To contribute to my likingness for Buffy at the moment I shall make a tournament on the baddies of the show. This will not focus on one episode villains mainly unless thwy were really memorable(The Gentlemen). This will mainly focus on the season's main baddie's or villains who became an integral part to the story(Anyanka). Here is the list so far:
1)Glory
2)Mr. Trick

Clever clever you are knowing that I watched Earshot last night.
I don't think "Anyanka" can be really be counted as a villain- she had what, 1 scary scene before becoming comic relief? I don't even think she was that villainous in the S7 frat boys episode. Ditto Harmony, only more so with her.

Great idea for a tournament. I'll glady participate. I know you said that you mainly just want to include the most important villains, but there are so many great villains who appeared in just one episode, or a small handful of episodes. You just have to include villains like Gachnar, Sweet, and Veruca. Not to mention Faith, who wasn't on your original list. She was most definitely a villain in season 3, regardless of what happened afterwards, and it would be a crime not to include her. So if I were you, I'd round up 32 of the most memorable villains, and make a tournament. Obviously it's up to you, I just thought make a suggestion.

I second Urbanlegend's mention of Adam. He was the coolest villain, in my opinion.

Round 1: Match 1
Glory
Season(s) as villain: Season 5
Episode of Death: The Gift
Mr. Trick
Season(s) as villain: Season 3
Episode of death: Consequences
Glory was good and all but my vote goes to the ultra cool Mr. Trick.
Pumpkinhead

Glory. Quite possibly my favourite Buffy villain ever.
Glory because they did a good job of selling her as a major threat to buffy, and they didn't manage that often with the shows bad guys.
I think the alcohol is starting to effect my memory- could you remind me who Catherine Madison was and what episode she was in please?
urbanlegend23

Glory - strong, fast, funny and an extreme threat. She was played brilliantly by Clare Kramer and was the Big Bad in Buffy's best season.
What more could you want?
My vote is for GLORY!

Don't worry, she appeared in the third episode of the series and was never seen again (well, unless you count Phases), so it's no wonder you don't remember her. She was Amy's mother (and Amy, I guess) in The Witch.
Oh OK, cool, thanks, I haven't watched season 1 in years. Time to get the dvds out again methinks.

Glory wins that match with a 3-1 vote.
Round 1: Match 2
The Master
season(s) as villain: season 1
episode of death: Prophecy Girl
Info: The Master was the big baddie of Season 1 in Buffy. He was risen in Sunnydale and his main objective was to get his strength back(he was held back from going out of where he was). He does get stronger but is killed by Buffy.
Drusilla
season(s) as villain: season 2
episode of death: didn't die on an episode of Buffy(died on Angel)-last appearence was on the episode Crush.
Info: Drusilla is a psychic who was turned into a vampire by Angelus after he made her go crazy. She ended up with Spike and became one of the villains in season two. She left after season two but returned in season 5. She was eventually burned to death by Angel though in his show.
The Master did nothing. Nothing at all. My vote goes to Drusilla.
urbanlegend23
09-20-2003, 05:49 PM
Uh, The Master KILLED Buffy. I think that qualifies as something, even though he is the weakest villain ever to appear on the show.
But my vote is definitely for DRUSILLA. A great, complex and interesting character, and very evil in a gothic, sexy way.

I agree that he didn't do much. But I liked the character a lot, though. I think it was the existential musings and cool appearance :). Something about him just sat well with me.
On the other hand, I didn't like The Master as well as some of the other villains. He was cool enough, but he was pretty much completely overshadowed by The Anointed One.
As for this round...I think I'll for Dru, a truly twisted character.

Easily Drusilla. Such a wonderful character.
I love her line that goes something like this.
"I can see the stars, but I've named them all the same name, and there's terrible confusion."
Oh, and I didn't know that she died! I've only seen a few episodes of Angel, so that's news to me. It actually pisses me off when they do that. I have no problem with Buffy characters crossing over into Angel (although they rely on it too much) but I think that if the character originated in Buffy, they should meet their demise in Buffy, otherwise not at all. Does anyone else feel this way?

