.

Black Sabbath's self-titled song must of scared the crap out of everyone when it was first released but it's a bit tame now, but still very good. Also, Radiohead's "Climbing Up The Walls" (that scream near the end is one of the most disturbing things I've ever heard) and the theme tune from "Halloween".

I agree with the "Halloween" theme. Turn off all the lights and just listen to it. Gives me chills just thinking about it.
