THe Wall by Pink Floyd is on sale at a cd store and i am curious about this band cause i heard a lot about them. all of floyd's other cds are really expensive. should i make my first pink floyd album The Wall? or should i stop being a cheapo and purchase another cd by them?

If it's cheap buy it, it's a great concept album but it might throw you off if it's the first you've heard. I would say that Darkside of the Moon is the best candidate to introduce you to the band...or Wish You Were Here. Afterwards go with The Wall and Animals. If you like all that, try Piper at the Gates of Dawn. If you're really ambitious, you can attempt Ummagumma, Final Cut and Atom Heart Mother...but they aren't as good.

Finally, a thread here about a REAL band, not this week's angst-ridden punk shite. Pink Floyd is great, and The Wall is worth the money you'll spend. GREAT concept album.

OK, I'll give you a rundown:
The Wall is a really good intoduction album to the world of Pink Floyd, but the price is pretty high. There will be songs that you've heard before, and many you probably haven't heard. The more you listen to it, the better it gets. Like ALL their albums.
If you like this one, then of course the next will be Dark Side of the Moon, and although I think it's awesome, it's not their best.
Animals is a great album based loosely off of Animal Farm. It has a lot of slow jams and it takes its' time, but it's great. Definetely need to understand Floyd's flavor to like this one.
Wish You Were Here is also very good. Everyone loves the title song, and that song is nothing else like the other songs on the album, but I love it. Shine on You Crazy Diamond is beautiful.
I think The Final Cut is an awesome album, too. The last one with Roger Waters in the band. It's more lyric-driven than musical with occasional spurts of explosive music.
After that they rejoined without Waters a few years later, making many 'wetter' sounding albums because Gilmour and company likes it better that way. I don't think they're ever as good as they were from Atom Heart Mother to The Final Cut IMHO.
If you really wanna get ambitious, move on to Meddle (another personal fave), and if you STILL like them head onto the older stuff which is a big change from the more common Floyd albums.
I find that the more you listen to Floyd the better it gets.
Hope this helps.

One of my younger brothers, as well as my best friend, are hardcore Pink Floyd fans. I mean like HARDCORE MILITANT fans. My dad's band also do a sterling cover of 'Comfortably Numb'...but I think they(Pink Floyd) are third-rate shite. I liked the earlier stuff - with Syd - in a 'well, I can't be arsed changing the CD player so this will have to do' type way; but frankly, Mr. Shankly, they have never impressed me half as much as they impress themselves. Too pompous, too serious, too much...
P.S. The Wall is a cracking movie, though. :)

My thoughts exactly!
Damn though, I was too late. I knew as soon as I saw a Pink Floyd thread BadCoverVersion was going to be in here knockin' them down again. I was going to ask that you stay out of this one. Oh well, too late. :D

The Wall is great, but it might not be the best one to start off with. To really get a feel for Floyd, I would suggest starting with Dark Side of the Moon. Then, if you like that, get the Wall. I would also recommend Wish You Were Here and Animals, which are also amazing.