This match was a slaughter. Drusilla wins with a 5-0 vote.
Round 1: Match 3
Spike
Season(s) as villain: 2(also had a stint in season 3)
Episode of Death: Chosen(although coming back on Angel next season as a ghost)
Info: Spike was Drusilla's boyfriend and was another baddie from Season 2. He left with Drusilla at the end of season 2 and returned later on in season 3 for one episode. He came back in the fourth season and has been a recurring character from then on becoming a good vampire. In season 6 he had a fling with Buffy for a while until she broke up with him. He loved Buffy and got angry so he left to try and be his old self again. He wasn't very specific on what he wanted and got his soul back instead. It was in the series finale when Spike sacrificed himself to save the world thus bringing the end to him.
Angelus
Season(s) as villain: season 2
Episode of death: Hasn't died.
Info: Angelus is the former version of Angel(basically Angel without a soul). He had a curse on him to make him in sorrow all the time to keep his soul. If he experienced one true moment of happiness he would lose his soul and become Angelus. This happened in season 2 when Buffy and Angel made love. Angelus proceeded to kill Ms. Calendar and other evil things until they found the curse to get his soul back. Willow performed the curse(with the help of others)and got his soul back.
A VERY tough choice here. VERY TOUGH CHOICE. Although since this is a villain tournament Angelus was more evil than Spike so my vote will go to Angelus.
That last round went quick didn't it- I never got a chance to vote (sob!). Ah well at least the right person won- the master was far to camp in places to be a good bad guy
Angelus vs Spike isn't a contest at all. You know spike is great and all but angelus is the fucking man. I give every episode in season 2 from surprise onwards 10/10. I just love it. (well ok maybe go fish wasn't 10/10, but even that wasn't bad.)
Angelus

Definitely Angelus in this round. He is so fucking evil and brilliantly played by David Boreanaz.
Spike wasn't that evil, he has always acted strangely human and works better as a Scoob than a Big Bad.
someguy
09-21-2003, 04:16 PM
Drusilla died. Remember how she was represented by The First?
Dru never died on Angel I don't think. The first could use her because she, as a human, died back in the day. Indeed I don't think shes been in Angel since season 2, and that was before Crush.

Angelus wins that match with a 4-0 vote. ED no that ain't a spoiler really since they said that since Chosen was aired(well during the interviews). BTW I heard a rumour(I say rumour since it might be the wrong actor)that Alyson Hannigan is getting married to Alexis Denisof. If so that's really cool.
Round 1: Match 4
The Gentlemen
Season(s) as villain: season 4
Episode of Death: Hush
Info: The Gentlemen are demons from a fairy tale that come to a town and steal everyone's voices. They then go to people at night and cut their hearts out. They went to Sunnydale to collect hearts but Buffy and Riley got the voices back. Buffy screamed and the Gentlemen's heads exploded from the noise(in the fairy tale the ending was similar to this one).
The Mayor
Season(s) as villain: season 3
Episode of death: Graduation Day Part 2
Info: The Mayor of Sunnydale has been alive for about a hundred or so years and has made Sunnydale a better feeding ground for demons and vampires. In the third season of the show he started to do his "ascension" whch would make him become a creature and destroy the world. He workked with Mr. Trick until he was slayed and worked with Faith from then on. He did get his ascension but Buffy killed him before he made any serious damage(except for what he did in Sunnydale).
The Gentlemen were creepy but The Mayor was so evil yet seemed like one of the nicest people you could meet. I always get so mad at what he does and at times I just want to hang out with him. I vote for The Mayor who is also one of the best Buffy villains on the show IMO.
Pumpkinhead
09-21-2003, 08:54 PM
Damn, I missed a round. Oh well, I would have voted for Angelus anyway.
And yeah, Alyson and Alexis really are getting married.
As for the round at hand, it's a damn tough one, but I'm going to go with The Gentleman because, a) they were, hands down, the creepiest villains on the show and b) it's a testament to their strength as villains that they are so fondly remembered when they only appeared in one episode. I really do love The Mayor, though.

