Well, horror is back, good horror. YIPPE! Recently we've got Final Destination 2, Freddy vs Jason, Cabin Fever, Wrong Turn, House of 1,000 Corpses, Jeepers Creepers 2, and on the way The TCM remake. What do you think started this come back of horror?

Luck :)

And now after all these big money-making hits and great finds let the studio slaughtering begin!! Pointless Remakes, shitty sequels written within a year, plotless see-through copycats...oh, wait. This was supposed to be a positive post wasn't it?

Seriously I dont know (but I do know the studio terminator will crush this dream come true soon enough with its giant metal foot). I am guessing it had to do with last year, not this year, as the movies being released now started filming in 2002 or before. So obviously it's not what was happening NOW, but then...Hm.

Freddy Vs. Jason started it. It opened with a nice 36 million and finished with a sweet 80 million making lots of profit. And it was a good and fun movie too. I agree, horror is coming back and it's kicking are ass too much.

I'm not exactly sure what started the horror resurgence but I'm glad it's happening. We have indeed had a lot of great horror movies that have come out recently and more to come. I'm all for it. Let the slicing, dicing, slashing and hacking continue!

What? It didn't GO anywhere..

there were GREAT horror movies made when hollywood couldn't have been bothered. The fact that they're showing interest again is a splendiferous thing(maybe), but its not as if they're doing anything too monumental. .

I think we have been getting great horror movies every year but I MUST agree 2003 has kicked MY ass! The forementioned movies are some of the reasons why I think 2003 has been one of the best years for horror.

Overall not a great year for movies in general, but one of the best in many years for horror. I mean, when was the last time you saw a movie as good as Cabin Fever in theaters, not in my lifetime.

No doubt that this is one of the better years for horror fans in recent memory. I hope the trend keeps going and the genre doesn't start getting watered down with weak attempts to ride on the coattails of what's successful.

I wouldn't go saying horror is back and kicking ass without knocking on wood in the process. Just a thought. I'll breathe a sign of relief when Freddy vs. Jason gets an Oscar for Best Pic.

This year has been so cool. Its about time horror made a comeback. Has anyone seen Bubba Ho-Tep? Also, I hope people go back and give Wrong Turn a second look. I think the film is gaining a sort of cult status already. It came and went so quick but I recently have been hearing people rave about it. Even Rue Morgue magazine has mentioned that we should really take a second look.

Horror's great comeback mainly lies in Asia, with stuff like Ring, The Eye, Dark Water...

Commercial exploitations like Freddy vs Jason and The TCM remake (shiver) are not what I consider quality horror. Just some take-the-money-and-run flicks for the mainstream audience, not for the real horror fans who dig some raw power and good scares.

Granted, FVJ wasn't particularly "scary," but we know where the genuine thrills are when we want them. There's nothing wrong with indulging in commercialized slasher fluff every once in awhile. Not every film can trumpet creepy little girls and subtitles.

should we consider ourselfes lucky with the attention given to the genre by the "money-makers"?????
I think it all started with the blair witch project. The big studios realized that they could make a nice profit with horror movies,
time will tell if the 2002/2003 movies will be classics ( don't think many will be)

I think they will be. Shit made nowadays its totally different from last decade, and the last decade was diff. than the 70s, and so on and so on.

You must keep one thing in mind... that you nor I have a clue as to what the next decade brings us. If you think this year's flicks was a letdown just wait until 2013 rolls around. Could it be so much CGI that it almost replaces films entirely? Could nearabout ALL of the acting turn to complete shite? Or could the next decade roll out horror films to all but embarass what we have now? As you said, time will tell.

But one thing is for sure.... I garantee you that the whole feeling, the "vibe" that is present in today's horror will be FOREVER lost in a few years time. Just like the 80's. What makes now any different? Knowing that...yes I do believe alot of us will turn to 03' horror and be rather proud to have lived through it.

I like the enthusisam but it's not a comeback because horror was bieng made in the same volume since SCREAM helped it's sorry hide to to get off the floor.

IMO it's not kicking ass just pinching it I want to JC2 I hope it's good but I was so dissapointed with UNDERWORLD to be honest there are better things in the pipline than TCM remake and Cabin Fever.

True, but watching todays slashers is not half us fun as watching the great ones from the 80's like Sleepaway Camp 2 and Friday the 13th 5 (yes, it is my favorite after the original).

Some of the recent horror movies have been decent but not too much special. I kinda wish horror would go back to the good old 80's.

Its been a great year for horror! I agree that in the future well look back and say that the new millenium has been good to us in terms of horror! Kinda the way we look at the 80s today!

