View Full Version : Superior Comic Sequel: BATMAN RETURNS or SUPERMAN II?

Although I loved Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman (she was my Best Actress choice of 1992), and the chemistry between Michelle and Michael Keaton (the one and only Bruce Wayne in my book)...BATMAN RETURNS is only half of a really great comic book adaptation. The Penguin's shenanigans were dark, dreary, and the character wholly unsympathetic. Christopher Walken was fun as Max Schreck...the film should have centered around his character and the Catwoman/Batman relationship.

So that leaves me with SUPERMAN II, a sequel that surpasses even the original...how can any movie with Terence Stamp as the lead villain NOT be interesting?

So I'm going with Clark over Bruce on this one.

I'm not sure which one, but I guess Batman Returns, despite being very depressing. Although the best comic book sequel in my book goes to X2

I like Batman Returns (8/10) more than the original Batman (7/10) and also more than Superman II (6/10). So it gets my vote. However, I think the best superhero sequel is X2 (8/10).

Superman II is the better of the 2 films, basically because Batman Returns had more plot holes(how the hell did Penguin get his flippers on the plans for the Batmobile[& don't say the Internet because not many knew what the Internet was in 1992]?).

Although the Batman/Catwoman scenes were first-rate, Danny DeVito(as much as I admire him) took the wrong direction with the Penguin. He made him too Joker-like(the best Penguin is still the late, great Burgess Meredith). Indeed, all the subsequent Batman movie villains(save Pfieffer's Catwoman) has fallen into the 'Jack-trap,' in other words, made their characters too much like Nicholson's Joker(cracking jokes constantly & the like). It may not even be the actors' fault. After all, I don't blame them for wanting to imitate the best. But, read the comics &/or see the wonderful recent Batman animated series & you'll see how wonderfully different from the Joker the Penguin, the Riddler, & Two-Face are.

BATMAN RETURNS (9/10), it was my very first favorite movie, and it's better than the original Batman. Dark, depressing, atmospheric with great villains (Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman completely stole the show) and a great setting. My all time favorite comic book superhero movie.

SUPERMAN II. Of the two, it's the better film, and it may very well be the best superhero film I've ever seen. Great performances, great direction, and great fun all around.

Superman II for me.

I actually like Batman Forever more than Batman Returns.

Superman II by a huge fucking margin. Returns is the best of the Batman movies, but it's still only a 7 or 7.5/10 at best. Superman II is a classic, great story, great performances, almost as good as the original. An excellent and incredibly entertaining flick all around, 9/10.

Both are superior to their originals, but Batman Returns is MUCH better! Better atmosphere, better direction, MUCH better acting, and, overall, just a more fullfilling experience.