Sadly the Gentlemen win that match with a 4-1 vote.
Round 1: Match 5
Warren
Season(s) as villain: 5 and 6
Episode of death: Villains
Info: Warren is part of the Trio,a gang of three geeky guys who tried to kill Buffy in season 6. He did have a problem in season when he made the April Bot in season 5. Although he was back in season 6 and caused some havoc. After Buffy beat the Trio up and Warren escaped he went after Buffy later on and shot her. He accidentally shot Tara also which angered Willow and brought her evil side out. She eventually captured Warren and tortured him until she eventually skinned him.
The First
Season(s) as villain: 3 and 7
Episode of death: Not dead(you can't kill all evil)
Info: The First is made up of all the evil in the world so to say. It morphs itself into people who have died(Glory,The Mayor,Drusilla(possibly),Adam)and tortures people by playing mind games with them. It made an appearence in season 3 torturing Angel by forming itself into victims of Angelus. Eventually in season 7 it got the upgrade to "big bad" and was the season's main villain(well ONE of). Eventually it got swallowed up with the Hellmouth but it still lives.
My vote will go to The First.
urbanlegend23

Really interesting how The First, instead of being physically threatening, brought out the characters personal demons and used words instead of kickass fighting to do its evil.

Pumpkinhead
09-23-2003, 06:58 PM
I vote for Warren. Don't get me wrong, I love The First, but I want to show my support for who I believe is the shows most underappreciated character.
One of the great things about Buffy are the villains that populate its landscape. And as much as we hate the villains on the show sometimes, you almost admire them at times. They are always impressive in some way. They always have strength, beauty, intelligence, or power. That's what I love about Warren. Unlike the other villains on the show, he wasn't gorgeous, he wasn't intelligent, he wasn't powerful, he wasn't impressive in any way. He was just a regular, despicable slimeball. Every time he did something, you wanted to slap him. No one admired Warren. I think that by playing against our expectations, Warren was an amazing villain because you really, really hated him. I really can't say that about any of the other villains. Glory, well she brain sucked Tara, but she was funny and gorgeous! Drusilla killed Kendra, but she was sexy in that strange sort of way. Spike tried to kill Buffy, but he was cool. He was a badass Billy Idol wannabe (well actually, Billy Idol stole his look, lol) who you could almost root for. Warren was the villain that you really loved to hate.
Warren. For much the same reasons as Pumpkinhead. But you have to ask- ultmately how threatening can a villain who can't touch anything actually be?
Pumpkinhead

Good point. The First was responsible for a good many creepy and memorable scenes, but you never got that sense of, "Wow, they're really screwed over here" because when it all boiled down to it, The First was pretty much powerless. They even had to bring in a flesh-and-blood villain (Caleb) in order to up the stakes.
someguy
09-24-2003, 05:17 PM
The First wins that match with a 3-2 vote.
Round 1: Match 6
Vampire Willow
Season(s) as villain: season 3
Episode of Death: "The Wish" and "Dopplegangland"
Info: Vamp Willow is basically the vampire version of Willow. She was in the episode "The Wish" first as part of the alternate universe Cordelia's wish was in. She was staked at the end of that episode but came into the real world when Anya, after losing her powers, tried a spell with Willow to get her power back an error occured making the vamp Willow get sucked out of that world seconds before she got staked. She started wreaking havoc but was brought back to her world after she got sad from staying in this one. She died moments after returning.
Evil Witch Willow
Season(s) as villain: Season 6
Episode of death: Not dead(you can count "Grave" in a sense but I won't)
Info: The Witch version of Willow started up around seasons 5 and 6. Willow was using too much magic and had to quit. She did to stop her evil self from killing but came back again when Tara was killed by Warren. She got all the power she got and went on a hunt for Warren. She eventually got him and killed him but now she wanted Jonathan and Andrew. Buffy,Anya and Giles stopped her for the time but she eventually overpowered them and took some of Giles' powers. The power from Giles was too much for her and she went to destroy the world. Xander came to stop her and succeeded because Giles' plan was to make her get some powers from him. The "happiness" of the powers gave her some humanity and stopped her.
Tough choice for me. Vamp Willow was so sexy, funny and evil. Witch Willow was not very sexy(veins),not so funny but was really really evil. I'll sit this one out for the time being. Oh yeah one more note I thought about it and I decided that Jonathan and Andrew don't really deserve to be considered "villains" on the show since it was mainly Warren so I replaced Jonathan with Snyder and Andrew with the First Slayer.
urbanlegend23
09-24-2003, 05:59 PM
Hmm...VERY tough decision. I'll have to go with Witch Willow, she was just so entertaining and kicked ass. I still ABSOLUTELY ADORE the Vamp Willow though.