Reasons to be happy:

Freddy Vs. Jason -a horror event if their ever was one! This thing was huuuge! Loved every minute of it.

Cabin Fever -a return to gritty bloody horror

28 days Later -finally a really scary movie!

Jeepers Creepers II

House of a Thousand Corpses -even with its flaws I enjoyed it!

Wrong Turn -trying to bring back that 70s vibe, suceeded moderately

Underworld -havent seen it yet but it looks amazing

May

Beyond Re-animator -Herbert West is back!

Most of the horror films being released in theaters are making preatty decent money, hopefully this wont mean will be seeing bad sequels and rip offs. Or xerox copies of these succesfull films.

So far so good. Dont screw up Hollyweird! Were counting on you!

I have not seen Wrong turn but i was disapointed by House of 1000 corpses. But Freddy Vs Jason, Cabin Fever and Jeepers Creepers 2 kicked ass!!! Good year for movies! Horror and all!

That's just nostalgia kicking in. It has very little to do with the quality of the films themselves. For every SC2, there's a The Mutilator. The ‘80s were no better than any other decade.

Count Chocula brought up an important point. You have to be careful not to let nostalgia cloud an honest opinion on a film. I remember the 80's just fine and I can tell you this,There were a mess of bad horror films out there. And guess what? People were saying"movies suck compared to the good old days of the late 60's-70's." Every generation tends to site the decade(or decades) before as the good ol days. The truth seems to really be that every decade has its share of good and bad. This will never change. Things dont get too much better or worse......just different.

If you've noticed, every horror flick that has had good promtion has turned a profit (Wrong Turn doesn't count since its promotion sucked).

I'm amped about Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But, I'll wet my appetite on Hosue of The Dead for now. YES, I do want to see it. :)

A legendary letdown. All the waiting for a weak pile of non-fun. Where's the creative kills, the great one liners, the tits??

Cabin Fever -a return to gritty bloody horror

I have to agree on this one; now this is a fun flick.

28 days Later -finally a really scary movie!

Totally agree.

Jeepers Creepers II

Terrible. Of course it was nice to see those stupid racist annoying teens get it, but still... not enough scares, not enough fun

House of a Thousand Corpses -even with its flaws I enjoyed it!

Nice movie, fun cult music. If only MPAA hadn't butchered some of it.

Wrong Turn -trying to bring back that 70s vibe, suceeded moderately

Trying to bring back that 70s vide, failed miserably. Even its poor quality isn't the same as we had in the seventees. Looks, smells, feels, tastes and sounds like shit. It's still today's mainstream Hollywood with a very small amount of seventees.

May

Now this is a great movie. One of the best of the year, not just in horror.

Nothing groundbreaking is right. and most certainly not a comeback of horror. OMG i dunno what your comparing these 2 but surely not the shit that I can remember.

I got a question for you...

Now if this were to be year 2020 and I were to ask you what horror film from early 00's that was 100% original groundbreaking, what are you gonna name me like 1 or 2? Gimme some answers here I want to TALK ABOUT 2003 as a comeback, not as a year of PURE LUCK AND MONEY.

Now here's someone I can talk to...

I just shiver when I think of people in the year 2030 saying 'Thirty years ago, they made these great classics like Jeepers Creepers and Final Destination... They don't make 'em like that anymore... But this new Micheal vs Chucky flick starring Haley Joel Osment as Dr. Loomis really is horror's great comeback!'

Horror never really had a comeback, it has always been here. It's funny, people say its a comeback only when Hollywood opens its arms and makes some flicks for us to spend our hard earned cash to see.
So far this year most of the great flicks were small films, May was awsome, 28 Days Later a cool british film which reminded me of Romero's Crazies. Japan, with Versus, The Ring, Miike flicks, and many many more.

Of course most of the flicks out in the theaters have been a mix bag. Jeepers Creepers 2, I passed on. Cabin Fever, I thought sucked ass. Freddy VS Jason, although fun to watch, ultimatly a time waster. The Wrong Turn, well that one I liked. Final Destination 2, saw the first, don't care to see this. Hopefuly better films will come out soon.

What this year I have liked though, is all the kick ass flicks coming out on DVD. I Drink Your Blood, MGM and their releases, Hills Have Eyes, Irreversible, and coming soon Monster Squad. And more and more, cheaply shot indie flicks by the fans. The cheaper film-making equipment becomes, more and more fans are making their own flicks and that is what I have been loving about horror this day and age.

My rant is done, my opinions are over, have a goodnight and

cheers