Hey urban you got AOL IM or something at the moment or want to go on the JoBlo chat? Cause I'm "bored now." ;)
Evil Willow.
I love season 6. It is cynical, nihilistic and self involved. And so am I. I read an article Ten ways that Charmed is better than Buffy (http://www.xtreme-gaming.com/theotherside/tenways.html) (yeah I know ha ha ha). But it does have an interesting statement which sums up my feelings towards evil willow- "It’s as if the show is being boiled down until only the Joss Whedon message – “there is no moral structure, there is no help, no one's coming, no one gets it, I have to do it” – is all that remains." I pretty much agree with this but imo it made buffy better not worse.
Happy happy joy joy! :D

09-25-2003, 03:39 PM
I vote for witch Willow too making that a 4-0 win for Witchy Willow(sort of unfair match since no matter what Willow would make it).
Round 1: Match 7
Principal Snyder
Season(s) as villain: seasons 1,2 and 3
Episode of death: Graduation Day part II
Info: Snyder was the new principal of Sunnydale high after Flutie got eaten. He never liked Buffy and the Scoobs, along with everyone else. He was very cruel even expelling Buffy at one time. He went on like this but was soon eaten by the Mayor in the season finale of the third season.
The First Slayer
Season(s) as villain: season 4
Episode of death: Should I say Restless or not since it's already dead but came back through the episode. Plus we don't see it die.
Info: The first Slayer is obviously the first person who became a vampire slayer. It came into play when Buffy and the gang used a spell to make Buffy super strong("uber Buffy")so she could destroy Adam. She did but this offended the First Slayer. The spell made it come after them in their dreams, killing Giles,Willow and Xander but Buffy defeated it making them come back to life.
This one is tough because Snyder was just so mean and evil but the First Slayer did some groovy kills and was the jey part to Restless which is a wonderful Buffy episode. I'll sit this one out for a bit also.
urbanlegend23

I vote for the First Slayer to break the tie and making her/him wins with a 3-2 vote.
Round 1: Match 8
Ethan Rayne
Seasons as Villain: Seasons 2 to 4
Episode of Death: Not dead(or not stated since he might have been killed)
Info: Ethan Rayne is one of Giles' old buddies from college. They don't like each other now but Ethan has caused trouble in Sunnydale. His first time was when he opened a costume shop in Sunnydale for Halloween. He cursed all the costumes so that on Halloween night everyone would become what they were dressedas in their costume. He was beaten up by Giles and left. He came back though when a demon was chasing him along wih Giles and others. Ethan tried to get his "mark" that would tell the demon where he is on Buffy but it didn't work and he left. He came back a third time working with the Mayor to make the band candy which would have all the adults act like kids again so they wouldn't interfere with a ritual. He ran away yet again. His final time was in the fourth season when he went out drinking with Giles. Ethan put something in the drink to make him a demon. Giles was saved but Riley got the Initiative to arrest him and keep him captive.

Sorry for the lack of updates but anyways Caleb wins with a 4-2 vote.
Round 1: Match 9
Darla
Season(s) as villain: Season 1(I heard that she was on season 5 though)
Episode of Death: Angel
Info: Darla is the woman who sired Angel. She went on a path of destruction with him for hundreds of years until he ran away from her when he got his soul back. They met up again in Sunnydale though when he was looking after Buffy. She tried to make Angel look bad by making him look like he tried to kill Joyce but he proved that she could trust him when he staked Darla in the Bronze. She came back on Angel later on.
Faith
Season(s) as villain: Seasons 3 and 4
Episode of death: Not dead
Info: Faith was the replacement slayer for Kendra when she died. She teamed up with Buffy for a bit before joining the Mayor and being his sidekick. She eventually was put into a coma when Buffy almost killed her. She woke up and tried to kill Buffy but their bodies switched for a period of time. She returned in season 7 though and fought off the baddies with Buffy.
Gee tough choice. ;) Faith gets my vote. I predict a slaughter.
Faith by a loooooong way. Darla was pretty much a non entity in buffy but was much better in seasons 2 and 3 of Angel.

Round 1: Match 10
Adam
Season(s) as villain: Season 4
Episode of Death: Primeval
Info(I don't know much at all about Adam but this is the info I got so it will probably be wrong at parts): A former worker for The Initiative who turned into a half man half robot type mutant. He couldn't be stopped by the Initiative and was too strong for Buffy. They did kill him though by using a spell to make an uber-buffy which ripped his heart out.
Veruca
Season(s) as villain: Season 4
Episode of Death: Wild At Heart
Info: Female werewolf who Oz liked(before the evilness)because she was a werewolf also. She tried to kill Willow but Oz stopped her and killed Veruca(remember I don't know much about her too).
I will not vote in this one because I don't really know the villains.

I don't like adam- the problem being that imo he was little more than a weak parody of/ homage to, the Karloff/James Whale Frankenstein.
Pumpkinhead

Neither of them were too impressive, but considering that Adam was the Big Bad he should have been the obvious choice, and since he wasn't, I'm going to pick Veruca.
Sin Eater

Definitely Adam.
I liked Veruca, but Adam was a far better villain.
someguy
10-03-2003, 08:48 PM
I shall break the tie and now vote for Adam cause I saw a couple episodes of him and he seemed cool as a villain. Veruca was annoying and sang like crap(even though it wasn't her real singing voice I believe). So moving on...
Round 1: Match 11
Sweet
Season(s) as villain: Season 6
Episode of Death: Not dead.
Info: Sweet is the demon summoned by Xander that causes people to break into musical numbers. He caused all of Sunnydale to have musical numbers. He was evil though, making people dance so much that they would spontaneiously combust. He thought Dawn summoned him and captured her. He was about to make her his bride and take her with him to the demon world for eternity but when he found out that Xander summoned him he left town(didn't want to be with a guy).
Ted
Season(s) as villain: Season 2
Episode of death: Ted
Info: Ted was a boyfriend of Buffy's mom. He seemed like the perfect man but was always mean to Buffy. She "killed" him but he came back. Turned out he was a robot. Buffy killed him though by bashing him with a frying pan and short circuiting him from the hit.
This is a tough choice. First off I won't give sympathy for Ted because Ritter died since it would be bad to interfere with the voting. Ted was very evil. Someone you would loathe. Sweet was uber-cool and was the cause for OMWF. I'll vote for Sweet just because that super cool part in his song where he snapped his fingers and his suit changed colours. Nice part.

Round 1: Match 12
Der Kindestod
Season(s) as villain: Season 2
Episode of Death: Killed By Death
Info: Der Kindestod is a demon that sucks the life out of sick children by his eyes. Buffy had a flu and was sent to the hospital where she saw Kindestod. She got him and snapped his neck though, killing him.
The Gorch Brothers
Season(s) as villain: Seasons 2 and 3
Episode of Death: One died in Bad Eggs and the other isn't dead.
Info: Lyle and Tector Gorch are cowboy vamps who came to Sunnydale and tried to kill the slayer. At the moment though a monster was brainwashing people. One of the brothers got eaten by the mother of the creature. The other one fled. He came back though with a girlfriend in the episode Homecoming. Cordelia talked him down and he fled again, never to see him again(from what I believe).
I will vote for The Gorch Brothers.

I kinda liked The Gorch Brothers, though they were only used for filler episodes.
Der Kindestod was fantastic looking but didn't have enough screentime. Still, I loved the look and concept of the demon, so Der Kinestod gets my vote.

Der Kindestod, because Killed by Death was the first Buffy episode to seriously frighten me (gimme a break, I was 11). But seriously, he was damn cool and creepy looking, even if he did share more than a passing resemblance with Freddy Krueger.

Round 1: Match 13
The Order of Taraka
Season(s) as villain: Season 2
Episode of Death: What's My Line Parts 1 and 2(I believe)
Info: A group of bounty hunters that are ordered by Spike to go after Buffy to keep her occupied from Spike who was looking for a cure for Drusilla. They are brutal and are undetectable(sometimes). It can be anyone and they will kill anyone in their path in order to get what they need. There were three. A biker type cyclops guy,a salesman who turns into maggots and a police officer. The Cyclops was killed by having his throat slashed by an ice skate. The maggot man was killed by Cordelia and Xander. The police officer was known to have run away(I think she was killed in the church fire though).
Olaf
I have no real info on him. I think he was Anya's older boyfriend guy.
Well I will vote for The Order of Taraka.

I'll end this now since this has dragged on for days. Olaf wins with a 4-1 vote.
Round 1: Match 14
The Judge
Season(s) as villain: Season 2
Episode of Death: Innocence
Info: The Judge is a demon who was chopped into parts which were scattered around the world. Spike and Drusilla raised this demon by getting all the parts. The Judge is a demon who can turn people to dust just by looking at them. He wasn't strong enough when he was resurrected(could only touch)but he got strong enough. That's when Drusilla and Angelus brought him to a mall but Buffy came in time and blew him apart with a bazooka.
Kasistos
Season(s) as Villain: Season 3
Episode of Death: Faith,Hope and Trick
Info: A vampire so old that his hands and feet are cloved(or cloven). He killed Faith's watcher and Faith left a mark in his face(a scar basically). He came to Sunnydale and was going to kill her. Buffy staked him but it wasn't enough so Faith staked him with a roof beam.
My vote definitely goes to The Judge.

Why didn't The Master have cloved hands? He was way older than Kasistos, at least I think he was. Then again, The Master couldn't change out of vamp face, and had a really batlike appearance. Maybe age has different effects on different vamps...

Round 1: Match 15
Rack(I'm not sure on info here so cut me some slack)
Season(s) as villain: Season 6
Episode of Death: Two To Go
Info: No info known.
Catherine Madison
Season(s) as Villain: Season 1
Episode of Death: Not really known(could be Grad Day part 2 cause she must have been still alive as it was proven in Phases)
Info: Mother of Amy Madison she is a very good witch who switched bodies with Amy so she could make her daughter become cheerleader(Cathy used to be the top cheerleader at Sunnydale High). She tried to kill Buffy by performing a spell but Buffy deflected it with a mirror making Cathy to get the spell on herself. Cathy was stuck inside a cheerleading trophy from then on.
Tough choice since both villains suck but I'll go with Catherine Madison.

Round 1: Match 16(FINAL MATCH FOR ROUND 1)
Dracula
Season(s) as villain: Season 5
Episode of death: Not dead(He's invincible)
Info: Dracula is pretty self explanatory. He went to Sunnydale, bit Buffy, put her under a spell along with Xander and tried to kill her. Buffy staked him though, over and over since he kept disappearing and reappearing. He eventually gave up and left.
Anyanka
Season(s) as villain: Season 3
Episode of death: The Wish(for her demon side until after Xander left her at the altar)and Chosen
Info: Anya was a vengeance demon, the patron saint for scorned women. She went to Sunnydal and got Cordelia to make a wish which caused havoc. Giles destroyed her power source though making her human. She ended up with Xander when she became human until he left her at the altar when they were going to get married. She turned back into a vengeance demon after that. She was eventually split in half.

Yeah but it wasn't even very good at that. It wasn't as good at the mind games as angelus and it certainly wasn't as good as hannibal lector.
